Hyundai sells its 10,000,000th Elantra

Thu, 30 Oct 2014

There aren't many nameplates that have sold over 10 million units in the history of the automotive industry. In fact there have only been ten, and now Hyundai has joined the list for the first time with the Elantra.
Launched 24 years ago, the Elantra has far and away been Hyundai's top selling model. Now in its fifth generation, the Elantra is sold as a coupe, sedan and wagon, and under the Avante name in its home market. It's one of the top selling cars in the world, and Hyundai has earned the right to crow that it has sold its 10,000,000 of them globally. That means that, on average, Hyundai has sold more than 45 new Elantras every hour of every day of every year since its introduction in 1990.
Other models in the 10 Million Club include the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, VW Beetle and Golf, and the Ford Model T and F-Series. The latter might still be considered the most impressive, selling over 34 million units - the vast majority in the US - to be America's top-selling vehicle for over 30 years running.

Hyundai needs to make the Ioniq Scooter

Thu, Jan 19 2017

In the mad rush that is an auto show press conference, sometimes the coolest stuff is sometimes barely mentioned, and often overshadowed, by the bigger news. Hyundai's awesome Ioniq Scooter concept is a perfect example of this. Revealed at this year's CES, it was given just 45 seconds of talk time in a 45 minute conference. The scooter's sleek design and clever charging spot struck me as the one of the most practical and fleshed out mobility solutions on display at the show. Now I'm on a one-man mission to convince Hyundai to build it. The Ioniq Scooter is a compact, collapsible, and lightweight electric scooter that (and this is my favorite part) stows and charges in the door pocket of the upcoming Hyundai Ioniq. You can park your car, pop out the scooter and ride what's referred to in the mobility industry as the "last mile." Driving is usually the easiest part of any journey. Roads are all connected and relatively easy to navigate. Everything after that - parking, walking, etc. - often takes just as much time and effort as driving. The scooter helps solve this problem. View 6 Photos For me, the little electric scooter was the best thing in Hyundai's sci-fi filled booth. The automaker brought out two working robot exoskeletons and a car concept that is literally meant to be built into your home. There was an autonomous Ioniq giving test rides down the Las Vegas strip. Despite all of that, all I wanted to do was break the glass case holding the scooter silently ride away. In person, the Ioniq scooter appears relatively lightweight and extremely compact. It's partially constructed from carbon fiber and has a small display that shows battery life, speed, and range. You use a small knob on the handle bar to accelerate and brake. Alternatively, you can slow down by pushing a pad over the rear wheel, just like on a kick scooter. Top speed is 12 mph and the total range is about 12 miles. It's unclear if the battery can be swapped out to extend the distance before recharging. The Ioniq scoter is just a prototype, so we have no idea how much it would cost to put it into production or if Hyundai has any plans to even do so. What we do know is that a working prototype exists and that we would love to get a chance to ride it. Like our endeavor to drive a Citroen C4 Cactus, I'm on a mission to ride the Ioniq scooter. In my eyes, this scooter is the modern equivalent to a Honda Motocompo, but more practical.

Hyundai working on some sort of secret, single-seat EV

Thu, Mar 3 2016

Hyundai's big electric push at the Geneva Motor Show this week was its three-pronged Ioniq line-up. But there will apparently be at least two other electric vehicles coming from the South Korean automaker in the near future, according to Reuters. These vehicles are a single-seat EV and an electric scooter. Neither of these EVs were mentioned in Hyundai's press releases. Neither of these EVs were mentioned in Hyundai's official press releases from Geneva, so details are sparse, but Reuters says that these non-standard vehicles slot nicely into Hyundai's future mobility plans. The Korea Herald says that the automaker is going to invest more in future projects that don't necessarily involve new cars. The idea is to increase the "mobility freedom" for people, according to a presentation from Hyundai Motor Group vice chairman Chung Eui-sun during Geneva. Hyundai would not confirm the news of the scooter or the single-seat EV to Reuters and requests for more information from AutoblogGreen were also ignored. When we learn anything official, we will let you know. Given the lack of details, we'll make some educated guesses. Electric scooters are extremely popular in Asia, and we don't think this will stray too far from the two-wheels-and-a-battery model that already works well. As for the one-seat EV, we have to think that Hyundai will take a page from the Renault Twizy or Toyota i-Road, both sleek little electric runabouts that are quirky, sure, but also perfect for running errands in an urban environments. We expect some sort of carsharing program, as well. The official Ioniq vehicles were three powertrains in one body style: a hybrid, PHEV, and pure EV. You can get all the details that we know about these vehicles so far here.
