Hyundai and Gurnade build a mildly wild Veloster Turbo
Thu, Oct 13 2016Update: We received some work-in-progress photos from Gurnade, Inc. of the Veloster Turbo, which can be seen in the gallery above. Hyundai revealed the third custom machine that will grace its display at the SEMA Show this year. It's a Veloster Turbo that Hyundai describes as "race-ready," and was built in collaboration with Gurnade, Inc., a design company that does graphic and website design and automotive renders. As far as making it race-ready, Hyundai and Gurnade gave this Veloster a new intercooler, downpipe, cold-air intake and ECU tune courtesy of 845 Motorsports. It also received a new catback exhaust and blow-off valve. The chassis has been reinforced with a variety of braces from Pierce Motorsports, and NEO Motorsports contributed the coilover suspension and bigger brakes with six-piston calipers. SEMA cars need show as well as go, so the companies added 19-inch Rotiform wheels, massive fender flares, a custom grille, a carbon-fiber hood and hatch and, of course, spoilers. All of which are covered in a PPG paint called "Magic Magenta." Inside, the Veloster Turbo features racing seats and a roll cage. The interior also received some less-than-race-ready modifications including an upgraded audio system complete with subwoofer and amplifier. While this is by no means an unimpressive car, this Veloster Turbo will unfortunately have to share the stage with some truly wild creations. These include a beefed-up, off-road Santa Fe, and the absolutely insane 1,040-horsepower, rear-wheel-drive Santa Fe built by Bisimoto. However, the Veloster Turbo gives a more realistic look at what people can create with a new Hyundai, thanks to its off-the-shelf parts. Hyundai reveals a fourth, autonomous flavor of Ioniq
Thu, Nov 17 2016Hyundai added a fourth variant of the Ioniq line at this year's Los Angeles auto show, but this one isn't headed for production just yet. It's an autonomous concept that Hyundai is using to develop affordable, integrated hardware and software. Integrating all the hardware is something Hyundai is quite proud of, particularly the positioning of the lidar system in the front bumper. Hyundai says moving the lidar gear to the bumper allows the Ioniq "to look like any other car on the road and not a high school science project." We wonder if that statement was directed to Ford and its autonomous Fusion prototypes. The three lidar sensors are combined with a variety of other systems aboard the autonomous Ioniq. A number of the sensors are already going to be installed on production Ioniqs, including the radar for the car's Smart Cruise Control and the lane-keep assist cameras. The car's blind-spot radar will also be used for lane changes. Hyundai says by using these existing parts, implementing autonomous technology should be simpler and cheaper. These standard Ioniq sensors are all supplemented with a GPS antenna, high-definition mapping data, and a three-camera system installed just behind the windshield for detecting pedestrians, lane markings, and traffic signals. The car isn't just for show either. Hyundai has three of the autonomous Ioniqs testing in South Korea, alongside a pair of autonomous hydrogen fuel cell Tucsons. The company will also bring two autonomous Ioniqs to the 2017 Consumer Electronic Show. The cars will be there to give rides to the media. Hybrid, Plug-in Hybrid and EV Buyer's Guide: Which one do you want?
Fri, Nov 10 2017If you're shopping for a new vehicle these days, there's a litany of acronyms, buzzwords, and technobabble to further complicate an already difficult decision. But if you're looking at a green powertrain, you have three basic choices to compare: hybrid, plug-in hybrid and "EV" or, electric vehicle. So what are they and which one — if any — is right for you? Research your next new vehicle using Autoblog's Car Finder. Gasoline-Electric Hybrids By now, most people are familiar with the concept of a hybrid car. Thank Toyota's Prius for that. At its most basic, a hybrid vehicle has two powertrains, one gasoline and one electric, which work together for maximum efficiency. At low speeds, the engine can shut off entirely, relying solely on the battery for propulsion. The battery is either charged as you drive by converting kinetic energy into potential energy via a complex regenerative braking system, or directly off of the gas motor. This is a very hands-off, behind-the-scenes system as all the driver has to is put in gas and drive as normal. Hybrids come in all shapes and sizes and, according to the EPA, range in fuel economy from 58 mpg for the Hyundai Ioniq Blue all the way down to 13 mpg for the Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta. Best For: Anyone who want to see their fuel consumption go down without many sacrifices. You can easily find a hybrid sedan, hatchback, crossover, SUV or even a pickup truck (i f you can find one). Best of all, a hybrid requires no special equipment to be installed at home, or added work for the driver. Hybrids do cost more than traditionally-powered competitors, so make sure to compare projected fuel savings with how much extra a hybrid will cost – it may take a surprisingly long time to break even. Our Favorite Hybrids: 2017 Toyota Prius 2018 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid 2017 Ford Fusion Hybrid Plug-In Hybrids Sometimes referred to as a PHEV, or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, this is a baby-step towards full electrification. Armed with a much larger battery pack than a hybrid, PHEVs can go between 12 ( Mercedes-Benz GLE550e) and 97 ( BMW i3 w/Range Extender) miles on electricity alone depending on the model and your driving style. Like a normal hybrid, the driver is largely unaware of which power source is currently in use, even as they switch over — either because the battery is drained, or the driving circumstances require more power.
