Hyundai Group and LG Chem launch EV & Battery Challenge
Sat, Jun 27 2020The chairmen of Hyundai Motor Group and LG Chem sat down recently to explore ideas for collaboration that include a joint venture in Indonesia to produce electric vehicle batteries. One early result of their efforts is the EV & Battery Challenge, a global competition seeking startups with working technologies that will add value to battery development and production, and enhance customer's total EV ownership experience. Broken into two categories of innovation, the contest is looking for battery tech in the areas of management and maintenance, materials, reuse and recycling, and manufacturing and quality control. For electric vehicles, startups with innovations in the EV business model, charging, components, fleet management, and customer service are encouraged to apply. LG held a similar event last year open to new inventions specifically for batteries. Nearly 130 applicants applied from 27 countries. After a Battery Challenge Pitch Day at the LG Magok Science Park in South Korea, the company chose five finalists who received up to $2 million in funding through formal partnership with the conglomerate. LG said it didn't walk away from the 124 candidates not chosen, "continuing to work closely [with them] and offer support in terms of technological evaluation and future investment."  The EV & Battery Challenge dangles the same prizes — financial support and the chance to work in Hyundai and LG facilities with their tools, engineers, and knowledge. Applicants need to have a non-commercialized working prototype clearly different from what's currently on the market, "strong expertise in the battery and mobility sector," and "a business model based on credible commercial and economic assumptions." The challenge is open from now until August 28. Hyundai and LG will review applications in September, then hold video interviews with a winnowed group in October and November. In November, finalists will be invited to a two-day workshop at Hyundai's CRADLE hub in Silicon Valley, where the automaker bases its innovation initiatives in the U.S. New Energy Nexus, "an international non-profit that supports clean energy entrepreneurs with funds, accelerators, and networks," is overseeing the EV & Battery Challenge. The potential reward for LG is finding a mythical piece of battery tech to counter the million-mile packs supposedly on the verge of release from China's CATL or U.S.
Redesigned 2019 Hyundai Tucson gets modest price bump
Fri, Oct 26 2018Hyundai says its refreshed 2019 Tucson is now hitting showrooms with a starting price of $24,245, including destination charge. That's a $700 bump up from the outgoing model, though Hyundai is currently offering a $2,500 discount on the 2018 model when purchased through Oct. 31, according to its retail website. For 2019, Hyundai gave the midsize Tucson crossover updates inside and out. There are redesigned front and rear fascias, including Hyundai's latest cascading grille, redesigned 17-, 18- and 19-inch wheels, and more advanced safety technology. All trim levels get Hyundai's SmartSense package, which includes forward collision-avoidance assist, lane-keeping assist and driver attention warning. Electronic parking brake with auto vehicle hold and a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration are standard across all trim levels as well. View 14 Photos The optional 1.6-liter turbo-four engine is gone, replaced by a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter that makes 181 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque for the higher SEL, Sport and Limited trims. The base SE and Value trim models get a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 164 hp and 151 lb-ft. Both are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Inside, there are new designs for the center stack, cluster, panel vent and leather seats. The range tops out at $32,595 for the Limited with the Unlimited package in front-wheel-drive, or $33,995 for all-wheel-drive. The package adds features including pedestrian detection safety technology, high-beam assist, panoramic sunroof, ventilated front and heated rear seats and smart cruise control with stop and go. Hyundai Sante Fe gets zombie survival machine treatment for NY Comic-Con
Sat, 05 Oct 2013Surviving a zombie invasion isn't easy, and Hyundai takes life-or-undead situations pretty seriously, as made clear by its devotion to creating zombie-annihilating vehicles. Earlier this year, Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead comic series that gave birth to the hit television series of the same name, designed a Zombie Survival Machine around a Hyundai Veloster hatchback.
This year, TWD fan Anson Kuo has conjured up a Santa Fe sports utility vehicle capable of mowing down hoards of zombies with extra room for passengers and supplies. Hyundai says Kuo's design was built by Galpin Auto Sports and will be unveiled at New York Comic-Con on October 10.
"We love Anson Kuo's take on this Santa Fe Zombie Survival Machine - it's creative... and deadly," says Steve Shannon, vice president of marketing for Hyundai Motor America.
