NHTSA investigating 8 million airbags not made by Takata
Thu, Aug 4 2016In a shocking turn of events, we have a line of airbags under investigation that weren't made by Takata. Rather, Automotive News reports that 8,000,000 airbags made by ARC Automotive Inc. are under investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). According to Automotive News, NHTSA is looking into ARC's airbags after two injuries and a recent death were attributed to the company's products. The two injuries occurred first and prompted the initial inquiry of 490,000 airbags, which then expanded after an airbag from a different line caused the death of a Canadian driver. The airbags in question are found in GM, FCA, Hyundai and Kia products, and all automakers are cooperating with the investigation, Automotive News reports. It is also important to note that these airbags have not been recalled, as NHTSA is trying to determine the issue and whether a recall is necessary. NHTSA also told the news outlet that the ARC inflators use a different design than those from Takata, instead using some pressurized gas and an ammonium nitrate charge. While the design may be different, the Takata inflators also used ammonium nitrate propellant, which other manufacturers have avoided. We will be watching this situation closely to see what develops. Here's hoping – for our collective safety and sanity – that we won't have to go through another airbag crisis like with the Takata recall. 2018 Hyundai Tucson Sport introduced with new engine
Wed, Mar 21 2018The 2018 Hyundai Tucson Sport its getting its own exclusive engine to help separate it from the rest of the Tucson lineup. It will also get some bragging rights over rivals like the Toyota RAV4. Now, don't get too excited and imagine yourself racing Mustangs and Camaros in your Hyundai-badged compact SUV. The Tucson Sport comes exclusively with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that delivers 181-horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. This does make the Tucson Sport the most powerful variant in the Tucson range - though the differences are pretty modest. The standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder offers 164 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque, while the optional 1.6-liter turbocharged four serves up 175 hp and 195 lb-ft. Coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission with a SHIFTRONIC manual mode, buyers have a choice of front- or all-wheel-drive. Standard features on the Sport include 19-inch alloy wheels, blind spot warning, proximity key with push-button start, a leather wrapped steering wheel and shift-knob, and dual-zone automatic temperature control. The 2018 Tucson Sport in front-wheel-drive format starts at $25,150, while the Sport equipped with AWD has a starting MSRP of $26,550. This puts the Sport model right in the middle of the Tucson range, which stretches from the base SE model at $22,550, upward to $30,825 for the Limited trim fitted with the turbo four-cylinder and AWD. John Krafcik eyes Sonata, talks about his new role
Thu, 17 Apr 2014As hundreds of people gathered to watch the unveiling of the 2015 Hyundai Sonata at the New York Auto Show on Wednesday, John Krafcik, a driving force behind the new vehicle, found himself in a peculiar position.
He stood far away from the car, away from the crowd. He watched from the Nissan stand as the covers were pulled off the Sonata.
If it was an awkward moment for Krafcik, whose tenure as Hyundai's chief executive officer ended on January 1, he didn't show it. He offered effusive praise of the Sonata. "It's a beautiful car," he said. "I think it's wonderful."
