Watch a motorcycle racer nearly rub the wall at Macau's track
Sun, Apr 10 2016Motorcycle racer John McGuinness is no stranger to dangerous racetracks, having scored multiple victories in the frequently deadly Isle of Man TT. In this video, he trades the Snaefell Mountain Course's winding roads for the incredibly tight confines of the Macau Grand Prix circuit. The track is like China's version of the Circuit de Monaco, and it looks barely wide enough for two bikes to fit at some points in this clip. The claustrophobic layout makes the street track famously difficult for racing and occasionally deadly. McGuinness gives viewers a great tour of the track on his Honda Fireblade, and he frequently has his shoulders nearly grazing against the wall. You really get a sense of just how narrow the course gets. The ride looks both terrifying and very fun. If you want to see more of McGuinness' skill, here's a clip of him riding at Le Mans at night. We look forward to watching him at the Isle of Man again this year, too. McGuinness not only set a new electric bike lap record there in 2015 but also won the SES TT Zero Challenge. Honda S660 proving popular with middle-age Japanese buyers
Tue, Aug 11 2015The S660 roadster has been a success so far for Honda. (At least, that is, insofar as a niche-market sports car limited to the Japanese Domestic Market can be considered a big seller.) It just hasn't resonated with the customers that the company expected. Honda revealed the S660 in concept form at the Tokyo Motor Show nearly two years ago, and subsequently put it into production. The convertible Kei car pays homage to models like the S500, S2000, and Beat. It packs a tiny 660cc three-cylinder engine mounted amidships and driving the rear wheels. Despite its connection to past models, the S660 features an entirely modern design that, along with its low price, was expected to appeal to younger buyers. But while Honda has already sold out all 8,600 examples it's slated to build this year, a surprising 80 percent of them have been snapped up by customers over the age of 40 who are mostly buying them as second cars. The development is not entirely isolated. As Bloomberg points out, the number of licensed drivers in Japan "under the age of 40 has fallen 46 percent over the last 13 years." Those are rather startling numbers that dwindle the market down for youth-oriented vehicles like the S660. Honda is expected to begin taking orders for next year's allocation of S660s in October. At that point, the company anticipates the average age of its customer base will drop. But with fewer young drivers on the road in Japan, it shouldn't expect it to drop by much.
2017 Honda Civic Type R mule sports sweet exhaust
Fri, Sep 4 2015The 2016 Honda Civic might be one the most-spied cars in recent memory, but the wait to actually see the new model is just a few days away on Sept. 16. That big reveal is only for the sedan, but these fresh shots show a sporty variant of the five-door that our spies speculate could preview bits of the next-gen Civic Type R. These photos seem to show the same variant recently spotted in Spain, but there are some notable differences and better angles here. Up front, the styling still shows the same Acura-like design as the patent drawings, but these images make it much easier to spot the narrow mesh in the grilles of the lower air dam. The major change along the side is the new set of big, black wheels with low-profile tires, and this setup fits the style much better than the earlier car. Plus, you can easily spot larger front brake discs and a Brembo logo on the caliper this time. Thankfully, these photos provide a much better look at the earlier example's weird, center-mounted exhaust layout, too. It appears that the larger pipes on the outside each have their own muffler, but there doesn't appear to be one for the smaller outlet in the middle. There's still the possibility this could be a way of testing the single-exit design from the 2016 Civic concept. We know the next-gen Civic will be offered as a sedan, coupe, and five-door. Plus, Si and Type R trims will eventually join the lineup. At the current rate of spy shots, we'll see them all well before their respective reveals. Related Video:
