Honda previews S660 roadster ahead of Tokyo debut

Wed, 23 Oct 2013

Honda isn't known for making convertibles. In fact, legend has it that old man Soichiro banned them from his lineup - but then he also didn't approve of six-cylinder engines, either. There have been exceptions, like the Civic del Sol and S2000, and today Honda has revealed another.
Set to debut at the forthcoming Tokyo Motor Show in late November is the Honda S660 concept, a compact little roadster about which Honda is saying even less. It looks about the size of a Kei car, with a nameplate that suggests a 660cc engine, making it more of a revival for the 1990's Beat than the high-end S2000. And while there are some clear similarities with the EV-STER concept that debuted two years ago in Tokyo, the S660 looks closer to production-ready, with key features like an actual steering wheel.
Of course, whether the S660 makes production, and beyond that makes it off of the Japanese islands and across the Pacific to US showrooms, is another matter, but we could see something like this taking the fight to the Mazda MX-5 and even the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ if it did.

Honda: Somebody To Love (Ridgeline)

Mon, Feb 8 2016

If you want to search for symbolism in this Honda Ridgeline ad that aired during Super Bowl 50, there's plenty to be had. It looks like a simple, funny demonstration of the compact truck's cargo bed audio system. Sheep, hearing the speakers from the back of bed, pick up the earworm of Queen's Somebody to Love and start singing on their own. But the sheep imagery could also be seen as an indictment of the me-too half-ton truck crowd. The Ridgeline, returning for the second generation after a brief hiatus, is sort of an anti-truck with unibody construction, a dual-hinged tailgate, and a trunk inside the bed. Normal pickup folk see the Ridgeline as not enough truck. Honda fans see those types as sheeple. Or maybe it's just a fun ad with a catchy song and some talking animals. Turbo Honda S2000 could battle Miata and 124 Abarth

Mon, Dec 7 2015

Rumors are again swirling that Honda could have a new sports car under development to slot below the forthcoming NSX. Autocar claims the model would revive the S2000 name, but offer 1.5- and 2.0-liter turbocharged units at the front to drive the rear wheels. Autocar alleges this info comes from unnamed "company insiders," and asserts the new S2000 could have a base model with a 1.5-liter turbo that makes about 180 hp – almost 60 hp down from the original convertible. However, a hotter version – possibly with Type R badging – would reportedly have a detuned form of the 306-hp 2.0-liter in the Civic Type R. Both trims would have a six-speed manual. Competing rumors contend that Honda could be developing two different performance models. Patent images suggest the company might have a smaller version of the NSX under consideration in addition to the rumored S200 revival. The mid-engine coupe would allegedly use a hybrid powertrain based on the Civic Type R's engine to make a total of about 400 hp. However, Autocar claims the S2000 successor has the higher priority of the pair, but it doesn't mention where the info comes from. The Honda S660 kei car on sale in Japan shows that the brand is willing to dabble in new sports cars, but that convertible isn't practical for the US market, according to the automaker's bosses. Dealers meanwhile continue to beg a performance model in the lineup, so it's possible one of these rumored projects eventually could arrive in showrooms. Related Video:
