Honda reveals three new turbo VTEC engines, including Civic Type R 2.0L
Tue, 19 Nov 2013It's fair to say that in recent years, Honda has been viewed as a laggard when it comes to engine and gearbox development, seemingly missing the boat on direct-injection, forced-induction and high gear-count transmissions, among other things. But under its Earth Dreams banner, the Japanese automaker is showing new vigor, with the latest proof being this trio of just-announced powerplants.
Measuring 1.0-liters, 1.5-liters and 2.0-liters in displacement, this array of three- and four-cylinder engines boasts turbocharging and direct-injection along with the latest iteration of Honda's famed VTEC variable valve timing hardware. "Most suitable for small-to-medium-sized vehicles," the largest engine is said to be good for more than 276 horsepower and will slot into the eagerly awaited Civic Type R, iconic red valve cover and all.
Unfortunately, few other details about the hot Civic's engine or any of the others are being made public at this time, and there's no official word about the engines coming to North American in the Type R or any other model. Given that all the engines are complaint with stringent Euro 6 emissions standards, they figure to be clean enough, and Honda says that these have been developed as global powerplants, so we'd be shocked if they didn't come ashore in new or updated products over the next few years... even if they leave the CTR on the boat.
NHTSA urges owners of recalled Takata airbag vehicles to take immediate action
Mon, 20 Oct 2014The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Department of Transportation are taking the unusual step of issuing a followup press release urging owners of certain recalled vehicles "to act immediately" to fix their cars and trucks. The problem in question concerns the repair campaigns for rupturing Takata airbag inflators issued in June and covers a long list of models from Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Acura, Mazda, BMW, Nissan, Infiniti, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Oldsmobile and Pontiac.
While NHSTA doesn't specifically say why the recall is vital in the new release, Toyota's own explanation in its newly announced renotification campaign earlier today sheds some new light on the topic. According to the Japanese automaker, in testing, Takata found a possible link between the rupturing airbag inflators and high humidity. NHTSA is advocating that all owners pursue repairs immediately if they haven't already done so already. This is especially crucial for those drivers especially in Florida, Puerto Rico, Guam, Saipan, American Samoa, Virgin Islands and Hawaii because of the humid conditions there.
We don't need to tell you how dangerous an inadvertent airbag deployment could be - even in a stationary vehicle - but adding to the Takata issue is fears that the deployment could lead to shrapnel being sprayed into the cabin.
Don't drive some 2001-03 Hondas and Acuras with Takata airbags, feds say
Thu, Jun 30 2016The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Thursday warned owners of certain 2001-03 Honda and Acura models to stop driving their vehicles immediately due greater risks posed by their defective Takata airbags. NHTSA says the airbag inflators have up to a 50-percent chance of exploding in an accident. Dangerous ruptures are more likely to occur in vehicles that spend a significant amount of time in high humidity. About 313,000 vehicles are affected. They are: The 2001 to 2002 Honda Accord and Civic, the 2002 to 2003 Acura TL, 2002 Honda CR-V and Odyssey, 2003 Acura CL, and 2003 Honda Pilot. All of these vehicles were recalled from 2008 to 2011 for being equipped with Takata inflators, but the feds are urging immediate action due to the elevated risk. The inflators in this group of cars have a manufacturing defect that "greatly increases the potential for dangerous rupture when a crash causes the airbag to deploy," NHTSA said. "The air bag inflators in this particular group of vehicles pose a grave danger to drivers and passengers that must be fixed right away," NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind said in a statement.
