Automotive April Fools' joke roundup [w/videos]
Mon, 01 Apr 2013Happy April, everyone. And we all know what this first day of the month means: April Fools' Day. Today is a national holiday for pranksters with the Internet acting as a serious enabler, and it's always fun to see what kind of vivid imaginations exist out there in the automotive world. The abundance of fake news gets a little old as the day rolls on, but we did manage to get in a few chuckles thanks to a handful of major automakers and automotive news outlets that got into the pranking spirit this year
Some of our favorites this year includes Subaru showing what happens when you combine a bunch of rumors, a Corvette some may have already thought was a joke or Honda providing some in-car innovation circa the late 1980s. Honestly, we're still waiting for official confirmation from Mitsubishi that the recently introduced 2014 Mirage is an elaborate April Fools' joke using a failed design intended for the 1995 Geo Metro. We dug up as much "official" OEM foolishness we could find, as well as some of our other favorites, and posted them all below.
Florida teens flee police, ram deputies with stolen car
Tue, May 3 2016Three Hudson, Florida teens are in juvenile detention today after leading law enforcement on a dangerous high-speed chase in a stolen Honda. According to WFTS, the three unnamed youths were allegedly breaking into cars on the evening of Saturday, April 30 in the Bayonet Point neighborhood in Hudson, FL. Pasco County sheriff's deputies responded to calls about their activities, and when the deputies arrived on the scene, the teens hopped into a stolen Honda and sped off. This prompted a high-speed chase throughout central Pasco County involving both PCS deputies and officers from the Florida Highway Patrol. Bodycam footage released by law enforcement shows officers chasing the reckless teens, ages 13, 14, and 15, throughout the county at speeds approaching 100 miles per hour, where they crashed through barbed wire fences and hopped curbs in an effort to elude pursuit. Eventually, law enforcement cornered the teens on a dead end street, but they refused to give up. In an effort to escape, the driver smashed into four police cruisers before officers finally stopped them. The three alleged car thieves were cuffed and taken into custody on the scene. Luckily, no one was injured during the chase. This is not the youths' first run-in with police. According to the Pasco County Sheriff's office, the three teens, two of whom are brothers, are well-known serial offenders. They are facing a number of charges, including aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, and are currently being held at the Pasco Juvenile Detention center. Honda safety campaign hunting for faulty Takata airbags in junkyards
Tue, May 12 2015Honda has been working for months to recall about 5.5 million vehicles to replace their faulty Takata airbag inflators. With many of these models dating back over a decade, some of them aren't on the road anymore; instead they're sitting in salvage yards across the country as a possible source for inexpensive, recycled parts. There's a serious risk for injuries and fatalities if these bad components end up in cars still on the road, and the automaker is on the hunt to track the dangerous parts down. According to Automotive News, Honda thinks there could be over 24,000 recalled Takata airbags in the company's vehicles in junkyards in the US. The automaker has been working with an outside business to find them and issued notices to salvage lots around the country about an offer to buy the parts back. So far, it has tracked down around 3,900 inflators. Bizarrely, Honda is facing pushback on this safety campaign from the Automotive Recyclers Association. "The buyback program appears to be offering recyclers a price for airbags materially lower than the fair parts value," organization CEO Michael Wilson said to Automotive News. Although, under federal law it's illegal to sell faulty components to people. The trade group also has a pending lawsuit against the automaker for alleged lost value in buying vehicles with Takata inflators. In addition to getting the word out to auto recyclers, Honda had a nationwide advertising campaign for people to get their cars fixed. However, the company and Takata are facing many lawsuits for injuries and deaths related to the faulty inflators.
