Best compact SUVs of 2022

Compact SUVs are now the go-to choice for family transportation. Actually, considering how popular they are, they have clearly moved beyond only family duty. With such popularity, though, comes an awful lot of competitors, and it can be difficult to figure out which one might be the best compact SUV for you.  It's important to note that by "compact SUV" we're talking about a specific segment. As we describe in our more comprehensive "Best small SUVs" list, there are also subcompact SUVs that vary widely in size amongst themselves, but are clearly smaller than the SUVs below. Frankly, today's segment of compact SUVs isn't exactly compact — some have more cargo space than vehicles that are considered midsize based on their exterior dimensions. They've all grown considerably over the years. While many lists out there just rattle off every vehicle available in a segment, we thought we'd be a bit more helpful and curate your shopping a bit with the top-recommended choices reviewed by Autoblog. Objectively speaking, it's tough to beat due to its massive cargo capacity, voluminous back seat, strong-yet-efficient engines, well-balanced driving dynamics, competitive pricing and features,  and well-regarded reliability. It's easy to see why it continues to be such a best-seller: for the vast majority of compact SUV buyers, and especially families, it checks every box. That's been the case for many years now, however. The all-new 2023 Honda CR-V changes things up by adding a bit more style and character, particularly in terms of its interior design and how surprisingly enjoyable the Sport and Sport Touring hybrid trim levels are to drive.

I'm senior editor Greg Migliore and this is your Autoblog Minute Weekly Recap. FCA reached a tentative labor agreement with UAW leadership. The major focus of the new deal reportedly includes: the eventual elimination of the two-tier pay scale [00:00:30] and pooling worker health care. Now that a leadership agreement is in place, the deal will be sent to FCA's rank-and-file. FCA has about 36,000 hourly employees. We got a first look at the interior and exterior of the 10th-generation Civic. Honda expects the new sedan to dominate the C-segment when it hits dealerships later this fall. Civic coupe, five-door hatchback, Si and Type R will all come later. The 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show is in the books and there was a lot of news to get excited about. [00:01:00] Porsche introduced a fully electric concept car in the Mission E. If they make this car, Porsche could give Tesla nightmares. We also saw SUVs from Jaguar and Bentley. There were two beautiful Italian convertibles from Ferrari and Lamborghini. Meanwhile, Mercedes introduced a concept of their own in the IAA - a vehicle that experiments with adaptable aerodynamics. Based on wing, next Civic Type R may go eleventy billion mph

Honda just returned to the hot hatch arena with the new Civic Type R. And what a beast it is. But as we know, there's already a new Civic on its way. That is slated to include a new Type R as well, and that's just what our spy photographers have caught undergoing testing at the Nurburgring. Underneath all that camouflage we can see that this prototype is packing an aggressive front end, a giant rear wing, and a trio of tailpipes protruding out the back. Expect the new Type R to offer even more power than the current one, which already produces a stonking 306 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. That's already enough to propel the existing model to 60 miles per hour in 5.7 seconds and lap the Nordschleife in a front-drive record-beating 7:50.63. (Though not enough to match the Ford Focus RS, as we recently found out.) Best of all, we've got good cause to be optimistic that the new Civic Type R will be offered in the United States (unlike the current one) to dice it with the likes of that new fast Ford. We're told that the new Civic will be rolled out first as a sedan, then as a coupe, followed by the five-door hatch, the warmed-up Civic Si, and finally the Type R. That means we should look for Honda's new hot hatch to arrive in about a year from now as a 2017 model. In the meantime, you can scope out the latest spy shots in the gallery above. Related Video:
