Trucks, SUVs drive U.S. October new vehicle sales
Wed, Nov 1 2017DETROIT — Major automakers posted mixed U.S. new vehicle sales in October on Wednesday, though America's love affair with high-margin pickup trucks and SUVs remained in full bloom as larger, pricier vehicles fared better than passenger cars. Auto industry publication WardsAuto put the seasonally-adjusted annualized rate (SAAR) for light vehicle sales in October at a robust level of 18 million units. But after a long boom cycle, carmakers are still ill-prepared for the slight decline in sales anticipated for full-year 2017 and have taken too few steps to trim production, said Doug Mehl, a partner in consultancy A.T. Kearney's automotive practice. "When you make a new vehicle, you have volume assumptions tagged to it, and who wants to be the guy who says, 'I'm going to make less of this really cool model'?" Mehl said. "But eventually the market is the reality, and it's going to force companies one way or other here." General Motors GM reported a sales drop of 2.2 percent for the month, with consumer sales down 6.6 percent. But sales of high-margin pickup trucks, sport utility vehicles and crossovers all rose. GM also cut its inventory of unsold vehicles — a source of concern for the market — slightly. The automaker has worked to reduce its volume of excess inventory, including through significant production shutdowns in the third quarter. GM had said its inventory would rise in October. "We are heading into the fourth quarter with good momentum, thanks to a strong U.S. economy and very strong pickup and crossover sales," said Kurt McNeil, GM vice president for U.S. sales operations. GM slightly reduced consumer discounts as a percentage of average transaction prices to 13.5 percent, from 13.7 percent in the third quarter. Industry experts believe consumer discounts above 10 percent of the average transaction price are unhealthy as they erode resale values and are unsustainable in the long term. Consultants J.D. Power and LMC said last week that based on preliminary October sales numbers, discounts have exceeded 10 percent in 15 of the past 16 months. Ford The U.S. auto industry posted record sales of 17.55 million vehicles in 2016. New sales received a strong boost in September as consumers replaced vehicles damaged in southeast Texas by Hurricane Harvey the previous month. Full-year 2017 sales are expected to be slightly lower than 2016.
Florida teens flee police, ram deputies with stolen car
Tue, May 3 2016Three Hudson, Florida teens are in juvenile detention today after leading law enforcement on a dangerous high-speed chase in a stolen Honda. According to WFTS, the three unnamed youths were allegedly breaking into cars on the evening of Saturday, April 30 in the Bayonet Point neighborhood in Hudson, FL. Pasco County sheriff's deputies responded to calls about their activities, and when the deputies arrived on the scene, the teens hopped into a stolen Honda and sped off. This prompted a high-speed chase throughout central Pasco County involving both PCS deputies and officers from the Florida Highway Patrol. Bodycam footage released by law enforcement shows officers chasing the reckless teens, ages 13, 14, and 15, throughout the county at speeds approaching 100 miles per hour, where they crashed through barbed wire fences and hopped curbs in an effort to elude pursuit. Eventually, law enforcement cornered the teens on a dead end street, but they refused to give up. In an effort to escape, the driver smashed into four police cruisers before officers finally stopped them. The three alleged car thieves were cuffed and taken into custody on the scene. Luckily, no one was injured during the chase. This is not the youths' first run-in with police. According to the Pasco County Sheriff's office, the three teens, two of whom are brothers, are well-known serial offenders. They are facing a number of charges, including aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, and are currently being held at the Pasco Juvenile Detention center. Consumer Reports' first motorcycle reliability report finds Japanese brands ahead
Sat, 22 Feb 2014Consumer Reports has released its first ever study of motorcycle reliability, and students of its ratings on cars might notice a suspicious similarity - Japanese brands require fewer repairs than the leading American or German brands.
The study analyzed the reliability of 4,680 bikes owned by CR subscribers and found that Yamaha had the best ratings, with just one in ten bikes built between 2009 and 2012 requiring a repair over a four-year period. The makers of the R1 and R6 sport bikes were closely followed by Kawasaki and Honda, while one out of every four of the rumbling bikes from Harley-Davidson experienced an issue. BMW had the worst rating of the brands represented, with one in three bikes having problems.
According to CR, neither Suzuki nor Triumph owners provided enough information for a reliable rating. Based on the responses received, though, Suzuki would have finished with the other Japanese brands and Triumph, being English, would have been one of the less reliable makes.
