Acura NSX GT3 racecar bares all in raw carbon
Thu, Jul 7 2016Acura slowly and dramatically revealed the NSX over a period of years. There were previews, concepts, and lots of teases before Acura finally showed us the whole thing. It's a different story for the racecar. And today, the wraps come off the FIA GT3-spec NSX to show all of its bare-carbon glory. The NSX GT3 strips away more than just the paint from the standard road car. The racecar comes sans hybrid system, meaning all the power from the twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 is sent solely to the rear wheels. Modifications to the body include a large rear wing, underbody diffuser, and bigger hood vents for engine cooling. While the hybrid system may be gone, the NSX GT3 uses the same block, heads, valvetrain, crankshaft, pistons, and dry sump lubrication system as the road car. Power is sent through a six-speed sequential gearbox instead of the road car's nine-speed. The NSX GT3 will be built alongside the street version in Ohio. Honda engineers in Japan and North America shared in the development. Final GT3 homologation will be completed by the company's Honda Performance Division in Santa Clarita, CA. Related video:
Florida teens flee police, ram deputies with stolen car
Tue, May 3 2016Three Hudson, Florida teens are in juvenile detention today after leading law enforcement on a dangerous high-speed chase in a stolen Honda. According to WFTS, the three unnamed youths were allegedly breaking into cars on the evening of Saturday, April 30 in the Bayonet Point neighborhood in Hudson, FL. Pasco County sheriff's deputies responded to calls about their activities, and when the deputies arrived on the scene, the teens hopped into a stolen Honda and sped off. This prompted a high-speed chase throughout central Pasco County involving both PCS deputies and officers from the Florida Highway Patrol. Bodycam footage released by law enforcement shows officers chasing the reckless teens, ages 13, 14, and 15, throughout the county at speeds approaching 100 miles per hour, where they crashed through barbed wire fences and hopped curbs in an effort to elude pursuit. Eventually, law enforcement cornered the teens on a dead end street, but they refused to give up. In an effort to escape, the driver smashed into four police cruisers before officers finally stopped them. The three alleged car thieves were cuffed and taken into custody on the scene. Luckily, no one was injured during the chase. This is not the youths' first run-in with police. According to the Pasco County Sheriff's office, the three teens, two of whom are brothers, are well-known serial offenders. They are facing a number of charges, including aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, and are currently being held at the Pasco Juvenile Detention center. Honda MC-? will use solar-powered chargers in 'micro' EV tests
Mon, Feb 3 2014Honda is envisioning what it calls a CO2-free society and, not surprisingly, it's a rather sunny one, in one Japanese city, at least. The Japanese automaker is kicking off a test program with the micro-electric-vehicle that will use power generated via photovoltaic energy collected and stored at EV charging stations. Yes, the big old sun will power those little-bitty MC-? cars. MC-? is shorthand for "Micro Computer Beta" and the car is certainly an appropriate vehicle for these tests. The car is 98 inches long (about eight inches shorter than a Smart ForTwo) and has a 43-mile-per-hour top speed as well as an electric motor that delivers a meager eight horsepower. The car is designed to meet Europe's quadricycle regulations and has a 50-mile single-charge range. No word on if or when it'll go into production, of course, but Honda and Toshiba are working with Japan's Miyakojima City on the project, with Toshiba responsible for building three solar-powered EV-charging stations. The Japanese automaker unveiled the latest incarnation of the 1+1 tandem-seating-arrangement MC-? last fall. Micro-sized EV Using Renewable Energy TOKYO, Japan, January 28, 2014 - Jointly with Miyakojima City and Toshiba Corporation, Honda Motor Co., Ltd. began experimental test-driving of the MC-?, Honda's micro-sized EV, using photovoltaic (PV) energy as part of the Miyakojima City Small-sized Electromotive Mobility Project*1. Through this experimental program, Honda will operate an environmentally-responsible micro-sized EV using renewable energy, and work together with the local community to explore the possibility of a CO2-free society. In November 2013, Honda began separate field tests jointly conducted with Kumamoto Prefecture, Saitama City and Miyakojima City using the MC-?. For the field tests in Miyakojima City, as a part of the initiative as an environmentally-responsible model city, the feasibility of the introduction and utilization of small-sized electromotive mobility products and electricity supply facilities are being verified. For this particular driving experiment in the city using renewable energy, the MC-? will be charged from three new PV recharging stations newly built by Toshiba.
