What can I say about Jane Honda? She’s been my stalwart companion for the past 7 years.

I purchased Jane in 2006, at which point she had only 62,500 miles. The previous owner had, in fact, been the quintessential “little old lady that only drove it on Sundays.” I bought it from the woman’s son who couldn’t keep it because he worked for a Ford dealer in Kansas City.

Since then, I’ve put almost 165,000 miles on her, mostly on the highways in and around the Kansas City, KS, and, more recently, Houston, TX, areas. The bulk of these were racked up between 2008 and 2012 when I worked as a same-day delivery courier for a pharmacy in Lawrence, KS, making runs to Kansas City (~100 miles roundtrip) and driving an average of about 35,000 miles per year.

Because that was my livelihood at the time, I was obsessive about maintenance, getting the oil changed at the dealership every 5,000 miles or so.

Maintenance history:

The following is the maintenance history for which I have records – there are a few gaps (in 2007-2008, 2010-2011, and 2012).

·         Clarion FB275BT Bluetooth stereo head unit installed in 2008 and still working great for connecting mp3 players via the aux input jack and iPhones, etc, via Bluetooth. This head unit does NOT have a CD player.

Jane Honda still serves as my daily commuter, runs great, and doesn’t burn a drop of oil. Since replacing the head cover gasket, even the slight seep around the head cover has ceased. But I need a newer car with four doors for my work, and I don’t have a garage where I can keep Jane as a backup.

For someone with reasonable equipment and inclination to work on her, Jane’s still got a lot of life left in her. I could easily imagine someone getting 400k+ miles out of her if the maintenance is kept up.

Transaction details:

Jane is being sold AS IS, without warranty of any kind. The current Kansas title includes a bill of sale on the back that will be signed over to the buyer upon receipt of payment. From there, you can proceed with registration.

I’ll be sorry to part ways with her, but glad to see her go to a good home.

Thanks for looking.

2016 Honda Civic Coupe spied inside and out

Fri, Sep 4 2015

Honda may be prepared to unveil the 2016 Civic Coupe on Sept. 16, but that doesn't mean work is done on the eagerly anticipated new fastback. Honda is continuing testing, as evidenced by this latest round of photos, which even gives us a glimpse of the cabin. As we can see, the exterior's shape has been toned down compared to the concept shown earlier this year in New York City, although the overall fastback rear end, high beltline, and generally aggressive styling is still present. Closer details, particularly around the front fascia, are harder to discern owing to the camouflage. The last-generation Civic did things very wrong. It went budget at a time when compact consumers demanded more premium features, options, and materials. Things were so bad that Honda had to rush a lackluster refresh to market. But with the new Civic, it finally looks like the Japanese brand is on its A-game. While plastic appears to still be the dominant material, the quality on display looks like it's been elevated substantially. The steering wheel is small, relatively sporting, and wrapped in black leather, while the beige leather seats look to have a modest dose of bolstering. The switch gear looks good, almost like it's been plucked from a higher-end model, like the Pilot, while our spies report that there will be a better array of optional extras, including stuff that's shown up as part of the Honda sensing suite of technology. Check out the spy images at the top of the page, and be sure to head back here on Sept. 16 for the Civic's official unveiling. Related Video:

Poor headlights cause 40 cars to miss IIHS Top Safety Pick rating

Mon, Aug 6 2018

Over the past few months, we've noticed a number of cars and SUVs that have come incredibly close to earning one of the IIHS's highest accolades, the Top Safety Pick rating. They have great crash test scores and solid automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning systems. What trips them up is headlights. That got us wondering, how many vehicles are there that are coming up short because they don't have headlights that meet the organization's criteria for an "Acceptable" or "Good" rating. This is a revision made after 2017, a year in which headlights weren't factored in for this specific award. This is also why why some vehicles, such as the Ford F-150, might have had the award last year, but have lost it for this year. We reached out to someone at IIHS to find out. He responded with the following car models. Depending on how you count, a whopping 40 models crash well enough to receive the rating, but don't get it because their headlights are either "Poor" or "Marginal." We say depending on how you count because the IIHS actual counts truck body styles differently, and the Infiniti Q70 is a special case. Apparently the version of the Q70 that has good headlights doesn't have adequate forward collision prevention technology. And the one that has good forward collision tech doesn't have good enough headlights. We've provided the entire list of vehicles below in alphabetical order. Interestingly, it seems the Volkswagen Group is having the most difficulty providing good headlights with its otherwise safe cars. It had the most models on the list at 9 split between Audi and Volkswagen. GM is next in line with 7 models. It is worth noting again that though these vehicles have subpar headlights and don't quite earn Top Safety Pick awards, that doesn't mean they're unsafe. They all score well enough in crash testing and forward collision prevention that they would get the coveted award if the lights were better.

Leno meets the nicest people on his bored-out Honda CB750

Tue, 08 Jul 2014

Jay Leno's Garage is back to its tried-and-true formula this week with Jay taking a close look at a seriously cool vehicle with a guest. This time he invites in Adam Gaspic from Gasser Custom to take a look at a highly customized 1975 Honda CB750.
The bike is really an amalgam of styles from different eras and various Honda parts. Its looks are inspired by '50s hot rods with its white-wall tires and satin, metallic fuel tank, but there is a little British café racer in there, as well. A digital instrument panel and LED turn signals lend an air of modernity to it, too. Mechanically, the bike rides on a modified '75 frame with the front and rear suspension from an '80s Honda. However, the pièce de résistance is its engine, bored out to 836cc with additional head work and a custom exhaust.
Once on the road, the bike really sings. It sounds just the way a classic Japanese motorcycle should with a mix of whine at high-revs with rumble down low. A cycle that mixes this many styles should probably be a mess, but this fuses it all together perfectly. Scroll down to take a look at this motorcycle mixing classic and modern in Jay Leno's Garage.
