Up for auction is a 1986 Honda Accord with 35K original One-Owner miles, automatic transmission. This gem is a "lady-owned," well maintained vehicle that has spent most of its life garaged. It was used to drive short distances to work and around town on weekends. No long-haul road trips. In recent years, with work-on-internet, it has been driven only on weekends.

The car has never been in an accident, has never had any major mechanical malfunctions, and has had routine maintenance and inspections. With normal use, there have been replacement batteries, bulbs, wiper blades, brake pads, etc., but nothing beyond that. There are no discernible leaks; not a single spot on the concrete floor of the garage.

The ONLY thing missing is: the trunk carpet. I removed it at a car wash, to vacuum it, and after cleaning the trunk, I drove away -- without the carpet! I didn't discover it missing until a day later . . . yes, I went back, but it was gone. In its place I have used a 4 x 5 grey synthetic rug, which fits well and protects the inside. The original white trunk liner remains, and underneath that is the original, unused, donut spare tire, and original jack and lug wrench.

NEW PARTS: There is a brand new battery (May 2013); all four tires are Michelin Radial Weatherwise Sport tires, 185/70 R13, purchased last year, with practically no wear -- less than 200 miles.

A NEW WATER PUMP and TIMING BELT, new in original packaging, not installed, are included with the car, (see photo), with original receipt, and are ready for installation by buyer. Receipts are included, and shown in photos.

Also included is a CD Repair Manual for Honda Accords 1986-1989. This is a pdf document with diagrams and instructions for any and all possible maintenance and repairs.

A passenger-side rear-view mirror has been added, which is adjustable from inside.

The AC, heat, defrosters, wipers, lights, original AM/FM radio and cassette player work fine.

Interior is all original, and is in fine condition. Seats, carpet, and all interior upholstery are soft and clean, no stains or rips. This has been a SMOKE-FREE, PET-FREE car for all its life.

NOTE: I am not a mechanic, and though I think it runs well, it could use a tune-up and may have issues I am not aware of. It's a very zippy little car to drive, with a low center of gravity, and handles like a sportscar. Gas mileage is excellent -- 30 mpg or better.

As pictured, the flaws to this Accord are minimal: Small dimples and dings, mainly on the hood and rear fenders. The amount of rust is so tiny it was difficult to show in photos -- there are three approximately nickel-sized rust spots, shown in several of the photos. There is a small scrape on the right rear fender, by the tail light, a small dent in the left rear fender, and some dimples on the hood. None of these is deep enough to have progressed to rust. Most difficult to show in photos are extremely fine, spider-web-like lines beneath the finish, purely cosmetic -- see close-up photo near bottom of pictures. I will be posting additional photos by Monday, May 20.

The paint is all original. I was planning to give the whole car a going-over with rubbing compound and paste wax, which I think would do away with superficial scratches, but decided to leave that to the buyer, who may feel it's not needed.

Please refer to photos for details!!

No S660 for US, but Honda wants sporty cars

Mon, Aug 31 2015

Honda, best known lately for being a mainstream player rather than the brand that brought us the CRX Si, NSX, Integra Type-R, and S2000, apparently wants to builds sporty cars for the US again. With that in mind (or not), Honda has ruled out bringing the tiny, sporty S660 roadster across the Pacific. "I wouldn't put my chips on [the S660]," American Honda Executive Vice President John Mendel told Automotive News. At nearly 11.1 feet long, the S660 slots in between the 12.8-foot Mazda MX-5 Miata and the 8.8-foot Smart ForTwo. Yet Mendel says the tiny two-seater wouldn't work here. "When the practicalities of the market come in, and the car only so big, that might not be the best car for the US market," Mendel said. "It might be better for India or China or somewhere else." Honda is considering its options here in the US, though. As AN reports, after his takeover earlier this year, new CEO Takahiro Hachigo promised more sporting models, like the new, US-bound, 300-horsepower Civic Type R. And while it's no secret that Honda has filed patent drawings for a mid-engine model, Mendel offered little to indicate that it'd become a reality. Calling the project from Honda's Silicon Valley research and design facility a "design study," Mendel wouldn't answer AN when it asked whether this new model was successor to the S2000 or a more attainable, lower-powered NSX. He did, however, say his company was getting pressure from dealers over the lack of verve in the company's lineup. "They want anything in the sports car world," Mendel told AN. "They're going, 'Gimme a sports car.' They want a retractable hardtop; they want a high-horsepower $20,000 sports car. Because that's the nature of what they do." There you are, Honda. Your dealers want it, which means your consumers are probably are asking for it, and your CEO wants it, too. Make something happen.

2016 Honda Accord Coupe V6 Quick Spin

Wed, Nov 25 2015

Popular opinion is that Honda has not been a friend to enthusiasts in recent years. The company killed the awesome S2000, got away from building low-cost driver's cars like the CRX, ruined the Civic Si (on multiple occasions, most notably in 2002 and again in 2012), and kind of neutered Acura into a listless near-premium brand devoid of its original charm. But there are bright spots: We're finally going to get a Civic Type R in the US, and while the new NSX is a long way from the lightweight original, it's still an extremely impressive specimen. And then there's the Accord Coupe, which doesn't necessarily look like a typical performance Honda on first glance. Honda has been building the two-door Accord for decades, even as virtually every other mainstream brand has abandoned the segment. What's even more interesting, is that Honda makes one for the car guys. The company builds a V6-powered, two-door coupe with a six-speed manual transmission that probably accounts for maybe half a percent of the Accord's overall volume. Such a blatant disregard for things like economies of scale could only be achieved by a brand with a real passion for performance. Now that the Accord has been fully refreshed for 2016, we set out to revisit our V6/manual hero. Driving Notes This naturally aspirated V6 produces 278 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque, which admittedly isn't as much as you'd get from the slightly larger V6 engines you'd find in the likes of the Dodge Challenger, Chevrolet Camaro, or Ford Mustang. But the Honda is extremely willing to rev. That, combined with a startlingly smooth, linear torque curve, means the 3.5-liter Earth Dreams V6 is remarkably composed in both normal and aggressive driving. Low-end grunt is easy to access, despite the 6,200-rpm torque peak, while the throttle response is relatively sharp for what you might expect in an Accord. It sounds spectacular too, with a howly, Civic Si-worthy exhaust note and a notable lack of any piped-in induction silliness. It simply sounds like, you know, an engine – and a very good one at that. The buttery smooth, six-speed manual transmission has a light action, making this a true case where all you need to shift is a flick of the wrist. The clutch pedal is light and the catch point is almost too broad, meaning it's easy to ride the clutch until you get used to this setup. Once you adjust, heel-and-toeing this front-drive coupe actually becomes an entertaining activity.

Honda S660 proving popular with middle-age Japanese buyers

Tue, Aug 11 2015

The S660 roadster has been a success so far for Honda. (At least, that is, insofar as a niche-market sports car limited to the Japanese Domestic Market can be considered a big seller.) It just hasn't resonated with the customers that the company expected. Honda revealed the S660 in concept form at the Tokyo Motor Show nearly two years ago, and subsequently put it into production. The convertible Kei car pays homage to models like the S500, S2000, and Beat. It packs a tiny 660cc three-cylinder engine mounted amidships and driving the rear wheels. Despite its connection to past models, the S660 features an entirely modern design that, along with its low price, was expected to appeal to younger buyers. But while Honda has already sold out all 8,600 examples it's slated to build this year, a surprising 80 percent of them have been snapped up by customers over the age of 40 who are mostly buying them as second cars. The development is not entirely isolated. As Bloomberg points out, the number of licensed drivers in Japan "under the age of 40 has fallen 46 percent over the last 13 years." Those are rather startling numbers that dwindle the market down for youth-oriented vehicles like the S660. Honda is expected to begin taking orders for next year's allocation of S660s in October. At that point, the company anticipates the average age of its customer base will drop. But with fewer young drivers on the road in Japan, it shouldn't expect it to drop by much.
