For sale is my mother's 1999 Honda Civic VP Sedan.

Despite its flat paint, this car is in outstanding condition. I just invested $1100 in repairs, parts and accessories. The car runs smooth and strong, and it just got the shot in the arm it needed to go another couple hundred thousand miles.

Features:
  • 1.6L 4-cylinder engine
  • automatic transmission
  • A/C
  • power door locks
  • power steering
  • tilt steering wheel
  • adjustable seatbelt shoulder height
  • dual front air bags
  • AM/FM/CD stereo
I just had it in for extensive service at Yost Automotive II in Austin, TX, and they performed a pre-sale inspection that I can share with you. I'm also happy to take it to your mechanic of choice (in the Austin area) if you want a second opinion.

Yost did the following ($924 on April 7):
  • full buyer's check
  • state inspection
  • oil change, filter & lube
  • transmission flush & fluid replacement
  • replace blake fluid
  • replace front brake rotors
  • replace front brake pads
  • performance/leak check & recharge A/C
  • four wheel full alignment
  • replace third brake lamp bulb
The car runs great - starts right up every time, idles smoothly, has plenty of power and drives and stops straight and strong. It's very clean and in great condition for its age.

I replaced the battery about a year ago and it has years of life left. The tires are also very fresh with few miles on them - they look almost new. One downside is that I didn't drive the car for several months, and the tires developed minor flat spots that cause slight vibration at freeway speeds (I start to feel it around ~60 mph). A/C blows cold after the recharge service.

I also just performed a tune-up ($99 on April 10):
  • replaced spark plugs (NGK V-Power)
  • replaced spark plug wires (NGK Premium)
  • replaced ignition rotor, distributor cap & o-ring
  • replaced windshield wiper blades
  • Sea Foam vacuum hose treatment
  • fuel injector cleaner
The only mechanical issues with the car that I'm aware of:
  • power door lock actuators are weak, so power door locks don't always work (driver's door always has for me; rears usually do, front passenger can be flaky)
  • struts are getting old; one squeaks a bit at colder temperatures
  • radiator hoses and oil pan gasket are getting old
  • stereo head unit seems to be acting wonky; could probably use an aftermarket stereo (usually ~$150 installed)
  • slight vibration at freeway speeds due to flat spots on tires (I didn't drive it for a while)
The remaining issues are purely cosmetic:
  • paint is shot; car will need a respray if you're concerned about looks
  • fuse box door surround is broken (it's beneath the dash, so you won't see it)
  • minor dings and scratches on body; nothing serious
Note that none of these issues require immediate attention, so you'll have a lot more miles on the car until you need to put any money into it.

The car has never been in an accident, and the body is straight with no major dents. It was never raced, joyridden or otherwise abused in any way. This was my mom's daily driver for a dozen years and she always serviced it at recommended intervals (or before) at a quality auto shop.

Comes with:
  • new Honda (OEM) floor mats
  • new wheel covers (OEM replica)
  • owner's manual
  • key & radio fob for door locks
  • current registration sticker (expires 03/15)
  • current inspection sticker (expires 04/15)
  • compact spare tire and tools in trunk
This would make a great first car for a high school or college student, or just good reliable transportation for anyone. The car gets great gas mileage, is very cheap to maintain and insure, and shouldn't require any more service for quite a while.

Title is clean & clear, in hand, no liens, ready to sign over

Asking $3600 OBO. You'll find cheaper and prettier copies of this car, but not in nearly as good mechanical condition, and especially not with over $1100 in service just completed.

Keep in mind that while there are still a few issues with the car, I'm being upfront about them, whereas many other owners will say "runs great" and forget to mention the timing belt that's about to break. This car has a clean bill of health save for a few minor issues, and you know exactly what you're getting.

I'm happy to answer any questions. Thanks!

Honda China struggling with high-end Accord because Chinese covet German cars, too

Sun, 06 Jul 2014

It's not particularly unusual to see cheap cars in China, or those with designs stolen from foreign competitors, but increasingly the best-selling vehicles there would be very recognizable to just about any auto enthusiast. There appears to be one fact of life whether looking at car buyers in Sacramento, Stuttgart or Shanghai: People who can afford to buy premium cars often look first at the Germans.
Honda recently thought that it could challenge this perceived wisdom by including a premium Accord in the ninth-generation sedan's Chinese launch last year. The market-exclusive version was priced against the Audi A4. The venture failed, miserably.
According to Automotive News China, sales for the new Accord in China are down 37 percent through May of this year. Honda's overall sales are actually up by about 11 percent there on the strength of smaller, less profitable models. However, the company is still off its forecast 19-percent rise.

Toyota raises Japanese base wages for first time since 2008

Fri, 14 Mar 2014

Toyota is on track for record profits, and in return, its Japanese workers are receiving their first increase in base wages since 2008, plus higher pay based on seniority and a larger bonus for 2014. The Japanese automaker predicts the average laborer will net a 2.9 percent income gain.
The average Toyota employee will earn 2,700 yen ($26.28) more each month, a 0.8 percent increase from last year. Workers will also receive about 7,300 yen ($71.09) more monthly based on seniority and promotions. Finally, the company's union pushed through a median bonus of 2.44 million yen ($23,768) for 2014, the highest in 6 years.
The pay boost comes as Toyota forecasts a record 1.9-trillion yen ($18.5 billion) profit for the fiscal year ending on March 31, according to Bloomberg. It has been helped by the Japanese government's efforts to weaken the yen on international markets and expand inflation. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been asking businesses to increase compensation to end years of deflation and offset upcoming higher sales taxes. Honda and Nissan have also raised their wages there in recent months.

Honda Civic Type R Concept hits the ground running ahead of Geneva debut

Mon, 03 Mar 2014

We've seen it teased, caught it testing, hell, we've even driven the thing, but until just now, we hadn't been privy to the visual drama that is the all-new Honda Civic Type R Concept. Thankfully, the day before the start of the Geneva Motor Show is about as leaky as Robert Redford's sailboat.
We'll get the full details tomorrow - which may even include a discourse on Honda's 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that will make upwards of 280 horsepower and propel the car to Nürburgring-record-braking velocities. After all, the "Concept" portion of most Honda concept cars is generally lip-service only.
In fact, save for those blacked out windows and, perhaps, a couple millimeters of ride height and those extra-aggro wheels, we pretty much expect the production Type R to look like the beast you see here. Certainly the swooping form and 'roided wheel arches suit the boy-racer persona of the Civic very well; we wouldn't even put it past Honda's funky European arm to sell the final product with some version of that bi-plane wing.
