HyFive hydrogen infrastructure gets $51M boost across Europe
Fri, Apr 4 2014"High five!" was one of the catch-phrases of Sacha Baron Cohen's Kazakh comedic alter ego Borat. A real-world HyFive is being announced by a power broker named Boris. And this is serious business. London Mayor Boris Johnson has announced a program called HyFive, which will see automakers and other entities invest 31 million British pounds ($51 million US) in a demonstration project for hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. By next year, London will have three hydrogen refueling stations, while there will be one each in the Danish cities of Aarhus and Odense and one in Innsbruck, Austria. Leaders of the program are planning for other stations in Sweden, Germany and Italy. The five participating automakers are BMW, Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler, Honda, Hyundai and Toyota, while other companies involved include Copenhagen Hydrogen Network, ITM Power and Linde. Those OEMs will make 110 fuel-cell vehicles available for deployment in Bolzano, Copenhagen, Innsbruck, London, Munich and Stuttgart. The program represents an effort to address the "chicken or egg?" challenge inherent to establishing a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle market. While the powertrain technology provides benefits by combining fossil-fuel-like refueling times with long driving ranges and zero emissions, establishing a refueling network and building fuel-cell vehicles is prohibitively expensive, especially in low volumes. The London mayor is no stranger to green transportation technology. Late last year, Johnson made himself available for a photo opportunity with Ecotive and Frazer-Nash, which had developed a six-passenger extended-range plug-in taxicab. Honda withdraws LMP2 prototype from Pikes Peak
Thu, Jun 25 2015Things don't always go as planned, especially when it comes to racing. That's the lesson that Honda had to learn the hard way at Pikes Peak this year. Unfortunately that means that the ARX-04b LMP2 prototype won't be running up the mountain in this weekend's Race to the Clouds. Honda was slated to run its new LMP2 prototype at Pikes Peak, but a series of misfortunes meant that the entry had to be withdrawn. The prototype was set back with a series of mechanical difficulties, chief among them a turbocharger failure that inflicted damage on the vehicle's engine. That left Honda with little choice but to withdraw the entry. "We some had some problems that forced us to miss practice on Tuesday and Wednesday," Honda spokesman Eric Mauk confirmed in correspondence with Autoblog. Given that Justin Wilson – despite his extensive experience particularly in open wheels – is considered a rookie at this event, "race rules state that he must practice all three sections of the race course before the race. With just two days of practice left (you can only practice one section a day due to time constraints), we could not do that, so we had to withdraw." It's an unfortunate turn of events for Honda and Wilson, to be sure, but the manufacturer will still be entering a number of other vehicles at Pikes Peak this weekend. Included among them are the electric CR-Z prototype, and the NSX that is serving as pace car for the event. All told, Honda is fielding 13 entries in 11 different classes.
Honda patents engine with different cylinder displacements
Mon, May 9 2016A basic rule of engine design states that the displacement of a cylinder is equal to the engine's total displacement divided by its cylinder count. Honda, according to a recently surfaced Japanese patent, is looking to break that rule with an engine containing cylinders of different sizes. We've done our best to translate it from patent-ese. The idea is that different-sized combustion chambers give more flexibility when any combination of cylinders are deactivated, or rested. Because the different numbers can be combined in various ways, it provides more and smaller increments than would an engine with equal-displacement cylinders. Take a 2.0-liter four-cylinder, for example. Following the golden displacement rule, each of the four cylinders has a volume of 500 cc, giving displacement increments of 500 cc when any cylinder is deactivated. But suppose instead that the four cylinders displace 300, 425, 600, and 675 cc, respectively. This would give the engine 15 available displacements instead of just four, and the spacing between each option would be far less than 500cc. As a result, those different virtual displacements would provide more adjustment between power and efficiency than a cylinder-deactivation system can on a conventional engine. Honda's patent describes cylinders with equal bore size, with the displacement from cylinder to cylinder varying based on the crank throw radius – the longer the throw, the longer the stroke and the larger the displacement of that particular combustion chamber. The patent describes how the cylinder sizes would need to be arranged to spread the load on the crankshaft and presumably limit vibration that would be introduced by the different pulse magnitudes. If we're interpreting things correctly, the largest cylinder (the one with the longest crank throw radius) sits in the middle of the bank with the smaller ones alternating on either side as they decrease in displacement. This concept is described for multi-cylinder inline and V-type engines of various sizes. The patent was filed in March of 2014 and published in January of this year. Whether or not this arrangement will reach production is of course unknown, but the advantages in terms of both efficiency and power seem promising.
