Recharge Wrap-up: Eberhard helps Chinese EV maker in US, 'Hail a Honda' at Austin City Limits

Wed, Sep 28 2016

Honda is partnering with nonprofit ridesharing service Ride Austin to provide "Hail A Honda" service during the Austin City Limits Music Festival. For both weekends of the festival (Sept. 30 – Oct. 2 and Oct. 7 – Oct. 9), attendees can ride to the event for free in a special liveried 2016 Honda CR-V. The Ride Austin app will feature a "Honda at ACL Festival" tab to hail rides, and users will get a free bandana and water. 2016 marks Honda's eighth year as an Austin City Limits sponsor, and the automaker hosts its own stage at the event. Read more from Honda. Tesla cofounder Martin Eberhard is helping a Chinese EV company enter the US market. Chongqing Sokon Industry Group says it has hired Eberhard as a consultant with a two-year contract. Sokon has created a US-based subsidiary called SF Motors, and Eberhard will manage "the integration of the world's top talent for new energy vehicles, to promote the company's product positioning, R&D, design, technical innovation, talent pool, marketing, in the United States." Since helping to found Tesla, Eberhard has worked on EVs with Volkswagen, Atieva, and as an investor in Alta Motors. Read more at Electrek. A supplier for the Tesla Model 3 describes the automaker's perfectionism. Fuji Technica, a die maker supplying aluminum dies for the Model 3, describes its relationship with Tesla in an article from the Nikkei Asian Review. The company calls Tesla a demanding customer, asking for very specific shapes despite the difficulty of working with aluminum. Fuji Technica must work some dies by hand to achieve Tesla's "meticulous specifications." The company is proud of its achievements, though, especially considering its turnaround after years of financial troubles. Read more from the Nikkei Asian Review, and at Inside EVs. Green self-driving cars take center stage in Tokyo

Sat, Oct 31 2015

Visions of cars that drive themselves without emitting a bit of pollution while entertaining passengers with online movies and social media are what's taking center stage at the Tokyo Motor Show. Japan, home to the world's top-selling automaker, has a younger generation disinterested in owning or driving cars. The show is about wooing them back. It's also about pushing an ambitious government-backed plan that paints Japan as a leader in automated driving technology. Reporters got a preview look at the exhibition Wednesday, ahead of its opening to the public Oct. 30. Nissan Motor Co. showed a concept vehicle loaded with laser scanners, a 360 degree camera setup, a radar and computer chips so the car can "think" to deliver autonomous driving. The Japanese automaker called it IDS, which stands for "intelligent driving system." Nissan, based in Yokohama, Japan, said it will offer some autonomous driving features by the end of next year in Japan. By 2018, it said vehicles with the technology will be able to conduct lane changes on highways. By 2020, such vehicles will be able to make their way through intersections on regular urban roads. Nissan officials said they were working hard to make the car smart enough to recognize the difference between a red traffic light and a tail light, learn how to turn on intersections where white lane indicators might be missing and anticipate from body language when a pedestrian might cross a street. Nissan's IDS vehicle is also electric, with a new battery that's more powerful than the one currently in the automaker's Leaf electric vehicle. Although production and sales plans were still undecided, it can travel a longer distance on a single charge and recharge more quickly. A major challenge for cars that drive themselves is winning social acceptance. They would have to share the roads with normal cars with drivers as well as with pedestrians, animals and unexpected objects. That's why some automakers at the show are packing the technology into what looks more like a golf cart or scooter than a car, such as Honda Motor Co.'s cubicle-like Wander Stand and Wander Walker scooter. Instead of trying to venture on freeways and other public roads, these are designed for controlled environments, restricted to shuttling people to pre-determined destinations. At a special section of the show, visitors can try out some of the so-called "smart mobility" devices such as Honda's seat on a single-wheel as well as small electric vehicles.

The 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback is here: all turbo, manual optional

Mon, Aug 15 2016

The car you see above may look familiar. Honda showed a mildly conceptified version of the tenth-gen Civic hatch in March, and just last week a production model was caught being loaded onto a ship. Now it's finally here and official, and we can tell you that a hatchback Civic will once again be sold in the US starting this fall. Utility lovers rejoice. This new body style joins the somewhat-hatch-looking sedan and the coupe Honda has been selling for about a year. It will be available in LX, Sport, EX, EX-L, and Sport Touring trims, with that last one being a new addition. All will get Honda's 1.5-liter turbo four offered in upper trims of the sedan and coupe, but they won't all get the same amount of power: LX, EX, and EX-L models will use a 174-hp version, while anything that says Sport on the back gets bumped up to a 180-hp tune, thanks in part to the sweet center-exit exhaust you see on the car above. Torque doesn't vary between the trims – it's 162 lb-ft on all of them. The other exciting bit of news is that the hatchback (along with other 2017 Civics) will be available with the turbo engine and a manual – in the same car. (For 2016, turbo coupes and sedans were sold exclusively with the CVT, and the manual was offered only on lower trims with a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four.) The six-speed stick will be standard on LX, Sport, and EX models, while the CVT will be available on those trim levels and standard on the others. The turbo engine is a charmer, and we have said from the start that it would be that much better with a stick, even though most people will choose the CVT anyway. But yay for freedom of choice. Equipment should pretty well mirror what's available on the same trims in the two- and four-doors, with the exception of that new Sport Touring trim. It sounds like that will be Touring equipment – including the Honda Sensing suite of safety tech (available on other trims), Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, and LED headlights – plus some more sport-like looks and the power bump. Civic hatches will be built exclusively at Honda's plant in Swindon, England. Fun fact: The last Civic hatch to be sold in the US, the oddball 2002–2005 Si, came from the same factory. Big changes come in the rear, obvs, and include a hatch with glass that's bisected (something Honda loves to do) by a spoiler spanning the taillights.
