Honda Civic losing ground to Toyota Corolla, sales crown threatened
Wed, Dec 17 2014Oh, what a difference a year has made. When the numbers were tallied for 2013, the Honda Civic was riding high by claiming its segment's sales crown in the US despite being challenged by the latest generation of the Toyota Corolla for part of the year. However, with just a month to go in the battle for C-segment supremacy in 2014, it looks like Toyota gets to hoist the trophy this time. Looking at November sales numbers, Honda moved 300,644 Civics through the first 11 months of the year, down 2.1 percent in volume. Furthermore, for the month alone, the company sold 23,060 Civics, a 12.3 percent drop. Meanwhile, on Toyota's side, business has been booming comparatively. Through the first 11 months it sold 309,373 Corollas, a 10.6 percent jump, and for November alone it moved 25,609 examples, a 14.2 percent improvement. With fewer than 10,000 cars between them, it would take quite a December slump for the Corolla to lose this fight. According to The Truth About Cars, the Civic actually started out the 2014 somewhat positively with 5 percent growth over the previous year, though still behind the Corolla's figures. However, the Honda has seen a slide since then with five consecutive months of sales drops. Meanwhile, the Toyota has generally kept showing growth. Being the newer model of the two, the Corolla comes to this fight with an advantage. Honda hasn't let the Civic languish; it gave the model a CVT in 2014 to boost fuel economy. That's nothing like the Toyota's thorough recent rethink, though. According to TTAC, Honda does have reason to crow about the Civic, just not necessarily in the US. The model is on track to be the bestselling vehicle in Canada for the 17th consecutive year and have its best sales since 2008 there.
Takata airbag victim urges consumers to head to the dealership
Wed, Aug 3 2016A man who lost an eye in a low speed collision due to faulty Takata airbags is urging the owners of cars with recalled parts to take their vehicles into a dealership, before it's too late. The public service announcement comes from ConsumerWatch.com. In a video, the consumer rights website gives factual information about the recall, and adds a personal plea from Corey Burdick. The Florida man lost an eye due to shrapnel from an exploding Takata airbag. The Orlando Sentinel reported that Burdick was traveling just 15 mph in his Honda Civic when he collided with another car. There were no other injuries caused by the crash, except for the loss of Burdick's eye. He filed a lawsuit against Honda and Takata this year. "I lost my eye because of a defective airbag. Take your car in today so this doesn't happen to you," Burdick said. ConsumerWatch.com told Honda and Acura owners not to drive their vehicles until the faulty airbags were replaced. Good advice, as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also recently advised owners of 2001-03 Hondas and Acuras to get their airbags replaced immediately. NHTSA says airbag inflators in those vehicles have up to a 50 percent chance of exploding in an accident. But replacing the airbags isn't as easy as simply going into the dealership. Many owners who take their cars in for replacement are finding out that new parts are in short supply as manufacturers grapple with the largest automotive recall in US history. Takata may not have enough replacements until 2019, CNN reported earlier this year. The problem is so pervasive that some brand new cars were found to be sitting on dealer lots with faulty airbags still in place months after the initial recall. Some cars have received replacements that were also faulty and now will require a second trip to the dealer. However, waiting is not an option for many owners. At least 13 people have been killed and over 100 injuries have been blamed on the airbags. Honda Clarity enters hydrogen competition with $369 lease price
Fri, Nov 18 2016Ok, so we were wrong. When Honda said in January that the monthly lease price for the 2017 Clarity Fuel Cell sedan would be "under $500," we assumed that that meant, oh, maybe $499. After all, that's what the two other hydrogen vehicles available in the US, the Toyota Mirai and the Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell, cost [ See below]. Given that the Mirai's $57,500 MSRP and the Clarity's then-expected $60k price tag, we figured the lease prices would pretty much match, too. Mea culpa. Honda just announced that the Clarity will lease for just $369 a month for 36 months, with $2,499 due at signing. That price includes $15,000 of fuel over three years and 20,000 annual miles. As with other advanced technology vehicles, Honda is making traditional vehicles available for times when the hydrogen car's 366-mile range and weak refueling infrastructure isn't enough to get you where you want to go. The fuel cell vehicle will be available in California at some point yet in 2016, but only to people who, "live or work near Honda's network of 12 approved fuel cell vehicle dealerships located in select California markets." There are six such dealerships in Southern California, five in the Bay Area and one in Sacramento, Honda says. UPDATE: Totally forgot that Toyota dropped Mirai pricing to $349 earlier this year. We've adjusted the headline. Related Video: Featured Gallery Honda Clarity Fuel Cell News Source: Honda Green Honda Hydrogen Cars lease honda clarity
