Recharge Wrap-up: Honda Grace hybrid goes on sale in Japan, Daimler spends 100M euros on batteries

The Mercedes-Benz S-500 Plug-In Hybrid has earned an Environmental Certificate from the TUV Sud technical inspection authority. The award is based on a lifecycle assessment of the vehicle. This includes the ability to reduce CO2 emissions by 43 percent through charging, and by 56 percent if charged using hydroelectricity. Read more in the press release below. Daimler is expanding its production capacity for lithium-ion batteries. The company is investing around 100 million euros in its subsidiary Deutsche ACCUmotive, who will provide batteries for the electric Smart Fortwo and Forfour, as well as various Mercedes-Benz models. By the end of the construction, Deutsche ACCUmotive will have quadrupled production and logistics space since 2011. Read more in the press release below. Honda has begun sales of its Grace hybrid sedan in Japan. The Grace is based on the Honda Fit and uses the automaker's Sport Hybrid i-DCD system. It comes in front- and four-wheel-drive versions and uses a seven-speed DCT with built-in motor. The Honda Grace starts at the equivalent of about $16,500. Read more in the press release below. Honda has begun operation of its wind farm in Brazil. The farm consists of nine wind turbines, expected to produce about 95,000 MWh of electricity per year, which is on par with Honda's consumption for automobile production in the country. Toyota has won the 2014 World Endurance Championship's Driver and Manufacturer categories with hybrid technology. Toyota celebrated the win after the final race in Sao Paolo, Brazil. Controlled Power Technologies and other groups are calling for an international 48-volt electrical standard for vehicles. The groups called for the standard at the International Conference Automotive 48 V Power Supply Systems, saying that the 48V standard for mild hybrids would help make the systems more affordable. This will make it easier for automakers to meet the more stringent CO2 standards anticipated in coming years along with the introduction of the World Light vehicles Test Procedures. Green self-driving cars take center stage in Tokyo

Visions of cars that drive themselves without emitting a bit of pollution while entertaining passengers with online movies and social media are what's taking center stage at the Tokyo Motor Show. Japan, home to the world's top-selling automaker, has a younger generation disinterested in owning or driving cars. The show is about wooing them back. It's also about pushing an ambitious government-backed plan that paints Japan as a leader in automated driving technology. Reporters got a preview look at the exhibition Wednesday, ahead of its opening to the public Oct. 30. Nissan Motor Co. showed a concept vehicle loaded with laser scanners, a 360 degree camera setup, a radar and computer chips so the car can "think" to deliver autonomous driving. The Japanese automaker called it IDS, which stands for "intelligent driving system." Nissan, based in Yokohama, Japan, said it will offer some autonomous driving features by the end of next year in Japan. By 2018, it said vehicles with the technology will be able to conduct lane changes on highways. By 2020, such vehicles will be able to make their way through intersections on regular urban roads. Nissan officials said they were working hard to make the car smart enough to recognize the difference between a red traffic light and a tail light, learn how to turn on intersections where white lane indicators might be missing and anticipate from body language when a pedestrian might cross a street. Nissan's IDS vehicle is also electric, with a new battery that's more powerful than the one currently in the automaker's Leaf electric vehicle. Although production and sales plans were still undecided, it can travel a longer distance on a single charge and recharge more quickly. A major challenge for cars that drive themselves is winning social acceptance. They would have to share the roads with normal cars with drivers as well as with pedestrians, animals and unexpected objects. That's why some automakers at the show are packing the technology into what looks more like a golf cart or scooter than a car, such as Honda Motor Co.'s cubicle-like Wander Stand and Wander Walker scooter. Instead of trying to venture on freeways and other public roads, these are designed for controlled environments, restricted to shuttling people to pre-determined destinations. At a special section of the show, visitors can try out some of the so-called "smart mobility" devices such as Honda's seat on a single-wheel as well as small electric vehicles.

Recharge Wrap-up: Honda opens second CNG station, Fuels America's RFS ad for Obama

Biofuel group Fuels America is launching an ad campaign directed at President Obama regarding the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). It depicts a choice between listening to experts in favor of the RFS and its role in helping stem climate change and supposed lies told by the oil industry about renewable fuels. The seven figure ad campaign includes a TV spot and digital ads. National Corn Growers Association President Chip Bowling says "slashing the amount of clean, domestic renewable fuel in our motor fuel supply would dramatically increase pollution and carbon emissions, while strengthening the RFS and building on the progress of the past 10 years would help in our efforts to combat climate change." The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) sees big savings under the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA). The bill, which the ACEEE points out was signed by President Bush and implemented by Obama, is expected to save consumers more than $2 trillion, cut CO2 emissions by 17 billion metric tons and provide major cuts to oil and energy use through vehicle, equipment and lighting standards, efficiency programs and housing policies. Learn more from the ACEEE. Honda has opened a compressed natural gas fueling station at its campus in Troy, Ohio. It is Honda's second CNG station in North America, the other having opened at its Marysville, OH manufacturing facility in August. The stations are part of Honda's "green fleet" programs, and a larger goal of cutting the company's CO2 emissions by 50 percent by 2050. In addition to serving Honda and the trucks of its suppliers, the station is also open to public customers with CNG passenger vehicles. Read more from Honda. Connecticut has set aside funding for fleet EVs and workplace charging installation for state agencies and municipalities. The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) will reimburse up to $15,000 per electric vehicle and $10,000 per charger (with a maximum of six per recipient). "Municipalities and state agencies can demonstrate leadership and their commitment to market development of zero emission vehicles (ZEV) through the purchase of EVs and the installation of EV charging stations for their workplace," says DEEP.
