1986 Gmc K1500 4x4 Suburban With Lift on 2040-cars
Fredericksburg, Texas, United States
|
I bought this suburban in 2010, after having watched it sit idle in an apartment complex parking lot for 2 years. It has that classic 80's look that is so hard to find, especially in this shape. The young fella I bought it off of had pulled it out of a hayfield, where it had sat with blown heads for awhile already. He did a lot to get it back on the road including rebuilding those heads, installing the current lift and putting 33's on it.
Since I acquired it, I've had a rebuilt motor from a '93 put in it. IMO it needs a better rebuild; lifters tap a bit still. Initially it had a lot of blow by from the rebreather and still has a leak at the harmonic balancer. We put a 4 core full brass radiator in it. It has an Edelbrock carburetor and intake manifold. K&N filter. In the past year I've also had a new transmission installed. IMO the install is a little rough. I'm by no means a mechanic, more accurately a "diagnostician". I don't have much "how to fix it" knowledge, let alone tools, space and time to do it. I had hoped to park it, strip it and rebuild it at my leisure but because of issues with another vehicle, we put it on the road as a daily driver. It gets about 10mpg as it is now. Cold starts great. The differential has a new seal, fluid and the gears looked great. Transfer case runs perfect and shifts in and out easily. The front axel has self locking hubs. Dash cluster is completely shot. The lights work but none of the gauges, I'm pretty sure the copper circuit pad is too damaged and needs to be replaced. I haven't put the dash back together but still have the dash and the plastic cluster pieces. The steering column has been rebuilt as well. The doors need to be adjusted and re shimmed. 2 of the windows are cracked but not broken due to being hit by flying rocks from a weed whacker. All of the rubber door seals need to be replaced as well. Full front bench seat. Full middle seat and it still has the seat for the 3rd row. I have a spare tire for it. The vehicle has minimal rust. There is some on the right rear quarter panel (rusted behind the chrome trim, which has been removed) and a spot on a kick plate has a hole. The rust has come about from sitting in that hayfield in the Texas rain and doesn't appear to be major except maybe the hole. IMO could be fixed easily. There is no "road rust" like you would find in cars from up north, like in the wheel wells or undercarriage. In all honesty, it's in great shape body wise. It has the rear tailgate with the electric rear window. All of the windows, locks, etc are electric. The title is free and clear and in my possession. To the best of my knowledge the odometer has rolled and an accurate mileage cannot be given. There is approximately 25k miles since the rebuilt motor was installed and approximately 10k on the transmission. The right person can take this awesome suburban with really good bones and finish what I started. I would love to keep it but I am going from the Texas hill country to the dfw metroplex and that has forced me to make a hard choice. It's impractical for me to drive it in such a large city and I have nowhere to store it. So it's time to let someone else enjoy it and I'm absolutely certain that you will enjoy it. *please read carefully the following information* - As stated above, I am relocating. I need the transaction dealt with quickly, as outlined in the listing and the vehicle picked up ASAP. Delivery MAY be possible if you are within a reasonable distance and for an additional fee. - I have done my best to represent the condition of the vehicle as best I can but IT IS USED. It is sold AS IS. Please read carefully. Please ask questions. More pictures are available if requested. |

GM readying aluminum-body fullsize pickups
Wed, 19 Feb 2014Ford's extensive use of aluminum in its 2015 F-150 is a big deal. A really big deal. Big enough, in fact, that General Motors is reportedly changing its fullsize pickup strategy. According to The Wall Street Journal, The General has locked in partnerships with Alcoa Inc. and Novelis Inc. - companies that will supply aluminum for the next-generation Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks.
"Ford's introduction of the 2015 F-150 pickup truck was a game changer, and it's the first, not the last, conversion of this type," Novelis spokesperson Charles Belbin told the Journal. The switch to aluminum has allowed Ford to shave roughly 700 pounds off its fullsize truck's curb weight. And while official mileage ratings have not been announced, the weight loss should go a long way for improving efficiency, especially when combined other efficiency-minded improvements including better aerodynamics and new, turbocharged V6 engines.
Of course, aluminum-bodied cars are nothing new. But extensive use of aluminum in a major, best-selling product like the Ford F-150 is expected to kick off widespread use of this weight-saving material as availability rises and cost decreases. The WSJ reports that GM had originally explored the idea of moving to aluminum pickups back in 2008, but abandoned the idea due to cost concerns amid economic woes.
GMC recalls 740,000 Terrains to address headlight issue
Tue, Mar 22 2022GM is recalling 740,581 of its 2010-2017 GMC Terrains to address an issue with their headlight lenses that allow intense beams of light to escape at certain angles. GM had petitioned the government for an exemption because the errant photons aren't being cast directly at oncoming drivers, but after a review, NHTSA denied the request, leaving the ball in GM's court. After taking time to "review NHTSA's decision and explore potential next steps," GM relented and announced a recall campaign. The Terrain's headlight design allows a narrow sliver of low-beam light to reflect off the inner surface of the high beam reflector, GM's defect report says. The reflections depart the lens at angles that don't make them directly hazardous to oncoming drivers, which is why GM petitioned for an exemption. However GM says the bright spots can cause glare or just be inherently distracting, either of which can cause problems on the road. Per NHTSA, these slivers are four times brighter than allowed for low-beam headlights. If you own a last-generation GMC Terrain, expect to start receiving notices about this recall in mid- to late April, however the company has not yet said exactly how the problem will be remedied. Current Terrain owners can rest easy, as 2018 and newer models have a completely different headlight assembly. Recalls GMC Ownership Safety Crossover SUV
Best Large SUVs of 2024
Tue, Dec 19 2023When it comes down to large SUVs, there's more to consider than price and just how large it is. First, it comes down to what's underneath the skin. Some are built on a truck-like body-on-frame chassis — this would be the traditional, literal definition of an "SUV." Others use car-like, unibody construction, which would make them a crossover. What really matters, though, is how you use them. For most American families, a large three-row crossover is going to be your best bet. They have loads of passenger and cargo space, and deliver superior fuel economy, handling and ride quality than those big traditional SUVs. They're cheaper, too. On the other hand, those traditional large SUVs like the Chevy Tahoe and Ford Expedition are better-suited for more heavy-duty tasks like towing. Most now have bigger third rows than big crossovers, while extended-length versions like the Chevy Suburban have way more cargo capacity behind their third rows than everything but an airport shuttle. As for luxury large SUVs, they fall into those same two categories as well, with American choices mostly being truck-based. The pros and cons of choosing one over another are similar. Below, you will find our list of the best large SUVs broken down into three categories: large family crossover, large traditional SUV and large luxury SUVs, which comprise both construction types. Best Large Family Crossovers | Best Large Traditional SUVs | Best Large Luxury SUVs Best Large Family Crossovers 2024 Honda Pilot Why it stands out: Exceptional storage and cargo space; unique second-row functionality; refined ride; versatile and capable TrailSport; advanced AWDCould be better: Subpar acceleration with lackadaisical transmission and engine response; so-so driver assistance tech Read our full 2024 Honda Pilot Review The Honda Pilot was completely redesigned for 2023. It maintains its predecessor's family-friendly packaging and overall focus, but it has injected a welcome sense of style (especially in the TrailSport pictured above) that makes it stand out much better from the big crossover crowd. The Pilot's restrained adornment and classic proportions are refreshing compared to the increasingly busy Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade and Subaru Ascent. Let's talk about practicality, though, which is ultimately the Pilot's best attribute.
