Road & Track samples rare 1995 Ford Mustang Cobra R
Sat, Jun 6 2015The modern performance variant of the Ford Mustang enjoys a long, illustrious history. While well-known examples like the Boss 302, Shelby GT350, and Shelby GT500 get all the attention, the modern versions of these cars may not have been possible had it not been for the three generations of the Cobra R, sold in 1993, 1995, and 2000. Limited to just 250 examples, the second-generation model wasn't as rare as the Fox-body Cobra R that preceded it, but they were still pricey and difficult to acquire. Customers were required to hold a competition license in order to take delivery, and prices were roughly equivalent to $59,000 in today's money. As Road & Track tells it, neither of those facts were a handicap – Ford sold its entire roster of 1995 Cobra Rs in just five days. RT's Jack Baruth managed to score a drive in an extremely low-mileage example of this now-vintage track star. He delivers an interesting look into the way a performance car from two decades ago behaves in today's world, and finds that despite its age, the 1995 Cobra R is still "a true sweetheart." Ford recalls select Explorer, E-Series vans
Tue, 21 Jan 2014Just a few days ago we brought you news that Ford had issued a recall on 28,000 units of the Edge crossover for problems related to the fuel line. But now the Blue Oval has issued recall notices on two more of its larger vehicles.
The first relates to the Explorer, 395 examples of which from the 2011 and 2012 model years were found to have problems with their steering systems if they underwent service after September 1, 2013. An apparent software glitch could lock the steering gear, preventing the driver from steering the vehicle and thereby increasing the risk of a crash. As a result, Ford dealers are being instructed to check their records to identify the problematic vehicles and bring them in to have the steering gear replaced. The second problem revolves around E-Series vans that may develop bubbles in their windshields under hot temperatures. The decrease in visibility through the problematic windshield could - you guessed it - "increase the risk of a crash." As a result, Ford is calling in 4,532 units of the E-150, E-250, E-350 and E-450 vans built in the relatively short window between May 12 and May 26, 2011. New European charging network will offer speeds up to 350 kW
Tue, Nov 29 2016It's about to get easier to fast-charge your electric vehicle across Europe thanks to four major automakers working together in a new joint venture. BMW, Daimler (Mercedes-Benz), Ford, and the VW Group (Audi and Porsche) have all signed a Memorandum of Understanding to install about 400 DC fast charging sites in Europe. As you may know, there are different types of fast chargers, but the ones that this group is talking about installing will be able to charge an EV in much less time than other stations. That's because these chargers will offer power levels of "up to 350 kW." Compare that to what's generally considered the current gold standard, the Tesla Superchargers, which have rates of up to 145 kW and a statement not that long ago from a Ford exec that suggested that 150 kW chargers would be the new normal. Of course, the Tesla chargers use the company's proprietary connector and the new network the JV is setting up will use the CCS standard. The first new stations will go up in 2017 and those 400 sites are just the beginning. A joint statement by the JV says that EV drivers will "have access to thousands of high-powered charging points" by 2020 along highways and main roads. "The charging experience is expected to evolve to be as convenient as refueling at conventional gas stations," the companies said. While not every electric vehicle will be able to take advantage of the 350 kW charging rate, the companies involved would be silly to build the infrastructure without vehicles that can handle that kind of energy flow. The JV says it would welcome participation from other automakers and will cooperate with interested regional partners.
