Up for auction is a 1964 Ford Fairlane 500 2 Dr Hardtop.  This vehicle is an all-original, (V8, AT, Power Steering) California car that was last purchased in mid-2003 to serve as the "in-house" restoration project for the So Cal-based, Legendary Ford Magazine.  It was originally built and assembled at the San Jose plant in December of 1964 with a Los Angeles DSO (71).  It has spent the last 10 years in various indoor shops and garages with very little exposure to the outside elements.  Over the years, many improvements have been made on the car in both the performance and restoration areas.  However, the project is not complete and will require additional work.  It is fully assembled except for the front end suspension, power steering, front brakes and parts of the interior.  The front end currently sits on a custom-made, boxed-tubing frame with 6.00" polyurethane, swivel casters with locking brakes for convenient mobility.  It is easily maneuverable onto a trailer (with a winch) or around the garage.  I have managed this single-handedly plenty of times without assistance or added equipment.  The car is currently not running, but it is mechanically in tact (minus water pump and battery).  It ran and drove when it was last garaged for the front end suspension and brake rebuild.

The front suspension of the Fairlane is stock, but it has undergone a complete restoration.  The brake and suspension components (and hardware) have all been removed, media-blasted, and powdercoated in a factory-correct Eastwood Satin Black or Bare Metal finish.  The upper and lower control arms, steering knuckles, front sway bar and brackets, front sway bar mounting hardware, strut rods and brackets, shock absorber cradles, shock tower mounting brackets, and shock tower braces have all received the complete treatment.  The sway bar bushings, strut rod bushings and ball joints (minus 1 lower) are new and included, as well.  The stock, front drum brake assemblies have been removed to be replaced by a complete Stainless Steel Brake Corp. front disc brake kit.  The kit includes SSBC 11.00" vented and slotted rotors (w/powdercoated hubs and backing plates), steering knuckle mounting brackets, 4-piston calipers (w/stainless pistons and lines), inner and outer wheel bearings, brake pads, front-to-rear distribution block and front brake hoses.  The entire kit is new and has only seen approximately 30 miles of road use.  The supplied front coil springs and shock absorbers are also new and ready to install.  The power steering rack and gear box are the factory units, but contain new inner and outer tie rod assemblies and adjusting sleeves.  The rear, leaf-spring suspension and rear drum brakes of the car are completely stock and untouched.

The car retains the original, numbers-matching drivetrain in the engine (260 2 bbl. V8), transmission (Ford-O-Matic 2 speed, column-shift AT) and rear-end assembly (8.00" 2.80:1 rear axle).  These are all completely stock and are still in running condition.  However, the engine is in need of a battery, water pump and new exhaust and would likely benefit from a mild rebuild.  However, the motor still turns over by hand with ease. Everything appears to be factory-correct and original (carb, distributor, air cleaner, etc.).   The transmission shifts as intended, but it is presently missing the shift linkage rod from the streering column to the transmission case.  Temporarily, it can be shifted manually (at the transmission).  The fuel tank, fuel tank straps, fuel neck and mounting hardware have been removed from the vehicle, thoroughly stripped and powdercoated in Eastwood's Bare Metal finish.  The inside of the tank is clean and free of any corrosion.

The Fairlane is equipped with a factory split-bench 2-tone vinyl interior (Trim code 62 - Med and Light Blue Metallic).  The front and rear seat upholstery is original to the car, but is showing signs of age and wear (front bench is torn in several places).  The carpet, door panels, headliner and rear seat shelf will need to be purchased separately and added to the interior to make it complete.  The dash and speedo cluster are original to the car, but the RH radio and heater control bezel is missing.  The opening has been enlarged to accept a non-factory radio, although the stock AM radio should still fit and mount into the panel with the bezel installed.  The stock AM radio, glove box, accelerator pedal, kick panels, sun visors, door and window crank handles, front and rear armrests w/ashtrays and door sill plates are all included with the vehicle.

The body is a 2 Dr Hardtop (65A) with original Guardsman Blue (Paint code F 1622 - Med Blue Metallic) paint.  The large majority of the sheet metal, body/door glass and hard trim are in great condition and show only natural signs of wear and age.  The RH quarter panel moulding is not installed, but is included and damage-free.  The hood and the tops of the fenders are showing well-worn paint, but this is solely surface discoloration with no visible corrosion or pitting.  The panels are smooth to the touch and will easily clean-up with light sanding for re-painting.  There are a few other similar, yet much smaller spots around the body that have already been sanded and sealed with Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator (matte black in photos) for protection until the bodywork is performed.  The front portion of the RH quarter panel is the only section that needs actual bodywork.  Prior to LFM's purchase of the Fairlane, it had been hit in this area and underwent a minor, re-shaping attempt of the sheet metal.  The correct repair can easily be made by any experienced body-man. I have actually acquired a clean and complete, full-length RH quarter section (front of wheel-well to inner door jam) for this purpose.  The front floor pans, rear pans and underseat section are all solid and have been stripped, treated and sealed with POR-15 products and paints.  The trunk pans show a little softness in the center with a couple of very small areas showing seperated metal.  A light, fiberglass patching and sealing would easily fix the problem.  The remainder of the body, underbody and frame are all fairly solid, straight and rust-free.  I have duplicate front grill and headlight bezel assemblies, factory headlamps, taillight housings and a few other misc. trim pieces that will be included with the car.

This is a great project with tons of potential.  The car is clean, original and solid.  Please feel free to ask any questions.  I have more detailed pictures of the vehicle to send if you are interested.  Keep in mind, the car will DEFINITELY need to be loaded onto a flatbed carrier with the use of a winch or similar device.  The car is not under power and there are no provisions for braking or steering.  This will be the sole responsibility of the buyer and carrier.  Thanks for looking and GOOD LUCK!!!

Auto critic calls out Corvette, Mustang and Cherokee faithful

Mon, 26 Aug 2013

Most automotive purists fear change, but not without reason. Change, after all, did kill big-block V8s, along with most station wagons and manual transmissions. But change has also brought with it far more performance, safety and fuel economy - not to mention ridding the world of shag carpet interiors, bias-ply tires and those horrible motorized seatbelts of the early '90s.
By this time next year, the Chevy Corvette, Jeep Cherokee and next-generation Ford Mustang will all be on sale and will all, in some way, have angered or offended purists. To those critics, Mark Phelan of the Detroit Free Press is preemptively telling them to stop complaining - at least until they've all been driven. From the Corvette's square taillights and the Cherokee's radical nose to whatever pony car purists will harp on the 2015 Mustang for, Phelan's column points out the positives of automotive evolution and the negatives of staying the course for too long. That's fair enough, but do you think Phelan is on point, or all wet? Head on over to the Detroit Free Press to read his words, then have your say in Comments.

2022 GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate vs. 2022 Ram 1500 Limited Longhorn vs. Ford F-150 Limited | Luxury truck interior face-off

Fri, Oct 22 2021

GMC's new uber-expensive 2022 Sierra Denali Ultimate is the latest luxury truck to nudge toward six-figure territory. With demand for upmarket half-tons surging, GMC's otherwise-solid pickup found itself in desperate need of an interior remodel. For 2022, we're getting just that, and it appears ready to take the fight to the segment's best, including the 2022 Ram 1500 Limited and 2022 Ford F-150 Limited. Here's the new Denali Ultimate interior in all of its full-grain, open-pore glory. 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate vs. 2021 GMC Denali  Not only did the material quality and styling both improve greatly, but the new truck also gets a completely different shifter setup (truck buyers don't like column shifters anymore, apparently). It would actually be difficult to overstate the quality of the upgrade here; the photos really speak for themselves. It's also worth noting that in addition to looking significantly more upscale than the model it's succeeding, the new Denali interior also differs a bit more from its Chevy counterpart than its predecessor did. Here's the new Silverado High Country for reference: While some elements do carry over, the entire dash design is different, down to the positioning of the heating and cooling vents. While the main HVAC controls are essentially carried over, note that they're pretty much the only ones. Even the horizontal bar of switches running along the center stack is positioned differently between the two. Yep. This is a pretty big upgrade over the 2021 cabin, and clearly the range-topper in GM's truck hierarchy. But what of the competition? 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate vs. 2022 Ram Limited Longhorn Southfork This one's tough. We're going to have to spend time in them back to back, but the Ram Limited, with its various anniversary editions and other special permutations, is certainly the interior to beat. To our eyes, the Sierra's more horizontal layout is a bit more modern and perhaps luxurious-looking than the more upright cabin treatment of the Ram, but it's tough to say for certain from photos. Both the Denali Ultimate and Ram Limited carry their upscale feel into their back benches too, which is something we can't say quite as confidently about our next contestant.  2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate vs. 2021 Ford F-150 Limited The Ford F-150 Limited holds its own, but it's probably the least photogenic of the models we've looked at here, at least apart from the outgoing Denali.

Plethora of 2015 Ford F-150 customs runs the gamut at SEMA

Wed, 05 Nov 2014

Of Ford's customized trucks, two feature the name of famous Ford racers.
Of all the OEMs making appearances at the 2014 SEMA show, Ford owns arguably the most significant group of vehicles, thanks to its new 2015 F-150 and Mustang. While you can look for our Mustang coverage soon, we've managed to sneak out and get snaps of some of a few of the F-150s on display at the company's sprawling, 20,000-square-foot display (look for even more aftermarket F-150 goodness in the coming days).
