Trump takes potshots at Ford in Flint
Wed, Aug 12 2015Doubling down on his general dislike of everything south of the Rio Grande, Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump took aim at local favorite Ford during his first campaign visit to Michigan yesterday. "Ford is building a $2.5 billion plant in Mexico," Trump told a standing-room-only crowd in Birch Run, MI, yesterday evening. "I'll actually give them a good idea. Why don't we just let the illegals drive the cars and trucks right into our country?" This is not the first time real estate mogul turned reality TV star has whined about Ford's Mexican factory plans. Previously, he promised that if he were elected, he'd levy a 35-percent tax against Mexican-built Fords. Then, as he has here, Trump failed to address other automakers selling Mexican-built vehicles in the US, including Detroit-based General Motors as well as foreign brands like Volkswagen, Nissan, and Toyota. "I would say, the deal is not going to be approved, I won't allow it. I want that plant in the United States, preferably here," Trump said, with Bloomberg reporting his comments were meant with chants of "USA." Ford announced the $2.5-billion Mexican investment in April, saying it'd build two factories to produce transmissions and engines. In response to Trump's criticism of the deal, the Dearborn-based automaker was quick to point out that it hasn't exactly been stingy about building its business here in the US. "We are committed to leveraging our global manufacturing footprint and will continue to invest where it makes the best sense for our business," Ford spokesman Karl Henkel told Bloomberg. "We are proud that we have invested $6.2 billion in our US plants since 2011 and hired nearly 25,000 US employees." Related Video:
Next Ford F-150 delayed for aluminum body panel issues?
Wed, 11 Dec 2013The timetable for next-generation Ford F-150 may be in trouble if a report from The Truth About Cars is true. The next F-150 is slated to make extensive use of weight-saving aluminum in its body, but the aluminum alloy provided by suppliers hasn't met Ford's requirements in the earliest phases of pre-production, according to the report.
The F-150 represents a huge portion of Ford's profits and is the best-selling truck in the US, even in the face of increased pressure from cross-town rivals General Motors and Ram. While the current truck is treading water against its competition, we'd be lying if we said the F-150 weren't growing quite long in the tooth.
If production of the next-generation of the Ford cash cow, said to be based on the Atlas Concept from the 2013 Detroit Auto Show (pictured above), is delayed, it could be bad for Ford. Production at Ford's Dearborn Truck Plant is already set to be delayed six to ten weeks, missing an internal on-sale deadline of Memorial Day.
Autoblog Minute: New car customer satisfaction down according to latest ACSI report
Wed, Sep 9 2015Customers have spoken and automobile satisfaction is down in 2015. Autoblog's Chris McGraw reports on this edition of Autoblog Minute. Show full video transcript text [00:00:00] Customers have spoken and automobile satisfaction is down in 2015. I'm Chris McGraw and this is your Autoblog Minute. The American Customer Satisfaction Index or ACSI released its updated numbers and according to the survey, new car buyer satisfaction is down for the third straight year. According to an ACSI press release, customer satisfaction with new automobiles has fallen 3.7 percent, to 79 on its 100-point scale. The ACSI report is based on over 4,100 customer surveys collected in the second quarter of 2015 Sitting at the top of the industry in customer satisfaction is Toyota's Lexus brand with a score of 84. Which was good enough to dethrone Mercedes-Benz, which fell 3% to a score of 83. Of the Big Three, Ford was the only domestic automaker to maintain overall customer satisfaction with its score of 81. General Motors slipped 3% to 79 and Fiat Chrysler had a 5% drop, registering a score of 75 out the possible 100. What's driving this trend of customer dissatisfaction? ASCI points to the rise in recalls and car prices. Where do you land on customer satisfaction spectrum? Sound off in the comments with your thoughts on the current state of car ownership and brand quality. For Autoblog, I'm Chris McGraw.
