I bought this truck in 2010 with 68,000 miles on it after searching for the right Excursion for nearly a year. I
drove it about a year and then the common “6.0 Problems” started to developed. Took the entire body off and
started a major rebuild/upgrade to make this truck the monster it is today. This truck gets looks and “thumbs
up” everywhere it goes.
The first thing addressed was the motor issues that plague these trucks. It was a no-brainer to put a Sinister
Diesel Complete 6.0 Solution on it to fix the common problems. This kit deletes the EGR, adds ARP head studs, puts
in updated oil coolers, replaces the o-rings, installed the new up-pipe, and comes with new Ford factory gaskets.
I had the heads machined while it was apart to make sure everything would go back together without any issues, put
in new Ford factory injectors, replaced every seal I could, and then I slapped a PowerMax turbo on it along with
some custom tunes from Eric at Innovative. This truck is only on the street tune and it is ridiculously fast!
Unfortunately, lifted Excursions don’t ride that great since they have leaf spring suspension all the way around.
In fact, this truck rode like a covered wagon when I first had a leaf spring lift on it, so I swapped in a custom
Full Traction Coil-over conversion with a soft-ride rear leaf pack to give it 8” of lift. The difference in ride
is incredible; well worth the $9,000 price. I also added a Red-Head steering box and backed it up with a hydraulic
assist ram to make the steering very precise. I cruise this truck at 85 MPH with one finger on the wheel with
confidence.
The interior is in great shape (driver’s seat and arm rest shows wear), and the stereo in this thing is
ridiculous. As you can see from the pics there are TVs in all the head rests, the Kenwood head unit plays the
dvds, and there are wireless headphones for the passengers. The sound from the Hertz/Memphis Audio/Kicker/Alpine
system is not only realistic and clear, but it also puts out a tremendous amount of volume. It’ll make you
giggle like an idiot when you crank it up!
Here is a list of the upgrades I’ve made:
Drivetrain/Suspension
8” Full Traction Coil-over conversion with King Remote reservoir shocks.
Red-head steering box with hydraulic assist ram steering.
Shift solenoid in the trans for better shifting.
4.56 Gears with ARB air lockers front AND rear. This truck is right in its power band even with 38” tires.
Engine
Sinister Diesel Complete 6.0 solution including EGR delete
ARP head studs.
Machined heads.
New Ford factory injectors.
Power Max Turbo.
Sinister Diesel coolant filter.
Bulletproof Diesel FICM.
AFE intake and MBRP exhaust.
Replaced pretty much every o-ring and seal we could on the interior of the engine.
New starter 10,000 miles ago.
Just replaced the alternator and the battery cables (driver and passenger) about 1,000 miles ago.
New Interstate Batteries (10/15).
Wheels/Tires/Aesthetics
38 x 15.50 r 20 Mickey Thompson MTZ tires (less than 4,000 miles on them).
20 x 10 BMF Novakane 8 wheels.
Fab Fours front AND rear bumpers.
Hella Ralleye 4000 lights on the front bumper.
IPF back up lights in the rear bumper.
Smittybilt 10K winch.
Amp Research steps.
Limo Tint all the way around.
3M clear bra on the front and the lower panels to keep rocks from chipping the paint (works great!).
Klein “Master Blaster” Train Horns (So loud they hurt!).
Viair Air Compressor kit with reserve tank for filling up tires and running air tools.
Interior
Huge stereo with Hertz Mille front stage ($1,400/pair), Memphis Audio rear fill, 6 Kicker solo-baric 8” subs,
3 Alpine amps, TVs in all the seats, and a Kenwood Navigation unit for the head unit. (This system was roughly
$17,000 installed).
Husky floor mats front, middle, and cargo area.
Edge CTS monitor for monitoring engine vitals and reading any DTCs.
***There are a couple of blemishes that I would like to point out. The windshield has a long crack in it along the
bottom from a rock chip. I've never replaced it because I like the dark "eyebrow" tint this windshield has on it
and I didn't want to go to the hassle of replacing it. The driver’s seat and armrest show wear. The edge of the
driver’s door has a couple of nicks in the paint, but overall this thing is in excellent shape.
Sadly they don’t make these beasts anymore, and finding examples of them in good shape is getting more and more
difficult. Good ones are still holding their value and fetching premiums. I’ve really enjoyed this truck, and I
know the next owner will love it as much as I have. Well over $80,000 invested, and it runs and drives great.
I’ve already fixed the problem areas for you, so now you just get to enjoy it!

Shelby GT350 stars in 2015 Monterey Motorsports Reunion

Sun, Aug 16 2015

Scoping out classic racing machinery sitting at Monterey Car Week is a lovely experience. We're always stoked to see some of these priceless pieces of metal wherever we can, up close and personal. But we all know that where they really belong is on the racetrack. That's where the Monterey Motorsports Reunion comes in, and this year's event was a thrilling spectacle. Sponsored as always by Rolex and held at the legendary Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, this year's reunion brought together a wide array of tantalizing machinery from the annals of racing history. There were Can-Am racers – some of the fastest and most powerful competition equipment ever devised – of every color, and more racing Porsches than you could shake a titanium connecting rod at. But the biggest part of the spectacle was the Shelby GT350. That most venerable of classic Mustangs served as the featured marque this year as it celebrated its 50th anniversary. Auspicious timing, considering that Ford has now brought it back. But fans of the original will want to check out the dozens of snake-bitten pony cars doing their thing on one of America's finest racing circuits. Check out the GT350s, captured through the lens of our own master shutterbug, Drew Phillips, in the gallery above, and the full array of reunited vintage racers in the second gallery below the video.

Why Ford's Alan Mulally would be right for Microsoft, or any company

Thu, 03 Oct 2013

That Mulally was seriously being considered says a great deal about Microsoft and Mulally.
It appears that the chatter about Ford CEO Alan Mulally possibly leaving early to take over as CEO of Microsoft is losing air pretty fast. What's pretty interesting is that it got any traction in the first place.

Ford to update Sync, MyFord Touch software... again

Wed, 07 Aug 2013

Ford hasn't had the best luck with its MyFord Touch and Sync systems, as the finicky infotainment system has been subject to a critical whooping while customer issues have helped sink Ford's IQS scores. The automaker has made a concerted effort, though, to try and fix MyFord Touch. And while the results have been mixed, The Blue Oval is hoping its latest free update, set to go live next week, will make things better.
According to a report from The Detroit News, the new system promises streamlined voice commands with fewer levels between opening query and actual result. Ford is also addressing where certain options are selected on the touchscreen. Rather than working one of the four quadrants on the homescreen, users will be able to select anywhere within the quadrant to make adjustments.
While it might only be a band-aid for MFT's problems, the fact that Ford is still trying to improve it is a promising sign. It's going to take more than just this update to address the system's ills, though.
