1988 Ford Escort Evcort on 2040-cars

Soleq was a company that built electric vehicles from the early 1980's to the mid 1990's.
Their conversions were very technically advanced, and the owner of the company, a Mr. Shunjiro Ohba,
oversaw the design of all components from scratch. From what I know, Mr. Ohba had a PhD in
electrical engineering and completely designed the motor controller, DC-DC converter, charger,
heating, and all sub systems, as well as specifying the custom GE motor.
60 mile range. 40Kw max power output (400A @ nominal 108V). Powerful regenerative braking (220A @ nominal 108V). 600Watt 108V to 12V dc-dc converter. Current selectable charger up to 30A. 3Kw heating system that can be set to preheat/cool the cabin while plugged in. Air condition system. Separately excited motor controller. These specifications are still at the top of the class for converted DC electric vehicles. New Li-ion and Ni-mhi batteries are significantly eclipsing these specs, but only 20 years later. |

Ford doubling 1.0L EcoBoost engine production
Fri, 06 Sep 2013Ford's 1.0-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder engine hasn't been around that long, but it sounds like the engine is getting to be fairly popular in the automaker's global car lineup. The Detroit News is reporting that Ford has add a second shift that will allow its German engine plant to double daily output from 500 engines to 1,000.
The increased capacity is part of a plan to sell more than 300,000 vehicles a year with this engine in Europe by 2015. Europe is currently the only market where the smallest of the EcoBoost engines is offered (including in the Focus pictured above), but US-spec Fiesta models will be getting this mill for 2014.
Three-cylinder engines are expected to continue to grow in popularity in coming years with the report indicating that global production of these engines will double by 2018 to 9.8 million units. General Motors, BMW and Mitsubishi are all expected to introduce three-cylinder engines in the near term, as well.

Ford blamed in drug mule lawsuit
Tue, 30 Jul 2013If a college student is caught smuggling drugs across the border, one might think the kid got what was coming to him. But when a Mexican student at the University of Texas in El Paso was caught by Border Patrol agents with duffel bags filled with marijuana in his trunk, the man used a classic excuse: He claimed they weren't his.
While a claim like that is almost unbelievable, Ricardo Magallanes, the student, is now suing Ford for handling its vehicles' key codes negligently enough to allow drug smugglers to break into his Ford Focus and stash the drugs, The Daily Caller reports. The twist here is that four other people who lived in Juarez and worked in El Paso were involved in the same type of scheme - allegedly unwittingly, just like Magallanes - and all the cars were Fords except one model from General Motors. FBI agents also found an employee at a Dallas Ford dealership that had accessed the key codes to all four of the cannabis-stuffed Fords.
While we all may not own Fords, the case still causes us slight paranoia. We'll definitely be checking our trunks before we cross any more international borders.
