Up for sale is my 1999 Ford Windstar SE minivan. This is the upgraded model with two sliding doors, leather interior, middle captains chairs, and virtually every other factory option included. I've paid for quite a few maintenance items over the last 12 months so you won't have to. These include: new battery, all new front suspension assemblies, and I even had Ford completely replace/upgrade the sub frame which was a free recall on this year/model so you even get a brand new sub frame installed (done). Despite the fairly high mileage, this van starts every day, every time, and runs strong. With the repair listed below completed, this van is likely to run for many more miles and if you're looking for a great deal on a van with an awesome interior/options package, you won't find one nicer than this.

Needed Repair:
The only item that needs repair right now is what my mechanic tells me is the torch converter within the transmission. Despite the actual part not being all that expensive he says the shop that replaces/repairs the transmission will have to take it all apart which is fairly time consuming. I've received one quote for about $1600 for a completely rebuilt transmission to be installed but I'd be willing to be that you could get it done cheaper if you had a transmission shop only replace the torch converter. However, my mechanic recommends that if the cost is close to just go ahead and get a new (rebuilt) trans. so you'll essentially have a new van transmission-wise. I could likely get $3000 for this van if it had no issues but I want to be upfront about this needed repair and it has been built into the price.

Condition:
This van is the standard Ford light green/gray color. There are a few small misc scuffs on the exterior but nothing more than you'd expect of a vehicle this age. There is a portion of the lower panels near the rear tires that is starting to rust which appears to be completely normal of a Windstar this age as I've seen many around town with similar wear & tear in this pattern. The van has the original/factory V6 engine it in with 162700 miles.  There is one small issue that I wanted to describe though it doesn't impact anything:  the passenger side mirror housing must have been bumped by a pedestrian somewhere along the line because the housing jiggles a bit but the power mirror works fine and there is nothing wrong with the mirror itself.  Again, not a big deal but I want to be perfectly clear with any/all issues with parts.

Overall, this is a great-running van and I'm only selling it because I finally bought a new vehicle, I'm moving out of state for a new job, and I no longer have a need for this van. I've invested over $1000 in upkeep and upgrades to buy new parts and keep the van in good shape (most of that cost was replacing the entire front suspension, springs, housing assembly, etc. I'm located in Traverse City and I own the vehicle free&clear.

Retro Wrong: MotorWeek shares first unaired pilot episode

Fri, Apr 17 2015

MotorWeek is an automotive institution in the United States. We all have to get our start somewhere though, and for the latest entry in the Retro Review series, the show is releasing its unaired pilot for the first time. Even today, the program isn't necessarily the most exciting thing on TV, but the modern incarnation looks like Top Gear compared to this original, very monotone attempt. The cars on display are more interesting from a historical aspect than actually being behind the wheel. MotorWeek puts the Chevrolet Citation and Ford Fairmont head to head. If you want to see progress in the auto industry, look here. The Fairmont manages a rousing 85 horsepower from a 3.3-liter inline six, and the Citation does only a little better with a 115-hp, 2.8-liter V6. The other highlight comes at the end when John Davis talks about the cars of the future. These include the upcoming introduction of the Ford Escort in the US and the mention of a possible gasoline-electric hybrid from General Motors. Given this pilot, it's amazing MotorWeek ever got the green light. However, if you're a fan of auto history, seeing the news from the past is always fascinating. Ford's Troller introduces even more rugged T4 SUVs in Sao Paulo

Mon, 27 Oct 2014

The Bronco may be long gone from Ford dealerships back home, but down in Brazil its spirit lives on in the Troller brand. Founded independently in 1995, Ford do Brasil took over Troller in 2007 and has been teasing us with its rough-and-tumble SUVs ever since. So with the Sao Paulo Motor Show coming up, Troller has revealed this special version of the T4.
Looking even more rugged than the existing three-door sport-ute, this special T4 packs a snorkel, winch, upgraded bumpers and knobbier tires. We're not sure what to make of the "sophisticated" brown and tan paint job, but send it north and the Jeep Wrangler would have a new challenger on its hands... especially since the Toyota FJ Cruiser was discontinued.
Alongside the version seen here, Troller will also exhibit another T4 outfitted for rescue workers. Scope out initial details of both in the press release below, enclosed in both its original Portuguese and auto-translated into English.

Ford F-450 claims best-in-class towing, company abandons practice of removing items to boost payload number

Tue, 02 Sep 2014

The ongoing heavy-duty truck battle between Ford and Ram is showing no signs of slowing down. The Blue Oval is trying to remove at least one point of contention between the two brands by testing its 2015 F-450 Super Duty using the Society of Automotive Engineers J2807 towing standard, which Ram also uses. In the new evaluation, the F-450 is rated at a max towing capacity of 31,200 pounds. That's an identical amount as under Ford's own, previous test.
"We leave no doubt with customers that the F-450 pickup truck has best-in-class towing of 31,200 pounds - whether tested using our own internal towing standards or SAE J2807," said Raj Nair, Ford group vice president for Global Product Development, in the company's release.
At the same time, Ford is also changing how it calculates the F-450's payload. Instead of using its minimum curb weight as before, the brand is now using the truck's base curb weight. The revision lowers the pickup's rating to 5,300 pounds, compared to 5,450 pounds previously. The company said in its announcement that the reason for this is "aligning its payload rating practices with other manufacturers to make it easier for customers to compare vehicles." General Motors made a similar switch for its pickups in August.
