  Car is in good condition overall.  Paint is glossy but has a few scratches and sags.  Glass and convertible soft top are good.  Car is solid and runs well.  312 cubic inch y-block with four-barrel carburetor produces 218 hp in stock form.  Three speed manual transmission shifts properly and electric overdrive unit functions as it should. First gear is not synchronized.  The car must be brought to a complete stop before shifting into first.  This is not a problem driving the car, as the engine is a torque monster and accelerates from idle in second gear smoothly.  Car is equipped with Coker Classic wide-whitewall radials ($615.36, May '05).  Less than 1,000 miles on them and no sign of dry rot.  15" chrome wire wheels with Thunderbird lettering and logo on spinners (we can't find that receipt, but believe the purchase price for four wheels was around $1,200).  Bias-ply tires and factory steel wheels and full wheel covers included in sale.  Trim plate on firewall shows: 40A E XA 18EL1824
  Parts replaced or repaired since 2001 purchase, in addition to remedial body work;
water pump, thermostat, battery, cleaned fuel tank, wiring harness (main dash, across front, heater blower), heater temperature valve, blower motor, transmission overhaul (gasket set, pinion seal, transmission bearings and oil seals), clutch disk and pressure plate, radiator and radiator cradle, correct mechanical fuel pump, front springs and shocks, a-frame bushings, and much more.  All receipts since 1994 included, plus factory shop manual and various catalogs.
  Car is well sorted out, has been well cared for, and has had serious mechanical and cosmetic upgrades over the past 12 years while accumulating less than 1,500 additional  miles. 50,012.8 currently showing on odometer.  Took her out for her first spin this Spring and she's running just fine.  We drive the car only enough to keep everything working properly and to attend a few very local shows.
  We have over $38,000 in the car to date.  Reserve is considerably lower.  Car is available for inspection and test drive prior to auction end.

Ford wants to double hybrid offerings by 2020

Wed, Jan 15 2014

The Blue Oval is looking for folks on the other side of this Big Old Sphere to get on board with its hybrid offerings. Ford executive Raj Nair, speaking at the Detroit Auto Show this week, said the US automaker wants to double the number of hybrids models it offers by the end of the decade, Reuters reports. Details of what that actually means is anyone's guess, as it was unclear how many of those models would be in the US and how many would be overseas. That said, Nair did say that prospective customers in regions such as China and Europe would drive the expansion of offerings. Ford got off to a great start in the US last year on its hybrid sales, but then tailed off towards the end of 2013. Ford more than doubled its green-car sales in 2013 to almost 88,000 units. In that number were more than 37,000 Fusion Hybrids and more than 28,000 C-Max Hybrids sold domestically. The company also sold almost 7,500 Lincoln MKZ Hybrids. Ford's green-car totals for 2013 were up fivefold at the mid-year point, hinting that Ford's hybrid sales plateaued, at least temporarily, in recent months.

Big electric trucks won't save the planet, says the NYT

Tue, Feb 21 2023

When The New York Times decides that an issue is an issue, be prepared to read about it at length. Rarely will a week passes these days when the esteemed news organization doesn’t examine the realities, myths and alleged benefits and drawbacks of electric vehicles, and even The Atlantic joins in sometimes. That revolution, marked by changes in manufacturing, consumer habits and social “consciousness,” may in fact be upon us. Or it may not. Nonetheless, the newspaper appears committed to presenting to the public these pros and cons. In this recently published article titled, “Just How Good for the Planet Is That Big Electric Pickup Truck?”—wow, thatÂ’s a mouthful — the Times focuses on the “bigness” of the current and pending crop of EVs, and how that impacts or will impact the environment and road safety. This is not what news organizations these days are fond of calling “breaking news.” In October, we pointed to an essay in The Atlantic that covered pretty much the same ground, and focused on the Hummer as one particular villain, In the paper and online on Feb. 18, the Times' Elana Shao observes how “swapping a gas pickup truck for a similar electric one can produce significant emissions savings.” She goes on: “Take the Ford F-150 pickup truck compared with the electric F-150 Lightning. The electric versions are responsible for up to 50 percent less greenhouse gas emissions per mile.” But she right away flips the argument, noting the heavier electric pickup trucks “often require bigger batteries and more electricity to charge, so they end up being responsible for more emissions than other smaller EVs. Taking into consideration the life cycle emissions per mile, they end up just as polluting as some smaller gas-burning cars.” Certainly, itÂ’s been drummed into our heads that electric cars donÂ’t run on air and water but on electricity that costs money, and that the public will be dealing with “the shift toward electric SUVs, pickup trucks and crossover vehicles, with some analysts estimating that SUVs, pickup trucks and vans could make up 78 percent of vehicle sales by 2025." No-brainer alert: Big vehicles cost more to charge. And then thereÂ’s the safety question, which was cogently addressed in the Atlantic story. Here Shao reiterates data documenting the increased risks of injuries and deaths caused by larger, heavier vehicles.

2020 Ford Escape, Lincoln Corsair ace crash tests, earn Top Safety Pick from IIHS

Fri, Nov 15 2019

The redesigned 2020 Ford Escape and its platform-mate, the 2020 Lincoln Corsair, have both just completed their bout of crash tests at the hands of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and while they did not emerge unscathed, they did come away with the agency's Top Safety Pick Award. One caveat: The rating only applies to the Escape equipped with the available LED headlights, which were deemed Acceptable. Similarly, the Corsair needs the available curve-adaptive LED headlights, also rated Acceptable, in order to achieve Top Safety Pick. The Escape's standard halogen headlights scored only a Marginal rating, while the Corsair's base LED headlights were deemed Poor due to glare. Those low headlight ratings knock the vehicles out of contention for Top Safety Pick. Had either vehicle offered headlights able to achieve a Good rating, that would have been enough to get them the agency's Top Safety Pick+ rating. Outside of their headlights, the 2020 Escape and Corsair acquitted themselves well. The Escape saw a big improvement in the difficult small-overlap front crash test, going from a Poor result in the previous generation to Good with the new one. The Corsair performed identically, and both achieved Good ratings in all six crash tests. The IIHS also tests automatic emergency-braking systems, and the standard and optional systems in the Escape and the Corsair both earned Superior ratings.
