In 1967 Carroll Shelby did what many had deemed impossible: he offered a fine American GT car at, while not a cheap
price, a price within reason. He called it the G.T.500 and starting with Ford’s Mustang, he transformed it into a
genuine, fun-loving corner carver, and all for around $5,500. It caused a stir on streets everywhere. A Santa Cruz
Sentinel review from July of 1967 found that never had they tested a vehicle that got as much attention as the
Shelby G.T.500. They wrote “Kids swarmed over it when it was parked. Teenagers and grown men constantly quizzed
us about the car’s performance. And best of all, the ladies suddenly found the driver attractive.’ Those
spotlight-stealing qualities have remained with the model, which in the last couple of decades has transcended to
legendary status all thanks to a variety of factors. It has the grunt of a proper muscle car, packing a 428ci V8,
the drop dead gorgeous looks of a head-turner that balances racecar function with street machine style and deep
ties and connection to legendary driver Carroll Shelby. Car and Driver reviewed on in February of 1967 and called
it an ‘adult sports car’ and ‘a grown-up sports car for smooth touring. No more wham-bam, thank-you-ma'am,
just a purring, well controlled tiger. Like Shelby says, "This is the first car I'm really proud of.”’ That’s
high praise from a man who knew a thing or two about building performance-oriented machines that looked cool and
went fast. Car and Driver came away from their tester impressed, ‘expecting a cataclysm on wheels, the automotive
equivalent of the end of the earth. We were pleasantly surprised to discover that the G.T.500 isn’t anything like
that.’ What they found was that it was pleasant with ‘all the viciousness gone out of the car’ but ‘without
any lessening of its animal vitality.’ It reacted with a light tough with confident braking. All in all, they
liked it – a lot.

New Ford Police Interceptor tech protects cops' backsides

Mon, 22 Jul 2013

It was only a matter of time before law enforcement agencies would realize the potential of driver-assist technology for use in their Ford Police Interceptors, and, now that they have, those back-up cameras and radar systems won't be used just for parking, but for security, as well.
The surveillance mode system works when the camera or radar detects movement from behind the vehicle, and if it does when it's activated, an alarm will alert the officer inside the car, the driver's side window will roll up and the doors will lock, protecting the officer from an unwanted intrusion. The officer, of course, has the option to turn surveillance mode off, mainly in urban areas where pedestrians would constantly set the alarm off, and it can only be activated when the police car is in park.
Randy Freiburger, Ford's police and ambulance fleet supervisor, came up with the patent-pending idea when researching the needs of police officers and riding along with them, during which time he realized officers would be safer with an extra set of eyes watching the area behind their cars, especially at night or when they're completing paperwork, using the in-car computer or handling a radar gun. "Unfortunately, there are people with bad intentions who sneak up on police officers," he says.

Ford C-Max spied with fresh updates

Fri, 05 Sep 2014

The Ford C-Max hatchback looks to be getting a few cosmetic updates, as evidenced in this latest set of spy photos. Like the smaller Focus, which also received a nip/tuck for the 2015 model year, the C-Max appears to be getting a revised front fascia with slimmer headlamps and a more, shall we say, Aston Martin-like grille. Around back, there looks to be a new bumper with redesigned taillamps, as well.
In other markets, the C-Max people-mover is available with a range of powertrains, but here in the US, it exists either as a traditional gas-electric or plug-in hybrid. The C-Max's fuel economy has been a particular topic of interest lately, with its official fuel economy ratings having been lowered twice since the vehicle's launch. Sales initially suffered a bit following this fiasco, though numbers have since leveled out. It's unclear if Ford is working on any powertrain tweaks for the updated C-Max seen here, however.
Ford has likely spruced up the hatch's interior, as well, though we don't have photos of that at this time. Mum's the word on when we'll see the new C-Max, but our best guess is that it'll arrive sometime in the next year.

Fallon picks Ford F-150 King Ranch, launches dealership contest

Tue, 01 Apr 2014

New truck! Jimmy Fallon of The Tonight Show has been searching for the perfect new truck for a few weeks now, soliciting help from all corners in the process. Last night, Fallon made the announcement that the Ford F-150 King Ranch - in all of its cowboy glory - had been picked as his big winner.
To add some more spice to a storyline that now dips deeply into the realm of the advertorial, Fallon also announced a contest to see which Ford dealership would get the privilege of selling him the King Ranch. Dubbed "Fingers on a 4x4" The Tonight Show has invited 10 dealer reps from around the country to keep their hands on Jimmy's F-150 for as long as possible. Last salesperson standing wins.
Watch Fallon make his pick and introduce the dealer reps below, and be sure to click on the second video for a live-streaming feed of Fingers on a 4x4 in action (the contest seems to be going strong).
