'84 MotorWeek Cherokee, Bronco and Blazer comparison indulges your SUV nostalgia

Fri, Jan 16 2015

These days, truck-based, full-frame SUVs are somewhat of a rarity on the auto landscape due to the rapid rise in popularity of easier-driving, car-based crossovers. Although, without the gradually building popularity of these chunky, high-riding vehicles decades ago, it's unlikely that America's roads would be filled with so many CUVs today. In its latest dig into the archives, MotorWeek has found a 1984 comparison test of a trio of these early Sport Utility Wagons, as long-time host John Davis called them, that helped get acceptance of this segment going. This is a red, white and blue test of the SUVs from American automakers at the time and pits the Chevrolet Blazer, Ford Bronco and Jeep Cherokee (specifically in Wagoneer guise) against each other. Driving manners and interior usability are considered in the evaluation, but Motorweek actually takes these vehicles off road, too. Among the bigger revelations is the improvement in on-road ability in the past 30 years. While specific 0-60 times aren't given, all three models take around 10 seconds just to get to around 50 miles per hour in the 500-feet on-ramp acceleration test. Check out this clip to see just how far this segment has progressed in the past three decades or just get a blast of nostalgia from these now vintage models. Autoblog Minute: Ford Ranger may return to US

Wed, Aug 26 2015

Is Ford planning to bring back its midsize Ranger pickup to the US? Autoblog's Adam Morath reports on this edition of Autoblog Minute. Show full video transcript text [00:00:00] Is Ford planning to bring back its midsize Ranger pickup to the U.S? I'm Adam Morath, and this is your Autoblog Minute. The Detroit News reports that Ford is planning to build its Ranger Pickup truck at the Michigan Assembly Plant in 2018, citing unnamed sources with knowledge of Ford's plans during its ongoing negotiations with the UAW. Autoblog reached out to Ford for comment. [00:00:30] Quote: "We will move production of the next-generation Ford Focus and C-MAX, which currently are built at Michigan Assembly Plant, beginning in 2018. We actively are pursuing future vehicle alternatives to produce at Michigan Assembly and will discuss this issue with UAW leadership as part of the upcoming negotiations." The 2011 Ranger was the last model-year available in the U.S., though Ford currently sells its redesigned Ranger overseas, including in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific. [00:01:00] With pickup sales on the rise, and the recent critical success of GM's Chevy Colorado midsize truck, the time may be right to revive the Ranger, but compact and midsize trucks only make up a small percentage of sales in America. Truck fans out there, let us know what you think: Can the Ford Ranger continue to revive the compact and midsize pickup market in the U.S? Or, will full-size work trucks like the F-150 continue to dominate? Sound off in the comments. For Autoblog, I'm Adam Morath. Autoblog Minute is a short-form video news series reporting on all things automotive. Each segment offers a quick and clear picture of what's happening in the automotive industry from the perspective of Autoblog's expert editorial staff, auto executives, and industry professionals.

Aussie Ford Falcon GT shows its rear end to Lamborghini Gallardo

Sun, 27 Apr 2014

When Ford Australia announces, as it did recently, that it wants to celebrate the end of its Ford Performance Vehicle division with a Falcon FPV GT-F that celebrates big-bore origins of the nameplate, it's talking about the kind of car in this video.
At some point the classic Falcon GT - said to be an XY series - was invited to a test of acceleration against a Lamborghini Gallardo. At the very least, the Falcon GT had a 351 cubic-inch motor and 300 horsepower, but whatever this guy's got under the hood of his yellow sedan makes has him so confident that he doesn't even move his elbow from its resting place on the door.
You'll find a reminder of Ford Australia's heyday, a raucous exhaust note and some NSFW language in the short video below.
