2015 Ford Mustang will tell authorities how you crashed and if you were belted [w/video]
Sat, 28 Jun 2014When the 2015 Ford Mustang hits dealers, it will be with a new batch of features that will power up Sync's 911 Assist feature, and provide an even greater degree of information to first responders in the event of an accident.
911 Assist will already make a phone call, via a Bluetooth-connected phone, should you bin your car. The automatic message to first responders is a pre-recorded blurb from Ford. With the new enhancements, though, emergency personnel can learn about the maximum change in velocity and whether the crash involved a front, rear, side or a rollover impact. 911 Assist will also send information about how many seat belts were in use and if airbags deployed, allowing more accurate dispatch of resources.
"Sync will only broadcast relevant information to save time, and it constructs a very efficient message for the operator," said David Hatton, the global project leader with Ford Connected Services. "After the introductory message, the voice line opens automatically and occupants can speak directly with the operator via Sync's hands-free functionality."
Here's more of the Ford GT soundtrack
Mon, Aug 3 2015You probably won't be surprised to find out that that while we outsiders were speculating on the racing plans for the new Ford GT, the automaker was already testing the American exotic on track. Ford Performance has just posted some footage from one of those tests and it's worth a watch. In spite of that early exhaust promo and Xcar's two in-depth videos on the racer and the road-going coupe, this is the first time we've been treated to sustained looks at the track version just laying in laps and roaring by. Now that we know Ford's plans include running four cars throughout the 2016 season, the early testing makes sense. Ford will have two cars running in the GTE-Pro class in the Tudor United Sports Car Championship and another two in the same class in the FIA World Endurance Championship, all of them campaigned by Chip Ganassi Racing with the Felix Sabates team. Then the company plans to have all four cars at Le Mans, which will be Chip Ganassi's first ever tilt at the French event. If you want some practice picking out exhaust notes come 2016, check out the video above. Ford Fiesta 1.0L EcoBoost sales robust in early going
Tue, 13 May 2014Okay, okay, okay, so I was just a smidge wrong. Those that read my review of the Ford Fiesta with the new 1.0-liter, EcoBoost engine will know that while I really enjoyed the torquey little three-cylinder, I was concerned that Ford's decision to force 1.0-liter owners into a manual transmission, steel wheels and one trim level might hurt sales of the new engine. I was also concerned that the promised 45-mile-per-gallon highway rating wouldn't be enough to tempt buyers into trying an engine that's so far outside of what the general public is use to. My concerns, though, seem to have been for naught.
While not doing a booming business on the triple-equipped Fiesta, Ford is seeing a take rate of four to eight percent per month in the engine's first few months on sale. Now, four to eight percent might not sound like a lot - if, like last year, the Fiesta sells around 71,000 units, there'd be barely 5,600 1.0-liter models on the road. It is also small potatoes relative to the take rate on EcoBoost-equipped vehicles across the Ford range, which US sales analyst Erich Merkle estimates to be roughly 35 to 40 percent of retail sales. Still, according to The Detroit News, the 1.0-liter is getting adopted at roughly the same rate as the sparkling Fiesta ST, which should be a solid indication of just how well this little engine is doing.
The 1.0-liter's success "really speaks volumes, not just to what we're doing with the Fiesta, but with EcoBoost in general," Merkle told Autoblog.
