Ford recalling 390,000 cars over door latch woes

Ford is recalling certain Fiesta, Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles due to faulty door latches, marking the latest in what seems to be a recurring issue for the Blue Oval. This is the third door latch recall from Ford in 2015, following a 213,000-unit recall in March and a 205,000-unit recall in January. This one, however, is significantly larger. A total of 390,000 units are affected, including Fusions and MKZs from model years 2013 and 2014, as well as Fiestas from model years 2012 to 2014. A "broken pawl spring tab" is the culprit, potentially keeping doors from latching shut. According to Ford, even if the door does shut, it could come open again without warning. The affected Fiestas were built between February 1, 2012 and May 31, 2013 at the Cuautitlan, Mexico factory. The Fusion and MKZ siblings, meanwhile, were screwed together at Hermosillo Assembly in Mexico between July 1, 2012 to May 31, 2013. Ford is aware of three minor reports of door malfunctions. In two cases, the door bounced back open, quite literally hitting drivers on their way out. In the third case, a door swung open of its own accord while a driver was attempting to park, hitting another vehicle. Bomb threat closes Ford Romeo Engine Plant [UPDATE]

UPDATE: Ford has released the following statement about what's happening at the factory: "The Ford Romeo Engine Plant was reopened at 12:47 PM after law enforcement investigated and cleared the site. The afternoon and evening shifts are expected to report at their usual start times. Further questions on the investigation by law enforcement can be directed to the Romeo Police Department." Due to a bomb threat, Ford has evacuated its Romeo Engine Plant, and law enforcement is on the scene. According to the Detroit News, police with bomb-sniffing dogs are searching the building, which covers over 2 million square feet. Ford spokesperson Mike Moran wouldn't disclose to Autoblog how the threat was received but said that it came in between 7:00 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. Eastern on July 30. "The day shift was sent home," he said. According to the Detroit News, the second shift was also asked not to come in. About 500 people work at the plant, Moran indicated. At this time, Moran said that there hadn't yet been an update from law enforcement whether anything had been found in their search. The Romeo Police Department confirms to Autoblog that it's handling the investigation. However, the authorities wouldn't comment further about what is happening at the plant at this time. NHTSA investigating 500k Ford and Mercury cars for lighting failures

The Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis might be long gone as new models in showrooms, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration might check them out yet again for a potential problem. At the urging of North Carolina Consumers Council, the agency may open another investigation into the front lighting control module on vehicles from the 2003-2005 model years, and NHTSA estimates the issue could affect 517,945 vehicles. If the module stops working, it can cause a complete failure of all forward lighting, including the headlights. NHTSA previously investigated the issue in 2008 and 2009 but found no need for a recall, according to Bloomberg. Ford also extended the warranty on the part to 15 years or 250,000 miles. To prompt this new request, the North Carolina Consumers Council received a letter from a woman experiencing the module's failure. Upon further investigation, the council found 604 complaints of this problem on NHTSA's website, including seven crashes. Furthermore, the group has alleged that dealers told customers that the parts to perform the replacement weren't available, despite the extended warranty. According to the government agency, "A defect petition has been opened to evaluate the issue and make a grant or deny decision."
