Drive GREEN, cruise in the HOV Lane and SAVE, SAVE, SAVE !

This car is a Police Interceptor (P71), and was a Fire Department vehicle, driven by only two people before I bought it a year ago. So it was not abused like your average Police Cruiser. It has all the amenities typical for these cars: ABS brakes, electric windows, cruise control, etc. The interior is sea blue, with cloth bucket seats in the front and a matching vinyl bench in the rear. The carpets and headliner are also sea blue. The car also comes with an upgraded 200 Watt Dual Bluetooth Stereo with remote control.

This Crown Vic is in excellent condition and has just over 27,250 miles on it. (Still registered and in use.) Brakes and tires are good, all with about 65% of their respective life remaining. Additionally, I just had some important service work performed to make it handle like new. On October 26th at 27,100 miles the following new parts were installed at a total cost of $745: A NEW set (4) of Monroe severe service shocks, NEW Moog front sway bar bushings, and a NEW idler arm.

Best of all, this car is an OEM (built by Ford in Canada) dedicated COMPRESSED NATURAL GAS (CNG) vehicle. This allows you not only to save a bundle on fuel costs, but you can legally cruise the HOV/ Diamond Lane by yourself during commute hours, because by burning Natural Gas you are in a Clean Air Vehicle -- Greener even than most Toyota Prius', and with a lot more room and comfort. The HOV Lane saves you a lot of time. And to save even more on fuel, this car had differential gears with a final drive ratio of 1 : 2.73 installed, which lets you save about 10% compared to a standard P71's rear gears.

When cruising at 70-75+mph on the freeway I average 24 mpg. In city traffic that drops down to about 16 mpg. 19 mpg is my average, but with a gentler right foot you can easily bring that up to 20+ mpg. The installed CNG tanks give you a range of 160-200 miles. The CNG tanks are certified until 11/2015 and the white HOV Lane stickers that come with the car are good until at least 12/2019 (Per AB 266).

At current fuel prices of around $3.75 per gallon, the $2.20 per GGE Natural Gas this car uses will save you an average of $1.55 per gallon! At an average of 19 mpg with 20,000 miles per year driven, that will save you a cool $1,600+ in just one year! You can even a reduce your fuel costs to under $1/ GGE by getting your own compressor system and a special rate from PG&E. If you do, you will more than double your fuel cost savings.

Of course, if you use this car as a taxi (which is what I had planned) you will save a lot more. When you run this car for 5 shifts a week averaging 200 miles a shift, for 50 weeks a year, in the 50,000 miles driven you will save $4,000+! ! So after just over a year and a half, this car will have paid for itself, with just the money you saved on fuel costs. All the while you're passing the competition in the HOV lane on your way back from the City or the Airport. If you have or get your own CNG compressor you can save close to $9,000 in the first year !

Because I was going to turn this car into a taxi, I have some additional items available that you may want to get if you also plan on using this vehicle as a taxi. These items are not included in my price for the car. Here's the short list and the prices for the individual items:

• NEW Energy Suspension Polyurethane Bushings for Front A-Arms: $80 ($99.95+tax at Kragen)
• NEW Moving LED Message / Taxi sign, with base modified to fit a Crown Victoria: $250
• NEW CentroDyne Silent S700 Advanced Taxi Meter (installed) PRINTER READY: $300
• Upgraded Sea Blue Headliner, w. Map Lights and rear Passenger Lights: $180
• Upgraded Sea Blue 2-part Sun Visors, Driver's & Passenger Side w. lighted Mirrors: $120
• 415 Area Code Vanity Phone Number 5XX-TAXI: $3,500

• PACKAGE DEAL: Everything including the TAXI Phone Number: $10,500

NHTSA investigating 725k Ford, Mercury vehicles for stalling issue

Mon, 25 Feb 2013

Owners of Ford Escape, Mercury Mariner, Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan models, listen up. According to a report on Automotive News, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into these four vehicles totaling an estimated 725,000 units. The investigation appears to center around a malfunctioning throttle body on non-hybrid models of the 2005-2012 Escape and 2011-2012 Fusion. With Mercury dying off after the 2011 model year, this probe will also apply to the 2005 through 2011 Mariner and the 2011 Milan. There has been some discussion around the Escape stalling issue for some time now, but this investigation appears to be larger in scope than before.
Though not a recall yet, NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 123 complaints of stalling or surging vehicles, while Ford itself has logged 1,472 complaints. The investigation report, which is posted below, seems to indicate that a faulty circuit board for the throttle body could cause the vehicle to go into limp mode, which, according to NHTSA, could cause complaints of both stalling and surging.

Vile Gossip | Adventures in tire testing

Fri, Oct 13 2017

Jean Jennings has been writing about cars for more than 30 years, after stints as a taxicab driver and as a mechanic in the Chrysler Proving Grounds Impact Lab. She was a staff writer at Car and Driver magazine, the first executive editor and former president and editor-in-chief of Automobile Magazine , the founder of the blog Jean Knows Cars and former automotive correspondent for Good Morning America . She has lifetime awards from both the Motor Press Guild and the New England Motor Press Association. This is her first column for Autoblog — look for more Vile Gossip in the future. I began writing at Car and Driver magazine back in its golden age in the 1970s, before I'd actually read it. I knew very little about cars. The only magazine I read religiously was Four Wheeler because I owned big trucks and liked to go off-roading with my Chrysler Proving Grounds friends. My vast 10 years of driving experience up to that point (high-speed dirt-road idiot, taxicab driver, Chrysler Proving Grounds test driver) had less bearing on my being hired at Car and Driver than the fact that the editor just wanted to rile up the all-male staff. He didn't need me for that. They were already in full dudgeon when I arrived. They'd just spent a chunk of time testing a stack of tires for their big tire-test issue, and the editor-in-chief was toe-to-toe with the technical editor over the rankings of the top 10 tires. It was loud, and it was angry. I had no idea that car magazines tested tires. Cab driving had led me to believe that airing up a tire and changing a flat was all you needed to know. I changed so many flats on that cab, I eventually wound up in front of a live audience on the " Oprah Winfrey Show" demonstrating my brilliance with a jack and a tire iron. My point, of course, is that tires are more controversial, and also more essential, than you'd think. My other point is that it's good to get worked up about the subject, but not quite so good to let yourself be seen, as I did, on my hands and knees with my ass up in the air on national TV. This is how I prefer to test a tire: First, pick a top brand. Then accept their invitation to try and beat the crap out of their tire. I chose Yokohama, celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The big news for them was the GEOLANDER M/T G003!

Devils, Details and Weight Reduction
There are many things I could call this exercise. A party is not one of them.
I've spent three days crammed in the axle well of this 1989 Mustang with nothing to keep me company beyond a trouble light, a DeWalt drill on the very last of its legs and billion razor sharp, red hot slivers of metal with an affinity for my most sensitive of regions. My joints are raw from crawling around on the concrete. I'm half deaf from the shriek of the spot weld cutter and the boom of the cold chisel and hammer.
