16.5 bhp, 569 cc overhead valve four-cylinder engine, four-speed manual transmission, independent front Dubonnet-type suspension, semi-elliptic leaf spring rear suspension, four-wheel drum brakes. Wheelbase: 66.4" The diminutive Fiat Topolino inhabits the earliest memories of many European auto enthusiasts. The Topolino 500 series was one of Fiat's most popular models, and its genesis was a contest arranged by then Fiat Chairman Agnelli. The goal was for his designers and engineers to create an Italian people's car to rival that which was being produced by Porsche.
The car’s practical two-seat interior and lively motor remain in well-preserved, unrestored condition. The car presents very well. On the road, the little Topolino garners smiles from all, especially children who relate well to its size. The half-litre motor and four-speed manual transmission are capable of attaining speeds over 50 mph. On a sunny day with the fabric top opened, the driving experience is simply delightful. Many enthusiasts appreciate the Topolino's clever and practical engineering. Under the hood, for example, the engine is placed ahead of the front axle with the radiator behind it. This helped enable the streamlined shape of the nose. The compact front suspension is a Dubonnet-type that incorporates transverse torsion bars, a spring design not unfamiliar to Porsche 911, 912, 914 and 930 owners. When considering the range of Topolinos one could acquire, this 500C includes all of the main enhancements made over the 500's impressive life span – the overhead-valve engine (as opposed to the less powerful side-valve unit), a lightweight aluminum cylinder head and the major restyling of 1949. Sergio Marchionne says hybrids will replace small diesel Fiats
Thu, Mar 9 2017FCA's Sergio Marchionne is convinced diesel is dead when it comes to small city cars. That means the upcoming new generation Fiat 500 will lose its 1.3-liter MultiJet diesel and gain a 48-volt hybrid powertrain. Nitrogen oxide emissions are something you want to get rid of in city use, where the 500 and its competitors shine. It seems only the brave will continue selling diesel cars in this class. In an interview with AutoExpress, Marchionne says he's certain about diesel's fate. "There are very few things that are certain in this market - apart from one, and that is that small displacement diesels are dead. I think everything else is fair play, so we'll experiment," says Marchionne. In the city car class, manufacturers will have to reach a purchase price for hybrid tech that's similarly as low as gasoline and diesel powered small cars. But creating full hybrids out of the 500 and the Panda would render them so expensive, it would be lethal for Fiat. The solution will most likely be a 48-volt "mild" hybrid system, which can create some of the mileage gains of a full hybrid system but at much less cost. "I think hybrids are inevitable," Marchionne says. "The question is not the technology, it's a question of the cost and whether the consumer will pay. We will have to play with a variety of solutions." Among that variety: Could replacing the diesel model in Europe with the 48-volt system lead to sales of that system in the US, as an alternative or even replacement for the all-electric Fiat 500? All we know is, Marchionne in the past has bemoaned the EV model as a loss leader. The next-generation Fiat 500 is expected to reach production in 2019.
FCA posts $716m profit in 2014, has big plans for 2015
Fri, Jan 30 2015In practically every metric, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles announced growing worldwide earnings for 2014 in its latest financial release. The automaker sold 4.608 million vehicles globally for the year, a 6-percent jump, and total revenue grew 11 percent to 96.090 billion euros ($109 billion). Profits before taxes also increased by 161 million euros ($182 million) from last year to 1.176 billion euros ($1.3 billion). However, net profits did tumble by 1.319 billion euros ($1.5 billion) to a total of 632 million euros ($716 million). These figures put FCA slightly ahead of what some analysts expected. According to Automotive News, the company's adjusted earnings before taxes and interest of 3.651 billion euros ($4.1 billion) beat a forecast figure of 3.4 billion euros ($3.9 billion). Regionally, Europe is showing signs of a comeback. FCA lost 109 million euros ($123 million) there in 2014, but that was almost a triumph compared to the 506 million euro ($573 million) loss in 2013. According to Automotive News, North America played a major role in the company's success, accounting for 55 percent of its revenue. While these annual figures show growth, FCA is even more optimistic about its prospects in 2015. The company is forecasting shipments of between 4.8 and 5 million vehicles worldwide next year. It also estimates earnings before interest and taxes to reach 4.1 billion and 4.5 billion euros ($4.6 billion – $5.1 billion). You can read FCA's full results in PDF format, here. While this release focuses on worldwide figures, FCA US, previously known as Chrysler Group, announces its US results on February 3. 2016 Fiat 500X joins IIHS Top Safety Pick+ ranks [w/video]
Wed, Oct 7 2015The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has awarded the Fiat brand its highest honor for the first time, naming the new 500X a Top Safety Pick+. It's only the second vehicle in the FCA empire, after the Chrysler 200, to score so well on the non-profit's crash testing. The 500X got top marks across the board, ranking "Good" on all the crash tests, including the tough small-overlap test. In fact, the only area where the high-riding Fiat was given a demerit was on its optional crash-prevention system. It only scored an "Advanced" rating, rather than the top grade of "Superior" – vehicles need at least an "Advanced" crash prevention rating to earn a TSP+. Of course, the whole reason we cover all these Top Safety Pick stories is so we can post video of the crash tests. The 500X story is no different, as the IIHS gives us its typical multi-angle, slow-motion peek at the small-overlap test for Fiat's new CUV. Check out the video up top. Related Video: New Fiat 500X small SUV earns IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ award ARLINGTON, Va. — The new Fiat 500X earns good ratings in all five of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's crashworthiness tests and an advanced rating for front crash prevention. The small SUV qualifies for the IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ award. It is the second vehicle from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles after the Chrysler 200 to earn the Institute's highest award for 2015. In the most challenging IIHS evaluation, the small overlap front crash test, the 500X's driver space was maintained reasonably well, with maximum intrusion of 4 inches at the door hinge pillar and instrument panel. The dummy's head contacted the front airbag, though it then moved to the left side, leaving the head vulnerable to contact with forward structure. The side curtain airbag deployed and had sufficient forward coverage to protect the head on the left side. Measures taken from the dummy indicate that injuries to the left lower leg would be possible in a crash of this severity, but the likelihood of other injuries is low. In the moderate overlap test, the only issue was possible injuries to the right foot. There were no problems with the side crash test performance. The vehicle also has good head restraints and seats for whiplash prevention in a rear crash and a good roof strength rating for rollover protection. The 500X has an optional front crash prevention system that earns an advanced rating.
