16.5 bhp, 569 cc overhead valve four-cylinder engine, four-speed manual transmission, independent front Dubonnet-type suspension, semi-elliptic leaf spring rear suspension, four-wheel drum brakes. Wheelbase: 66.4" The diminutive Fiat Topolino inhabits the earliest memories of many European auto enthusiasts. The Topolino 500 series was one of Fiat's most popular models, and its genesis was a contest arranged by then Fiat Chairman Agnelli. The goal was for his designers and engineers to create an Italian people's car to rival that which was being produced by Porsche.
The car’s practical two-seat interior and lively motor remain in well-preserved, unrestored condition. The car presents very well. On the road, the little Topolino garners smiles from all, especially children who relate well to its size. The half-litre motor and four-speed manual transmission are capable of attaining speeds over 50 mph. On a sunny day with the fabric top opened, the driving experience is simply delightful. Many enthusiasts appreciate the Topolino's clever and practical engineering. Under the hood, for example, the engine is placed ahead of the front axle with the radiator behind it. This helped enable the streamlined shape of the nose. The compact front suspension is a Dubonnet-type that incorporates transverse torsion bars, a spring design not unfamiliar to Porsche 911, 912, 914 and 930 owners. When considering the range of Topolinos one could acquire, this 500C includes all of the main enhancements made over the 500's impressive life span – the overhead-valve engine (as opposed to the less powerful side-valve unit), a lightweight aluminum cylinder head and the major restyling of 1949. Germany threatens to ban FCA vehicles over diesel emissions dispute
Tue, May 24 2016Germany is threatening to ban sales of FCA products over diesel emissions. According to the newspaper Bild Am Sonntag, Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority found evidence of a so-called defeat device that shuts down certain emissions controls after running for 22 minutes. A standard diesel emissions test in the European Union reportedly takes 20 minutes to complete. FCA denies the allegations. "We believe all our vehicles respect EU emissions standards and we believe Italian regulators are the competent authority to evaluate this," the company said in a statement. The latter part of that statement drew ire from German authorities, especially after FCA declined to meet with German transport minister Alexander Dobrindt to discuss the issue. Graziano Delrio, the Italian Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, vowed to work with German authorities on behalf of FCA. According to EU law, FCA is required to homologate its vehicles in Italy because that's where its regional operations are based. When will the diesel-scented soap opera end? We wish we knew, but our Magic 8 Ball is covered in soot. New auto loans could soon extend out to 84 months
Sun, Apr 22 2018Cars and trucks are more expensive than ever before. In order to boost sales and help consumers afford new vehicles, automakers are offering longer and longer terms for auto loans. This past week, Bloomberg reported that FCA's Ram Trucks division is currently offering the longest loans. Some stretch to 73 months. Jeep, Fiat and Chevy aren't far behind. More noteworthy is that we'll likely soon see lenders moving from 73-month to 84-month loans. That's seven years worth of interest. More than two-thirds of US auto sales come from light trucks like the Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado and Ram 1500. The average transaction price of a new vehicle is well over $30,000. It's not difficult to spec out a heavily-optioned truck up to $60,000. Vehicles depreciate from the moment they roll off a dealer lot, and these six or seven-year loans could hurt consumers and lenders both in the long run. The U.S. Senate voted last week to kill rules that would prevent discriminatory auto lending. These Obama-era guidelines were meant to curtail lenders who offered higher loans based on race, religion, sex or national origin. 2019 Fiat 500X gets two-tone 120th Anniversary Edition
Thu, Oct 10 2019Fiat is 120 years old this year, so naturally it has created a special edition car to celebrate. Behold the 2019 Fiat 500X 120th Anniversary Edition in its two-tone glory. Every example will have the top half painted black to contrast nicely with three of the four available colors. It will be offered in a gloss white, a pearl white, a silver and in black. The last of those, of course, is the one of four that won't contrast with the roof. Besides the roof, the special 500X gets black mirror caps and black 18-inch wheels. There's also a smattering of 120th Anniversary badges around the exterior, plus standard LED headlights and fog lights. The interior has a black painted dashboard and a unique cloth upholstery with striped brown and black inserts in the seats. Unlike many special editions, the 500X 120th Anniversary Edition is relatively affordable with a base price of $27,230 including destination. That's just $995 more than the base Pop trim level. If you're interested, the special models will be on dealer lots by the end of the year.
