Refreshed Fiat 500 and 500c show their new face on the open road
Mon, Jun 8 2015We saw the refreshed Fiat 500 and 500c completely covered in camouflage in a parking garage just a few days ago, but unfortunately none of those shots gave a really good look of the redesigned front face. These latest photos show these twins out in the open and provide a better look at the Fiats' thorough concealment. Despite being fully covered, the changes still appear subtle compared to the current 500's design. The headlights seem slightly reshaped with more of an oval shape then the present, rounder units, and the lower intake in the front air dam also looks larger. At the rear, new taillights and a tweaked bumper are among the adjustments. The previous spy shots also indicated some alterations to the interior. The refreshed 500 and 500c reportedly will make their big debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Enjoy the camo'd preview in the gallery above.
2014 Fiat 500L
Wed, 19 Jun 2013Unexpectedly, This Opposite Attracts
Back in 2007 when the Fiat 500 was launched, I was unrepentantly nuts about the thing. From the first time my eyes clapped on the Nuevo Cinquecento at the Geneva Motor Show that year, I wanted one. Since there were no plans for a North American model at the time, I had to settle for purchasing a 1/18th-scale diecast at the expo. When Fiat finally returned to the US and the Cinquecento went on sale in 2011, I was no less excited.
And then I drove one, and the bloom was off my little Italian rose. Oh, I still appreciated its size and high style, but I found it wholly unsatisfying to drive, something that wouldn't be rectified until the Abarth arrived. It wasn't that the standard 500 was slow - I expected that - it was that its wonky driving position, lackluster transmissions and ropey steering all stood in the way of appreciating its other virtues. The Abarth's characterful powertrain would eventually come along to alleviate most of those pains, but not all of them.
Fiat gives outgoing Ferrari chairman $35M severance package
Thu, 11 Sep 2014Luca di Montezemolo may not have wanted to leave Ferrari this way, but don't feel too bad for the departing chairman, because he'll be hitting the ground with a golden parachute so big that he'll never have to work again.
According to the latest reports, Fiat will pay Montezemolo 26.95 million euros (nearly $35 million) in severance pay. A little more than half of that will be paid in a lump sum of 13.71 million euros ($17.7M, equivalent to five times his annual salary) on January 31, 2015, with the rest to be paid within the next 20 years.
The payment is contingent on Montezemolo not going to work for a competitor, so don't expect to see him replacing Stephan Winkelmann at Lamborghini or Wolfgang Dürheimer at Bugatti any time soon. At least not until March 2017. Of course with that much cash on hand, the 67-year-old marquis need never work again, but considering how busy he's used to keeping himself, we'd be surprised if he didn't pop up again somewhere.
