Fiat Chrysler Australia executive in trouble over misuse of company funds

While the merger to create FCA was coming together, its managing director for Australia, Clyde Campbell, was allegedly racking up 30 million Australian dollars ($23.1 million) in spending for himself, family, and friends. Now, the former boss is facing a court case from the automaker's legal team for the purported misappropriation. Among the more opulent expenses that Campbell allegedly put on Chrysler's tab included a 40-foot yacht worth the equivalent of $308,000 and lavish Christmas parties for workers, according to The Age. Despite being required to only travel in economy class and get permission for international travel, he also reportedly racked up the equivalent of over $413,000 travel expenses. "The more we dug, the more we found," said an unnamed source to The Age. Campbell came to power in Australia as a general manager for DaimlerChrysler, and became managing director in October 2010. He was reportedly a close friend with former Mercedes-Benz USA CEO Ernst Lieb. After Lieb lost his wrongful dismissal lawsuit, Campbell allegedly helped his friend's partnership in an Aussie auto dealer by using FCA funds for financial support totaling the equivalent of about $3 million. All of this came to light when Pat Dougherty came over from the US to be president and CEO of FCA Australia in December 2014. The staff spilled the full story on Dougherty's first day. "I walked into his office and let it all out. I don't think he knew what hit him," another source said to The Age. A team of forensic accountants was brought in to investigate. The reason that this took so long to discover was that no one was paying attention. First, sales in Australia were growing under Campbell. Also, "in my opinion, back in Michigan, head office didn't have its eyes on the road. They only had eyes on the Fiat deal," an insider said to The Age. Fiat adds Adventurer Edition package to 2018 500X compact crossover

Fiat says it will offer the 2018 500X in a new Adventurer Edition package starting this summer, adding a rugged outdoors theme to its quirky Italian subcompact crossover. The Adventurer Edition is based on the 500X Trekking model, and its more sporty front and rear fascia designs. It adds 18-inch aluminum wheels, black roof rails, crossbars, orange mirror caps and body-side graphics along the bottom of the doors. It also gets front and rear splash guards. Inside, buyers get a molded rear cargo tray and all-weather front and rear slush mats. It'll come in a choice of four exterior paint colors: a white clear coat, black clear coat, graphite grey and grey metallic. Interior color choices are black or brown. The 500X Trekking is equipped with a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter inline-four-cylinder engine that produces 180 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque and is mated to a nine-speed automatic. It's available with front- or all-wheel drive, the latter of which uses a disconnecting rear axle to improve efficiency when all-wheel-drive isn't needed. It also comes with a slew of advanced safety technologies and a Uconnect 7-inch infotainment touchscreen. Choosing the Adventurer Edition package will add $945 to the $24,680 starting price for front-wheel drive and the $26,580 floor for all-wheel-drive-equipped version. FCA US under-reported death and injury claims to NHTSA

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says FCA US significantly under-reported death and injury claims due to flaws in its early warning system. The government first discovered a potential problem with the automaker's reporting in late July, and FCA US has been investigating the issue since. NHTSA claims that the problem appears linked to the way the company gathers and reports safety information. The agency is still investigating how serious the flaws are and their causes. "This represents a significant failure to meet a manufacturer's safety responsibilities," NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind.Rosekind said in a statement. FCA US admits that it "identified deficiencies" in the reporting, but in a statement the company said that it notified NHTSA of the issue immediately. The company promised that it is taking this problem "extremely seriously" and pledged to remedy the situation. In late July, FCA US was hit with a potential $105-million fine by NHTSA for the way the automaker conducted some recalls. As part of that agreement, the company also consented to more rigorous oversight by safety regulators in the future and a buy-back of some affected vehicles. Other automakers have been punished for failing to submit EWR data. Honda incurred a $70 million fine in January from NHTSA for missing 1,729 incidents over 11 years. Ferrari had to pay $3.5 million in 2014 for not sending them in for three years.
