Fiat gives 2019 124 Spider the Urbana Edition treatment
Fri, Apr 12 2019Fiat is celebrating the arrival of spring and drop-top cruising season by offering the blacked-out Urbana Edition treatment on the 124 Spider for the 2019 model year. The move follows the Urbana Edition rebranding — it was formerly called Urbana Trekking — first shown earlier this year on the 500L. The package offers dark interior and exterior accents to the convertible roadster. It comes with Black Diamond 17-inch aluminum wheels fitted with performance tires, dual exhaust tips, black exterior accents and gloss-black finishes on the A-pillar bar bezel, seat-back pillar and side mirror caps. You also get front fog lamps. Inside, the package gets you matte gray accents, plus leather and microfiber on the seats and wrapping the instrument panel and instrument cluster hood. Fiat is offering the Urbana Edition package only on the Classica model of the 124 Spider for an extra $995, which brings the total cost to $27,680 including destination. It'll be on display next week at the New York International Auto Show. Fiat refreshed the 124 Spider for 2019 by adding features including a rear backup camera, a standard seven-inch Fiat Connect 7.0 touchscreen and offering custom center-stripe design options on the entry-level Classica. The 124 Spider is heavily based on the Mazda Miata and built in the same plant in Japan, but it uses its own 1.4-liter turbocharged inline-four engine. You can read Autoblog's drivers' notes on the roadster from 2017.
MoMA displays a classic Fiat 500 at its Good Design exhibition
Fri, Dec 14 2018The original, rear-engined Fiat 500 is a design icon thanks to its distinctly recognizable rounded shape and diminutive size. Millions were made from 1957 to 1975, plenty survive, and the car has received not one but two revivals, first in 1991 in the form of the literally named Cinquecento and then with the 2007-present, retro-styled "Nuova" 500. But it's the original that's still worth celebrating, and a new exhibition at New York's MoMA museum is doing just that. The industrial design exhibition, The Value of Good Design, displays an F series 500 as an "expression of form following function." The rear-engined 500 of 1957 was well-timed as Italy rose from the ruins of war and families needed an affordable car that could fit four -- and the 500's spacious packaging was found handy enough to warrant strong sales. And choosing a 500 didn't mean you would need to give up style, especially as a folding fabric roof made the 500 good for sunny weather outings as well (while also saving a bit of steel). Recently, Fiat's small-car know-how has been in the spotlight at various exhibitions. At the Grand Basel show in Switzerland, Italian design professor Paolo Tumminelli celebrated a beat-up, original Fiat Panda as "The very last car made for people, the last surviving witness of a time when the car was still serving humans -- and not the other way around." That is certainly true of the 500 as well, along with its successors, the 600 and 126 models. The below promotional Fiat video from 1957 shows just how cool the 500 was when it was new. MoMA's The Value of Good Design runs from February 10 to May 27. This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings.
2023 Fiat Topolino unveiled as tiny, city-only electric runabout
Wed, May 31 2023Fiat took a trip to the heritage well to launch its own version of the quirky Citroen Ami unveiled in 2020. Called Topolino, the electric two-seater (it's not legally considered a car) shares its basic proportions with its French sibling but features a retro-inspired exterior design. The name wasn't chosen randomly: Topolino (which means "little mouse" in Italian) was the nickname given to the original 500 built between 1936 and 1955. The first-generation model's contribution to the project stops there. Designers instead drew inspiration from the second-generation 500 to differentiate the modern-day Topolino from the Citroen-branded model, and we'd argue the front end is even more retro than the new 500's. It's characterized by a pair of small, round lights, smaller turn signals, and a piece of trim shaped like a metal bumper. Thick ropes replace the doors while creating a visual link between the Topolino and the beach-friendly 500 Jolly and 600 Jolly built by Ghia, among other coachbuilders, from the 1950s to the 1970s. Fiat hasn't released photos of the back end yet, and it's keeping the interior under wraps for the time being. The seats look a lot like the Ami's, however, and we're expecting most of the interior changes will be trim-related. Similarly, the Italian brand isn't ready to publish technical specifications. For context, the 1,070-pound Ami measures 95 inches long, 55 inches wide, and 60 inches tall; it fits in the back of a Ford F-250 Super Duty equipped with the longer of the two available cargo boxes. Power comes from an electric motor that draws electricity from a 5.5-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack to make eight horsepower. Driving range checks in at about 45 miles, which underlines the model's positioning as a low-speed, city-only vehicle, and if you keep your foot down you'll eventually reach a top speed of 27.9 mph. These riding mower-like specifications place the Topolino in the quadricycle segment. Built in Morocco, the Fiat Topolino will go on sale in select markets in the coming months. Pricing hasn't been announced but it's of little interest to us, because nothing suggests this tiny EV will receive clearance to travel to the United States. Across the pond, it's reasonable to assume pricing will start in the vicinity of ˆ10,000 (about $10,700). Keep an eye out for it the next time you're on a Mediterranean island.
