The vehicle being auctioned I have owned for about 28 years. During that time frame it has been the subject of an ongoing amateur restoration. Some of the reasons I bought it are it looked to be very original and complete, no rust or accident damage. Also in running condition. I repainted it about 24 years ago. The color is a good match to the original color. The dashboard was not repainted and so you can judge for yourself regarding the color match. I want to be clear about the term amateur restoration. The paint has several flaws, as well as chips and scratches. In my opinion, it still looks good from 10 - 15 feet. I never intended to make a show car out of this little Fiat; just a driver which is what I consider it. All four tires are in very good condition with low mileage. The wooden shift knob is apparently original but I have yet to see another Vignale with a similiar one. The hucaps are spun aluminum which I also have not seen on other models. The convertible top is in good condition and has the original side curtains. The two front bumpers have been re-chromed and also the speedometer bezel. The rear bumper has not been re-chromed and has some pitting. The speedometer is calibrated in kilometers. Odometer shows approximately 50,300 km. The engine and transaxle are in good running condition It has an "Abarth-style" exhaust which I installed myself. The seats are original; drivers seat has two small holes in the backrest. I added carpeting and insulating material some years ago. The original rubber matting is available; usable only for a pattern if desired. The windshield wipers are non-functional at this time. The linkage will need some adjustment, the motor is still good. There is no horn. Headlights and stoplights are working and the turn indicators. Battery charging light, oil pressure light and fuel indicator are working. Included with the vehicle are: original jack, 4-way lug wrench, incomplete tool kit and spare tire (not original). This vehicle is being sold sold as is. There is no warranty either stated or implied. This is a no reserve auction.       TERMS OF SALE: Buyer is responsible for all shipping costs and consignments. Buyer to pay a $500.00 deposit within 3 days of auction closing. Balance to be paid in full within 7 days of auction ending. Payment to be made by certified bank draft, wire transfer or cash (in person). All funds must clear before vehicle and title can be released.  I will cooperate with shipping arrangements as much as possible

Junkyard Gem: 1985 Bertone X1/9

Wed, May 1 2019

Sales of the Fiat X1/9 began in the United States in 1974, and the price tag was very reasonable for a mid-engined Italian two-seater. For a time, these cars were common sights on American streets, at least in non-rusty areas. Then Americans became disillusioned with the Fiat brand, and the company folded its tent and departed the continent after 1982, not returning until 2010. Automotive dealmaker Malcolm Bricklin saw an opportunity at that point, and his company began bringing in 124 Sport Spiders badged as Pininfarinas and X1/9s badged as Bertones. Here's an '85 Bertone in a California wrecking yard. Fiat had hired Bertone to design the X1/9 in the first place, so the badging change wasn't so jarring to those Americans familiar with the car's history. Bricklin introduced Subaru cars to the United States in the late 1960s, started his own car company in the middle 1970s, then went on to bring a Yugoslavian-built Fiat 127 variant to these shores, via the same company that was already bringing in the X1/9. Power came from what amounted to a Fiat 128 engine/transaxle assembly, mounted just behind the rear window. In 1985, the Bertone X1/9 had 75 horsepower and weighed just over a ton. This car still has the allegedly valuable hardtop. I'm pretty sure that every American X1/9 owner has several of these stashed away by now. Optimistically, Bertone used a six-digit odometer in this car. 188,285 miles would have been pretty respectable in a 1985 Corolla, never mind a Fiat known for shaky electrical systems and poor build quality. I still see quite a few X1/9s in the big self-service wrecking yards, and even more 124 Sport Spiders. The seat upholstery is very stylish. I checked this car's VIN on the California smog-check database, which shows that it last passed the emissions test in 2009. Perhaps something broke soon after that and the car awaited repairs that never came. It has both a trunk and a frunk. This content is hosted by a third party. Listen to the 2019 Fiat 124 Spider Abarth's gravelly growl

Sat, Aug 17 2019

While they share most of the same underpinnings, there's more to differentiate the 2019 Fiat 124 Spider Abarth from the Mazda MX-5 than just styling. It features a Fiat-designed and built turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder instead of the Mazda's naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter engine. And for the Abarth specifically, it has an amazing exhaust note courtesy of a Record Monza exhaust system. The upgraded exhaust is a standard feature on 2019 Abarth models, and it alone is worth considering the more aggressive-looking performance-oriented 124 variant. It gives the roadster an angry burble at idle, that turns into a gravelly growl as the revs rise. It's not quite as rorty as the straight-pipe system in the 500 Abarth hatchback, but it's close. The volume is pretty loud, but not so much that you'll set off car alarms. You can hear the various sounds in the video above that features start-up, idle, acceleration and free-revving.

Stellantis wants to outfit cars with AI software to drive revenue

Tue, Dec 7 2021

MILAN — Carmaker Stellantis announced a strategy Tuesday to embed AI-enabled software in 34 million vehicles across its 14 brands, hoping the tech upgrade will help it bring in 20 billion euros ($22.6 billion) in annual revenue by 2030. CEO Carlos Tavares heralded the move as part of a strategy that would transform the car company into a “sustainable mobility tech company,” with business growth coming from features and services tied to the internet. That includes using voice commands to activate navigation, make payments and order products online. The company is expanding existing partnerships with BMW on partially automated driving, iPhone manufacturer Foxconn on customized cockpits and Waymo to push their autonomous driving work into light commercial vehicle delivery fleets. StellantisÂ’ embrace of artificial intelligence and expansion of software-enabled vehicles is part of a broad transformation in the auto industry, with a race toward more fully electric and hybrid propulsion systems, more autonomous driving features and increased connectivity in automobiles. Ford and General Motors also are banking on dramatically increased revenue from similar online subscription services. But the automakers face immense competition for monthly consumer spending from movie and music streaming services, news outlets, Amazon Prime and others. Stellantis, which was formed from the combination of PSA Peugeot and FCA Fiat Chrysler, said the software would seamlessly integrate into customers' lives, with the capability of live updates providing upgraded services over time. New products will include the possibility to subscribe to automated driving features, purchase usage-based car insurance or even increase the power of the vehicle with a tune-up to add horsepower. As a baseline, Stellantis generates 400 million euros in revenue on software-generated services installed in 12 million vehicles. To meet the targets, Stellantis will expand its software engineering team of 1,000 to 4,500 in North America, Asia and Europe. More than 1,000 of the expanded team will be retrained in house. Stellantis also announced a new partnership with Foxconn to develop semiconductors to cover 80% of the companyÂ’s needs and simplify the supply chain. The first microchips from the partnership are targeted to be installed in vehicles in 2024.
