Ferrari reveals sold-out LaFerrari Spider

Tue, Jul 5 2016

Ferrari's current supercar king, the LaFerrari, is a few years old, so naturally, now is the time to debut a more exclusive and expensive variant. Enter the LaFerrari Spider. Ferrari tweeted an image of the new car this morning. Rumors of a convertible LaFerrari have circled for years, though this is the first time the car was seen by the public. It will debut in the flesh this fall at the Paris Motor Show. Earlier this year, the company showed the convertible to potential customers at a private event. Reaction was so strong, the car sold out almost immediately. The droptop is estimated to cost $1.4 million, 40-percent more than the standard version. About 150 to 200 cars will be built, far fewer than the run of 499 for the original. The 949-horsepower, 6.3-liter hybrid V12 will remain in place, and Ferrari says the chassis and aerodynamics were modified to maintain performance. It will offer carbon-fiber and soft tops. Although the LaFerrari Spider most likely won't usurp the Bugatti Veyron and as the fastest convertible, it will still be one of the fastest and rarest cars in the world. Race recap: 2015 Singapore Grand Prix full of odd sideshows

Mon, Sep 21 2015

What greeted the Formula One teams in Singapore? Confusion. The haze was so thick that observers wondered if the race would be held at all. Then practices began, and Mercedes-AMG Petronas driver Nico Rosberg took the first one, but the team fell away after that. Mercedes said it couldn't get the tires turned on, but no one believed the Silver Arrows was in genuine trouble. Then qualifying set the confusion in stone. Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel laid down the best time in Q3, taking the team's first pole position since Germany in 2012. Daniel Ricciardo got his Infiniti Red Bull Racing into second, about one tenth behind Vettel. (That may make the team feel better after Ricciardo publicly asked for a better engine than the current Renault unit, and team advisor Helmut Marko said the outfit will quit F1 at the end of this year if it can't get a stronger powerplant for 2016.) Kimi Raikkonen put the second Ferrari in third, Daniil Kvyat put the second Red Bull in fourth. And only then came the Meredes'. Lewis Hamilton's best got him fifth, the Brit saying, "We don't really know what we have got wrong. For some reason the tires are not working on the car. We do the warm-up the same as everyone else and then you see someone one second up the road." For added emphasis on the reversal of fortune, his time was 1.6 seconds behind Vettel's. Teammate Rosberg is next to him in sixth, a further half a second back. Williams is still a hurting a bit on slow tracks, so Valtteri Bottas could only get into seventh ahead of Max Verstappen in the Toro Rosso and teammate Felipe Massa in ninth. When the red lights went out, the 2015 Singapore Grand Prix would get both less interesting and more interesting all the way to the final lap. The men up front got good getaways, and the order into Turn 1 was Vettel, Ricciardo, and Raikkonen. The race finished with those three in that order, never having conceded position. Vettel's Ferrari enjoyed the track so much that he laid a second per lap into Ricciardo for the first five, then relaxed. He'd let the gap come down later in the race a couple of times, but any time he wanted to see what his mirrors looked like without anyone in them he'd take off again. Rosberg took fourth position after holding down sixth for the first stint. It looked like he'd have an even worse day - for a Mercedes driver - when he had problems getting his car started and onto the grid before the race.

Jay Leno gets five of Ferrari's greatest hits together for an epic track day

Tue, Nov 8 2016

America's favorite car guy, Jay Leno, isn't a huge fan of Ferrari. But even he can't stop from gushing over five of Ferrari's greatest cars. Thanks to David Lee, a Ferrari collector and watch dealer, Leno got to drive a Ferrari LaFerrari around a track with the Enzo, F50, F40, and 288 GTO close behind. The short five-minute clip has Leno driving conservatively behind the wheel of the LaFerrari and cautiously enjoying the supercar's 950-horsepower hybrid powertrain. Lee brings up the rear of the Ferrari train in his 288 GTO, while his brothers took the other three Italian supercars onto the track for a leisurely drive. Lee, who is an avid Ferrari collector that brought Leno his 1967 275 GTB4 to drive earlier this year, drives these Ferraris regularly and is extremely passionate about the brand. Despite not being one of Ferrari's biggest fans, Leno has nothing but good things to say about the LaFerrari. The five Ferraris are some of the most sought-after vehicles of all time, and for good reason. The supercars represent the best that Ferrari could do at each of those moments in time. Though it looks like Leno and Lee are going painstakingly slow, they're surrounded by an estimated value of $12 million worth of Italian metal. With a new season of Jay Leno's Garage set to premiere tomorrow at 10 p.m. Eastern Time on CNBC, we're expecting more more footage from this Ferrari fest.
