Watch a vintage Ferrari racing engine shoot blue flames on a dyno
Tue, Feb 7 2017It is exactly the kind of winter Tuesday that absolutely requires a three-liter Ferrari flat-12 screaming at almost 10,000 rpm. In case you have been looking for such footage, you are in luck: here is about a minute's worth of a Ferrari racing engine liberated from its chassis, revving its guts out. There are blue flames and wonderful sounds – it's perfect. The dyno numbers in the end show the 312B2 reaching 365 horsepower, and BangShift notes that it's most likely an endurance engine build, engineered to withstand use for a lot longer than the 1970s F1 races lasted. As the engine builder, Carobu Engineering says, it is "a standard rebuild on an existing engine platform with no additional modifications for power. The primary consideration was reliability and clean running. While not the most powerful vintage F1 engine, it has been very reliable and smooth." Carobu's video commentary also says that the engine was originally received with broken timing gears when they first rebuilt it years ago. The first build produced 289 horsepower at 9000 rpm, and the second rebuild made 365 horsepower at 9800 rpm thanks to improved injection system tuning and ignition optimization. Romania's Forza Rossa to join 2016 F1 grid
Tue, Nov 4 2014Bazac's Maranello ties have prompted speculation that Forza Rossa could be as closely affiliated with Ferrari as Hass. Formula One may be in a bit of a crisis at the moment, with two of its smaller teams collapsing into bankruptcy, but there may yet be light at the end of the proverbial tunnel as two new teams are gearing up to take their place. One of those teams is Forza Rossa, and while we haven't much anything about the Romanian entry in in recent months, a new report from Pitpass indicates that plans are well under way – if not without their complications. Forza Rossa is being backed by a number of Romanian parties, including veteran race strategist Colin Kolles (who was most recently involved in the Caterham buyout) and Ion Bazac, former government minister and Ferrari's Romanian importer (pictured above next to Giancarlo Fisichella). Interestingly, the latter's ties to Maranello have prompted speculation that the team could be at least as closely affiliated with Ferrari as Haas (the American team being started by industrial machinery magnate and NASCAR team owner Gene Haas). A third Romanian individual – former soccer player Constantin Cojocar – turns out to have been the one who bought Caterham Sports Ltd, the company which designed and built the cars for the Caterham F1 Team until its recent collapse. The plan was to supply chassis and components to both Caterham and Forza Rossa, but Cojocar evidently had trouble paying the bills and keeping the lights on. Caterham's bankruptcy, however, could present a golden opportunity for Forza Rossa to scoop up the assets of both the team and the manufacturer at a good price, building the new team on the burnt foundations of the old one – even if it has already been granted the go-ahead by the FIA to form its own entry. That, however, won't happen until 2016 at the earliest, whittling down the grid in the meantime from 22 cars to 18. According to the arrangement between the FIA, Formula One Management and the teams, that threshold would oblige at least the leading teams to make up the lost places on the grid by fielding a third car each – something they couldn't prepare in time for US Grand Prix this past weekend, but which could be put into action for next season.
Le Mans-raced 1953 Ferrari 340/375 MM headed to auction
Sat, 09 Feb 2013Vintage Ferrari models show up on the auction circuit all the time, but few can match this particular '53 340/375 MM Berlinetta Competizione in terms of historical significance. Not only did the machine compete in the 1953 24 Hours of Le Mans, but this particular model managed to finish in second place before being disqualified for taking on extra brake fluid during a stop. More importantly, a total of three Formula One world champions have driven this car in competition at events like the Spa 24 Hours, Pescara 12 Hours and the Circuit of Guadeloupe.
The coolest part for us? Umberto Maglioli managed to set a public road stage record with this machine during the Carrera Panamericana by averaging 138 miles per hour over 223 miles. The effort was good enough to land the team a sixth place finish overall, and the record still stands to this day for any road stage anywhere. The 340/375 MM Berlinetta Competizione is up for auction in restored condition at the RM Auction event in Paris this week. Check out the full press release below for more information.
