Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2 are its most powerful road cars of all time
Tue, Sep 18 2018Ferrari just pulled the wraps off the limited-edition Monza SP1 and SP2, and successfully reminded the world that it still knows how to make a jaw-dropping car. We saw the supercars and learned a few details about them earlier today when someone posted pictures on Instagram from a private Ferrari event. Now we have all the details and official photos from Ferrari. Providing the thrust is the most powerful engine Ferrari has ever built for a road car. It took the 6.5-liter V12 from the 812 Superfast and eked out a few more ponies to get it to 809 horsepower and 530 pound-feet of torque. Ferrari says that's good for a 0-62 run in 2.9 seconds - oh yeah, there's no windshield either. The SP1 is a one-seater and the SP2 is logically a two-seater. They were designed to take us back down Ferrari's memory lane, namely those of the 1940s and 1950s era where the name "barchetta" grew from. In decidedly not-old news, though, both are made of carbon fiber and go over 186 mph. They're light, but not crazily so with the SP1 coming in at 3,307 pounds. The pair are also part of a new segment Ferrari is calling 'Icona,' which, as you may have guessed, translates to Icon. Ferrari thinks it solved the windshield delete issue too. Apparently the fairing ahead of the steering wheel and instrument panel is designed to disrupt part of the airflow when traveling at speed. We'd imagine a helmet might still be the smart option though. Ferrari only plans to build 500 of these cars and hasn't publicly announced a price, but it's safe to assume that they won't be cheap and your chances of snapping one up are slim to none. Ferrari V6 hybrid said to arrive in May with as much as 723 horsepower
Thu, Mar 14 2019Ferrari has five debuts planned this year, one of which we've seen in the F8 Tributo. The next four will add to and update the mid-engined sports car range as well as the front-engined GT range. Car magazine thinks it has a bead on the long-awaited Ferrari six-cylinder engine that will sit in the middle of some new sports car definitely not named Dino. According to Car's sources, the 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 works up 610 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque by itself. Given plug-in hybrid assistance and an e-motor between the engine and transmission, the numbers grow to 723 hp and almost 800 lb-ft. The magazine says there's also room for an e-motor powering the front axle "at a later stage." Since Ferrari CEO Louis Camillieri nixed the Dino name, it's said the moniker 486 could get a call-up when Ferrari reveals the powerplant, expected to happen in May. We just need to see where that engine is going to go, since the carmaker's V8 hybrid is also due this year, and also rumored for a May reveal. The V8 hybrid will fit inside a new flexible platform and power a mid-engined model above the 710-hp F8 Tributo in the range and more profitable than the 812Superfast. The F8 Tributo sits on a heavily updated version of the 488 platform, which itself was a heavily updated version of the 458 platform from 2009. The new mid-engined model will focus on track performance. Ferrari has confirmed that its new mid-mounted platform will be able to adopt the V6 family. The brand's SVP of commercial and marketing, Enrico Galliera, told Australia's WhichCar, "So the technology we are going to have, V12, V8, V6 turbo. Hybrid will give us the possibility to have a platform that we can mix to achieve emissions targets." Since the other three Ferrari debuts are predicted to be in the GT and ultra-luxe categories, it's possible the V6 will introduce an entry-level option for a model like the Portofino. Or it could grace a new, more traditional model. There's a new "front-engine hybrid architecture for host of new cars, including Purosangue SUV," the SUV not due now until 2022. Galliera also told WhichCar, "We are developing some products that are designed to give the same emotion as a Ferrari." They will be sports cars, "but with this design that it is more elegant that is more for everyday driving in order to attract those people that maybe are not considering to buy a Ferrari, because they are not willing to have a highly sporty car.
Toyo Tires will bring another wild catalog of rides to SEMA
Sun, Oct 27 2019Toyo Tires carts all kinds of toys to SEMA every year, the rubber company planning another 30 or so automotive exhibits this year in two locations. One of them, the Baja 911, comes with a pedigree not usually associated with the bewildering wares hawked at the Las Vegas show. TJ Russell was once lead fabricator for Singer Vehicle Design, now he's the head of Russell Built Fabrication in Sun Valley, CA. Sticking with the marque he knows well, Russell started with a 1991 Porsche Carrera 4 cabriolet, fitted the interior with a full roll cage, then built a hardtop around it to design a desert runner channeling the old Rothmans safari 911s. Underneath that bodywork lives a box-plate trailing arm suspension with 12 inches of travel, working 15-inch Fifteen52 FIA-approved Gravel wheels and 30-inch Toyo Open Country A/T II tires. Power comes from a purpose-built 3.8-liter air-cooled flat-six with about 350 horsepower — 100 hp more than stock — in a car that weighs 400 pounds less than the original. Oh, and as documented on Instagram with the tagline "All race outside, all business inside," the interior's full of quilted, cross-stitched leather, and Toyo says Russell's going to do a low-volume run of the Baja 911 starting early next year. ruffian-ford-mustang-sema-01 View 10 Photos Chris Ashton built a 1970 Ford Mustang Fastback called the Ruffian Mustang, inspired by the Trans Am Racing Series. The exterior changes are more subtle than one might think – the chin spoiler, hood scoop, and side mirrors are barely exaggerated versions of those on the original car, the intake vents astride the front lights and the steel bumpers teleported from 1970. Changes outside include de-chromed and flush-mounted glass, vented hood, front fenders that are dropped an inch, rear fender vents, dual side-exit pipes, and gargantuan fender flares over staggered Signature One wheels and Toyo Proxes 888 tires. The interior's fitted with a roll cage and race car workings. In spite of the Boss 427 badging, the engine's a 625-hp Chevrolet LS3 V8. button-built-ferrari-355-sema-01 View 13 Photos The Button Built Ferrari BB355TT picks up from last year's stanced BB328GTS widebody that gave many Internet denizens heart attacks. Laid up on a 1999 355 Berlinetta, the BB version appends a widebody kit designed Mitchell Button, rendered by Khyzyl Saleem and drenched in Azzuro la Plata, a color from Ferrari's Scagliette palette first used on a 1967 275GTB Le Mans racer.
