Well-maintained 6-speed Modena Coupe on 2040-cars
Emeryville, California, United States
1999 Ferrari 360 Modena
Part of a long line of compact mid-engined Ferraris dating back to the legendary 206 and 246 Dino, the F360 Modena bristled with innovative technology upon its introduction. The biggest news was undoubtedly the decision to switch to an aluminum chassis, which increased rigidity by 40% while simultaneously decreasing weight by 28% over the outgoing 355. The engine in the 360 was slightly larger and more powerful, displacing 3.6 liter and producing 400hp, providing a 0-60 time of 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 189mph. In short, the car is everything that modern Ferrari should be: fast, exotic, visually arresting, and an outstanding driver’s car. Most cars were equipped with the F1 paddle shift gearbox with electronically actuated clutch, though a few examples were fitted with conventional gated shifter 6-speed manual transmissions. This particular example has been well maintained and is nicely equipped with 6-speed transmission, challenge grille and fender shields. In recent years, it has belonged to two California owners who have maintained the car at the same shop, Stewart’s Automotive in Sacramento, California. The car has a new battery and also received new rear rotors and pads 500 miles ago. Additionally, the exhaust manifolds and ABS module were also replaced, which are common failure points on these cars. The invoices show regular preventative maintenance and the occasional other fix (new wiper switch, alternator cable etc.), as well as a new clutch at 31,000 miles and a belt service at 35,000 miles in May of 2008. Consequently, the car is due for a belt service at this time. Miscellaneous service records go back as far as 9000 miles showing that the car has been properly cared for. Cosmetically, the car makes a strong impression and is certainly impactful as only a yellow Ferrari can be. The paintwork is generally good, with a few scuffs and scrapes to the front bumper and one significant blemish in the front bumper that has damage to the paint but has not punctured the bumper cover and could be remedied without replacing the bumper. The paintwork is otherwise attractive and presentable and the car has clear bra to protect various areas of the paintwork as well as the headlamps. The lights and glass are excellent and the wheels are excellent overall with small areas of curb rash on each right wheel and none on the left wheels. The interior is generally in excellent shape other than the typical stickiness to some of the plastic trims on the interior, which is common on Ferraris of this era. The leather is excellent across the board, which minimal wear to the driver’s seat bolster. The dashboard is very good, with minor shirinkage around the defroster vents only. The carpets are excellent and the contrasting yellow stitching looks very smart. The engine compartment and trunk are both unmodified and clean, as befits a well-cared for and properly maintained car. The trunk is surprisingly capacious. The car is fitted with Quicksilver exhaust, which is well made and impressive-sounding. The car is complete with spare tire kit, tools, and books. This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a well-maintained and complete example of a usable high performance modern Ferrari. It has a clean Carfax and although it is due for a belt service by time, it has been properly maintained and comes with a thick file of service records, as well as books and tools. It has few modifications and has escaped the invasive changes from which these cars sometimes suffer. Furthermore, it is a 6-speed example, which is a more effective solution than the early F1 gearboxes used in Ferraris of this period. TERMS AND CONDITIONS: This car is sold AS IS without warranty. Ferrari California T gets sharper edge with Handling Speciale package
Fri, Jan 22 2016It's been about two years since Ferrari updated the California to T-spec with a 3.9-liter, flat-plane crank, twin-turbocharged engine, and we found it to be a suitable change – rewarding to drive, and compelling to experience. Now Ferrari has introduced a new handling option, which will debut at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in March, which should add a sharper edge to the roadster. Like most handling packages, the springs and dampers get the most attention. The magnetorheological dampers fitted to the conventional California T get changes that increase their response time to changing road conditions. As before, damper settings are controlled via the steering wheel manettino, and the most aggressive change is to be found in the Sport setting. The front springs are stiffer – 16 percent up front, 19 percent in the rear – which will aid body control in all axes. Ferrari claims that, overall, the setup only marginally reduces the ride comfort. It'll take driving a Handling Speciale-equipped car to find out. The changes go beyond just handling hardware. Shifts are faster in Sport mode, both in automatic and manual modes, thanks to recalibrated transmission logic. Ferrari's engineers also found some additional corner exit speed by tweaking the F1-Trac stability control system's programming. The company claims this tweak also helps with acceleration on bumpy surfaces. Cosmetically, the California Ts with the Handling Speciale package will feature a matte grille, a rear diffuser with matte-painted fences, and matte black tailpipes. A special-edition plaque, located in the cabin, is also standard, Finally, in a very Italian move, the exhaust note has been recalibrated "to underline the performance gains." That is to say, if you don't happen to have a skidpad handy to do a direct measurement of the increase in cornering capability – which, it should be noted, Ferrari doesn't quantify – the sportier sound will serve as a psychological reminder. There's no claim that the new exhaust system changes the engine's output – cars so equipped make the same 553 hp at 7500 RPM as the model we tested back in 2014. Look for the Handling Speciale package to debut at the Geneva Motor Show.
The limited-run Ferrari J50 is the coolest 488 Spider you can't buy
Tue, Dec 13 2016Ferrari is really good at celebrating things. In recognition of 50 years of selling cars in Japan, the company is building a few one-off versions of the 488 Spider, called the J50. That's our kind of anniversary present. Just 10 of these cars will be built, and each will be customized to the taste of its owner. The J50 gets a 681-horsepower version of the 488's 3.9-liter twin-turbo V8 and of course wraps it all in different bodywork. The interior gets some custom attention as well, with different trim but most of the normal parts from the 488 Spider. It's not shown here, but there's a two-piece carbon-fiber targa roof that stows behind the seats and is supported by the matte carbon roll hoops. Design highlights include a polycarbonate bubble over the engine, a channel that wraps the front end and the sides, a chopped windshield and side glass, and a fantastic looking rear diffuser. The front end reminds us of some old GM aero concepts, but in the best way possible. If you want one, you're probably already too late. Ferrari likely offered these to its best Japanese customers before the car was even unveiled. You have 50 years to save up for the next one; better luck next time. One more LaFerrari will be built to benefit Italian earthquake victims
Wed, Aug 31 2016Today, Ferrari Chairman and CEO Sergio Marchionne announced that the company was planning to build one more Ferrari LaFerrari coupe in order to raise money for victims of the earthquake that struck central Italy last week, killing nearly 300 people. Production of the car officially ended in 2015, with 499 examples produced, though preparations for the LaFerrari Spider are in the works. The 500th LaFerrari will be auctioned off, though no word on when the car will go on sale. The lucky owner will take home the most powerful and expensive road-car the Italian automaker has ever produced. The LaFerrari, which sold for $1.3 million, makes 949 horsepower from its V12 hybrid system. It remains, and mostly likely will remain for quite some time, one of the quickest vehicles on the planet.
