Italian police foil plot to snatch Enzo Ferrari's body

Italian authorities on Tuesday said they had foiled a plot to steal the body of automotive legend Enzo Ferrari. That's Enzo Ferrari the man, not Ferrari Enzo Ferrari the supercar. Ferrari died in 1988 at age 90. He founded the company that produces some of the world's fastest and most expensive cars. Police in Nuoro on the island of Sardinia told a news conference that a gang had planned to snatch the body and demand a ransom from the Ferrari family or the company, Reuters and Italian news outlets reported. Authorities said the plot was discovered during an investigation into arms and drug trafficking. Helicopters and parachute regiment officers were used to execute 34 arrest warrants. Ferrari's body is interred above ground in a family mausoleum in Modena, near the Ferrari plant at Maranello in central Italy. Gang members had allegedly conducted several inspections of the burial site to plan the operation. The Ferrari founder has been in the news a lot recently. LaFerrari racing prototype spotted in Southern Europe

Rumors have been circulating for a few months now that Ferrari could be gearing up to challenge for outright victory at Le Mans once again with an LMP1 racer of its own. First the head of the sports racing division hinted at the prospect, then the head of the Formula One team lent it more credence, and most recently, the chairman of the company itself confirmed the possibility. We've even heard some rumors over who could drive the thing. But what we haven't seen yet is any solid proof that the Prancing Horse marque has actually been working on such a racecar.
That could be what we're looking at it here, but then again, it might not be. Spied undergoing testing in Southern Europe, this camouflaged test mule appears to be based on the new LaFerrari supercar, but with some key modifications that indicate this isn't the road-going version. The revised aero is a dead giveaway, with that giant front splitter jutting out like a swollen lip and a massive rear wing protruding from the back. The headlights are different, it's got center-lock wheels fitted at each corner and there's a big snorkel air scoop protruding from the engine bay.
What's clear is that this is test mule has definitely been set up for the race track. The only question is, to what end? Even with all the add-ons, it's still nowhere near as extreme as the purpose-built prototypes that Audi, Toyota and Porsche will be fielding in the FIA World Endurance Championship this year, and it's missing key features like the mandatory center tailfin. It could be a platform for testing components to use on an upcoming LMP1, but if not for the aforementioned Le Mans rumors, our money would have been on something else - be it a GT racing version of LaFerrari like Maserati did with the Enzo-based MC12, or a customer track toy to follow in the footsteps of the (also Enzo-based) FXX and the 599XX that followed.

Massive cruise ship features Ferrari go-kart track

Billed as the first racetrack at sea, a Ferrari-themed circuit will sit atop Norwegian Cruise Lines' newest vessel, the Norwegian Joy, launching this summer. The two-level track will have room for 10 electric go-karts, and it's built in partnership with Scuderia Ferrari Watches. The barriers are red with the Prancing Horse crest displayed prominently. The track will be laid out on the top level of the Joy, offering racers a view of the sea as they turn laps. Ferrari watches will also be sold in a retail shop near the track as part of the deal. The cruise line announced plans for the circuit last year and now is confirming the Ferrari theme. Ferrari is expanding its marketing efforts with clothing, watches, Ferrari World Theme parks, and other lifestyle experiences as it positions itself as a global luxury brand. Ferrari hopes the moves expand its base beyond traditional automotive enthusiasts, who flock to the brand for its success on the track and for its high-performance sports cars. The Joy is designed specifically for the Chinese market and will have room for 3,850 passengers. Guests in certain classes will get free rides on the Ferrari track as part of their accommodations. The ship will also have a racing simulator, multi-story waterslides, and open-air laser tag. The Joy will be delivered Thursday in Germany, and its home ports will be Shanghai and Tianjin.
