The Dodge Demon's massive hood scoop sucks air like a jet intake
Thu, Feb 9 2017You know what they say about cars with big hood scoops? They usually hide big blowers. At least that's the case with the Dodge Demon and its 45-inch wide hood scoop, the largest ever fitted to a factory production car. The fifth Demon teaser, "Forced Induction," shows off the increased capacity of the car's air intake and the resurrection of the Air Grabber hood scoop on Dodge's upcoming quarter-mile killer. View 4 Photos As with previous teasers, few details have been given outside of the Subaru-trouncing scoop's dimensions. Dodge says the scoop drops air inlet temperatures by more than 30 degrees. Where the more pedestrian Hellcat only has one air catcher headlight, both inner lights on the Demon are used to feed in air. The hood itself appears to channel air in and to the right into a new airbox that appears to be fitted with a K&N-style filter. Dodge seems intent on preventing any asthma issues with the new car. Standing in front of the car might literally take your breath away. Outside of that, the images don't show any new cryptic messages like previous teasers, or at least none that we can spot. One thing we did notice was that the engine block appears to be painted red, not orange like on the Hellcat. Doing some back and forth comparison also shows that the supercharger appears to be the same size as the current one. Of course, this is all speculative, so if you spot anything, drop a note in the comments. Related Video:
Dodge Viper now available in matte finish
Tue, Jun 23 2015The prospect of buying a new Dodge Viper just got that much more enticing with the introduction of matte-finish paint direct from the factory. Available as part of the "1 of 1" customization program, the matte finishes aren't being offered in just a handful of colors like some other automakers do: customers will be able to specify a matte finish on any of the 8,000 colors that are already part of the program's palette. The matte finish option adds yet another step to the exhaustive hand-painting process that Dodge offers on the Viper - a painstaking endeavor that takes upwards of 145 man hours to complete. Specialists start by applying a base coat and a clear finish, followed by the paint and clear coat. The finished body panels are then smoothed with 1,000-grit paper and polished. A second sanding process is required for the matte finish before the application of a matte clear coat. Specify custom stripes (available in five colors or by custom order) and they're applied under the paint, not as decals on top. The availability of the matte finish in conjunction with the stripe options and new satin badging and fuel cap leads to over 50 million combinations. Needless to say, that means no two Vipers need ever leave the Conner Avenue assembly plant the same – though there will surely always be certain favorite combinations, especially on those units ordered from outside the customization program. Watch a Dodge Viper driver show off his V10 all the way into a wall
Mon, Apr 11 2016Has there ever been a show-off video that doesn't end terribly? This video clip captured with a cellphone shows the driver of a neon green Viper GTS giving a fellow motorist a couple throttle blips to signify his intent – which seems to be to crash the Viper into a concrete wall as quickly as possible. It's not pretty. The mean machine seems to be a second-generation Viper GTS in Stryker Green. To our knowledge, no photos have surfaced of the aftermath, so we wish both the driver and their most-likely bruised ego a speedy recovery. Who knows, maybe the Viper is also salvageable.
