Fiat/PSA's dominance in small vans hangs up EU's merger approval

Mon, Jun 8 2020

BRUSSELS — EU antitrust regulators are concerned about Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot / PSA's combined high market share in small vans and may require concessions to clear their $50 billion merger, people familiar with the matter said. The companies, which are seeking to create the world's fourth biggest carmaker, were told of the European Commission's concerns last week. If Fiat and PSA fail to dispel the European Commission's doubts in the next two days and subsequently decline to offer concessions by Wednesday, the deadline for doing so, the deal would face a four-month-long investigation. The EU competition enforcer, which has set a June 17 deadline for its preliminary review, declined to comment. Fiat was not immediately available for comment while PSA had no immediate comment. Hiving off overlapping businesses, usually a regulatory demand to ensure more competition, could prove tricky for the carmakers because of the technicalities. Fiat and PSA are looking to merge to help offset slowing demand and shoulder the cost of making cleaner vehicles to meet tougher emissions regulations. The deal puts under one roof the Italian carmaker's brands such as Fiat, Jeep, Dodge, Ram, Maserati and the French company's Peugeot, Opel and DS. Takata air bag recall list

Tue, Dec 9 2014

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration confirmed yesterday that 33.8 million vehicles with Takata airbags are going to be recalled. It's the largest recall in automotive history. The already record-breaking rate of automotive recalls this year shows no signs of slowing down, especially since millions of cars with defective airbags made by global supplier Takata are under ongoing scrutiny. The federal government is warning owners that inflator mechanisms in the air bags can rupture, causing metal fragments to fly out when the bags are deployed. The faulty air bags have already been blamed for multiple deaths. How do you know if your vehicle is safe? The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released an updated list of vehicles under recall. Sometimes however, the government's website will crash and the list may not be complete. Check your VIN at the NHTSA website to make sure. The list of cars affected by the recall has not been released, but seem to span multiple models over the years for many of the automakers.

Will the Dodge Demon do a 10-second quarter-mile?

Fri, Apr 7 2017

The final teaser for the Dodge Demon is finally here, and it might just give us a clue as to how quick the new car really is. A brief glimpse at a time slip shows what might be a 10-second quarter-mile time. That's a significant step up from the standard Hellcat's 11.7 seconds, but considering all of the Demon's modifications, it's not an unreasonable time. The new video, "Judgment Day," shows the new Demon in its natural habitat, a quarter-mile drag strip. There isn't much new information, aside from the brief glimpse at a time slip. There is a good shot of the car in action and some nice audio from what we assume is a supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi. For comparison, the new 2016 Chevrolet COPO Camaro is capable of a 10.7-second quarter-mile run, while the 2016 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet dips all the way down into the 8s. The full reveal is less than a week away. Look for more information, including the long-awaited horsepower rating, next week during our coverage of the 2017 New York Auto Show.
