This truck is a real story.
Originally, it was a Factory Built 440 4bbl shortbed 1/2 ton 2wd Sweptside.
It came with the SE package and just about every option available including
Air Conditioning, Cruise, Tilt, Stereo, light package including Cargo light,
and a two tone paint procedure in Medium Canyon Sunfire Red metallic
with a Bright silver Band and roof, and 15 inch chrome wheels. 5x7 Chrome mirrors
(replaced with 3 points) and Bumper guards.

1978 was the last year for these little known hotrod shortbeds.
A well promoted, expert wrote in a little white book that they only made
74 for of them for the previous year. There are no known 78 figures.
The 5th character in the VIN designates the 440 motor with a D.
The door VIN tag is present, as is the trim tag on the Radiator core
support, showing the two paint codes, the 115 inch wheelbase
and the complete VIN. The cert label is gone.

So what happened to this truck?

The story goes, a previous owner wanted to get his sheep to the
market ahead of anyone else. He scrapped the original bed and custom
built the flatbed. Must have been a crazy ride for the sheep.

He sold it to the next guy that had something different in mind. The next
owner was a diesel fan and found an original 78 Dodge with the rare
Mitsubishi built diesel. He swapped motors and left the original 440
with a machine shop. Very few of the Mitsu Diesel Dodges were made
some of the original paperwork from the donor truck is still in the glove box.
The diesel conversion is really a bolt in swap, using even the original
radiator, and tranny. It runs like a top. Total miles are unknown.
The mechanic that did the swap was a tractor tech guy and got sidelined
before he installed an electric shutoff. It has a pull strap that shuts
off the fuel.

It is probably the most reliable old truck in my collection! Starts every
time and just sits there and clatters away. The mitsus bolted to the
Stock 727 and the original engine perches. This thing runs and drives.
That said, it should be inspected by a shop before driving any distance.

I was able to get the original motor from the machine shop, but it is stuck.
(no turn) I have already tried the usual oils, penetrants, and miracle cures.
It's stuck, so it should be considered junk, sorry. I have not opened it.

It will be tarped and well secured on the flatbed for transport.
The truck is missing whatever you don't see in the pics. Most notably
most of the AC and 440 components. The original trans is in and shifts
and goes into reverse.

The truck is very solid. The front fenders and hood were replaced with some
nice straight metal I had in the same color. The floors are about as nice as they come
and the roof is solid. The frame has scale but is also solid. You are looking at original
paint, (faded)

As the pictures show, every aspect of this truck needs restoration, the interior
is torn and tattered, the dash is chaulky, (see pics) or ask for more.

Please ask questions except re: reserve
I also have an album with a bunch more pictures need your email
to send the album.

Buy it now requires a 500$ non refundable deposit via paypal.

This would be one of the most amazing, of the Few 440 shorties out there,
if it were restored to it's original glory.

Junkyard Gem: 1977 Dodge Colt Mileage Maker Coupe

Sat, Dec 11 2021

While Ford and GM each had the resources to develop their own Michigan-designed subcompacts for the dawn of the 1970s— the Pinto and Vega, respectively— Chrysler couldn't afford the huge price tag for such a project. Instead, Chrysler's European operations were tapped for a couple of models that sold well enough on the other side of the Atlantic, giving us the Plymouth Cricket (known as the Hillman Avenger in the UK) and the Simca 1204 (aka the Simca 1100 in France). American car shoppers gave those two models the cold shoulder, but then Chrysler found genuine sales success by making a deal with Mitsubishi to sell the Colt Galant with left-hand drive. This became the Dodge Colt, with sales beginning in the 1971 model year. Though the 1971-1978 rear-wheel-drive Colts were once as commonplace as Corollas or B210s on American roads, they have all but disappeared today. That makes today's Junkyard Find, discovered in a Denver-area yard last week, particularly interesting. This car shows signs of having been in the hands of a speed-crazed enthusiast owner, including an aftermarket steering wheel and one-piece racing seats with slots for five-point harnesses. The primer-gray paint is another clue. The rear-wheel-drive Colts were reasonably quick for their time, and they could be made genuinely quick with basic engine upgrades. This Mitsubishi Saturn four-banger has a tube header, hot-rod ignition system, and a two-barrel (Mikuni-made) Solex carburetor. We can assume there's probably some kind of cam upgrade under the valve cover, too. The shifter is gone, but the original transmission in this car was either the base four-speed or optional five-speed manual. A three-speed automatic was available for $270 (about $1,275 today). Later on, front-wheel-drive Colts (and Mitsubishi Mirages) could be bought with the Twin-Stick overdrive rig, which gave drivers eight forward speeds and the opportunity to make Twin-Stick beer taps. The 1977-1978 Dodge Colt two- and four-door sedans were based on the Mitsubishi Lancer and were a bit smaller than the 1971-1977 cars, while the wagon version moved to the Galant Sigma platform. The build tag shows that this car started life as the cheapest 1977 Colt model, the "Mileage Maker" two-door sedan (Dodge dealers called it a coupe, so that's what I'm calling it in the title).

Zombie cars: Discontinued vehicles that aren't dead yet

Thu, Jan 6 2022

Car models come and go, but as revealed by monthly sales data, once a car is discontinued, it doesn't just disappear instantly. And in the case of some models, vanishing into obscurity can be a slow, tedious process. That's the case with the 12 cars we have here. All of them have been discontinued, but car companies keep racking up "new" sales with them. There are actually more discontinued cars that are still registering new sales than what we decided to include here. We kept this list to the oldest or otherwise most interesting vehicles still being sold as new, including a supercar. We'll run the list in alphabetical order, starting with *drumroll* ... BMW 6 Series: 55 total sales BMW quietly removed the 6 Series from the U.S. market during the 2019 model year. It had been available in three configurations, a hardtop coupe, a convertible and a sleek four-door coupe-like shape.   BMW i8: 18 total sales We've always had a soft spot for the BMW i8, despite the fact that it never quite fit into a particular category. It was sporty, but nowhere near as fast as similarly-priced competitors. It looked very high-tech and boasted a unique carbon fiber chassis design and a plug-in hybrid powertrain, but wasn't really designed for maximum efficiency or maximum performance. Still, the in-betweener was very cool to look at and drive, and 18 buyers took one home over the course of 2021.   Chevy Impala: 750 total sales The Impala represented classic American tastes at a time when American tastes were shifting away from soft-riding sedans with big interior room and trunk space and into higher-riding crossovers. A total of 750 sales were inked last year.   Chrysler 200: 15 total sales The Chrysler 200 was actually a pretty nice sedan, with good looks and decent driving dynamics let down by a lack of roominess, particularly in the back seat. Of course, as we said regarding the Chevy Impala, the number of Americans in the market for sedans is rapidly winding down, and other automakers are following Chrysler's footsteps in canceling their slow-selling four-doors. Even if Chrysler never really found its footing in the ultra-competitive midsize sedan segment, apparently dealerships have a few leftover 2017 200s floating around. And for some reason, 15 buyers decided to sign the dotted line to take one of these aging sedans home last year.

2014 Dodge Journey Crossroad soldiers on in the Chi

Thu, 06 Feb 2014

Introduced to the market in 2008 and updated in 2011, the Dodge Journey crossover has had all the freshness of a retirement village in recent years. Filling a potentially important niche for Dodge as an affordable, family-sized vehicle, the Journey has gotten one last mild refresh here in Chicago. Feast your mild-appearance-package-loving eyes on the 2014 Dodge Journey Crossroad.
We can't be sure if the inspiration for the Crossroad appellation was the 2002 blockbuster film, Crossroads, starring Britney Spears, or the 1986 cult-classic, Crossroads, starring Ralph Macchio, but based on the CUV's newfound boyish charm, we're betting on the Karate Kid.
Dark finish 19-inch wheels, platinum chrome accents and a manly new front fascia tell the world that this isn't the Dodge Journey that they've long since forgotten about. In fairness, the Crossroad is easily the best-looking iteration of the Journey to date, and should be better to live with, too, considering its revised cabin, leather seats and standard Uconnect touchscreen infotainment system.
