1966 DODGE A-100 PICKUP

Trust me when I say I didn’t need another project, but …this one caught my eye primarily because the guy that started it was a helicopter A&P that paid meticulous attention to detail.  I am never going to find the time to see this one to completion, which I regret because it will end up to be a one of a kind for somebody with the time to take it on.  I always told myself that if I ever did another early project, the most important issues to address were the horrendous steering, brakes and suspension, and there could be no engine noise, smell, or heat in the cab, and this one just might fit the wish list and then some.  The prior owner had already grafted in the 91 Corvette C-4 front and rear suspension, fabricated the steering, and mocked-up the new brake booster location.  I always wanted an A-100, but to have front & rear IRS, 4-wheel discs, power steering, power brakes, already set-up for a 392 Hemi and a short tail 727 in a combination that should handle like a cat on Velcro was the reason I just couldn’t pass it up.

There is only one small spot of rust on the right side below the door that will require a 2” x 2” patch welded in, otherwise the truck is virtually rust free.  It was originally owned by the Telephone Company in Denver, and was retired with 33,000 (or 133,000!) on the odometer.  The original builder decided to convert the tailgate to a barn door setup using cut-down rear doors from a van.  Not the look I was after, and since the truck has a mint original tailgate, I fabbed the missing hinge support, and installed “hidden hinge” locks to eliminate the tailgate chains.  Another thing that has to go is the sunroof that was installed in the roof at some point.  These A-100s have a virtually flat roof, so putting it back right is not a big deal.  The best fix would be to fit a sliding ragtop – it’s fast, easy, and fairly cheap to do.

I have some very nice doghouse sheet metal which you’ll need to eventually fabricate the cab enclosure.  It comes with a brand new Corvette booster, master cylinder, combination valve, and the 4 braided hoses for the calipers.  The steering column is a brand new Speedway unit, and the finned aluminum dash insert is also included, but the Autometer gauges shown in the photo are NOT INCLUDED.  I have both the front and rear sway bars from a 91 Corvette, but I’ve never offered them up to see how they fit (the chassis rails are drilled and tapped for sway bars mounts).  It also comes with a rebuilt 727 small block tranny, and the world’s shortest custom made driveshaft.  The rear chrome bumper and the chrome grill are virtually perfect.  The front bumper was perfect, but somebody decided to pull the truck with a chain and the hook took its toll on the right side.  It can be easily repaired, but it looks like it was just re-chromed – what a shame.  I didn’t like the rear coil over lower mounting that was original done, so the truck comes with a proper set of mounts from the Street Rod Garage.  There are a bunch of spares that come with the truck including a couple of extra doors, and I think all the glass is there with the exception of the right side windshield (it’s flat glass, so getting one cut is easy).

While this looks like quite the project, once the brake lines are run, and the sway bars are fitted, the remainder of what’s needed is paint, interior, and reassembly.  Look, these trucks bring very good money even at the low end.  It doesn’t take long to see that a stock unit needing everything can be had in the $3k range, but that’s about as low as it goes.  By spending a little more for what you are getting, your project will be miles ahead both in time and the eventually money you’ll have to lay out to get it finished.  If you price out just a C-4 coil over conversion package, you’ll find out that will set you back over $2K alone, and all you’ve got to show for it is 4 shocks and some brackets!   This project does require a fairly good level of fabrication skill.  If your skills are lacking, this may not be the best choice.

It should go without saying, but this truck is a ROLLER.  There is NO ENGINE or TRANSMISIION in the vehicle and it will need to be TRANSPORTED to your location.

Study the pictures carefully and ASK ALL YOUR QUESTIONS PRIOR TO PURCHASING.  The truck has an open title from Colorado that matches the VIN plate, but the original owner never had his signature notarized.  It may take an extra few steps at your DMV, so do your due diligence BEFORE YOU BUY.  I’ll provide a bill of sale, and a statement of facts that the original owner cannot be located and is presumed deceased.  In most states, the worst case is that you’ll have to apply for a bonded title.

The winning bidder is responsible for all shipping costs and arrangements.  I will assist your carrier in loading at this end.

Please check with your significant other, your spiritual advisor, your neighbor, your parole officer, or that little voice in your head before you bid (if you hear more than one voice, please don’t bid). Scammers that want to overpay with a bank check are encouraged to give it a shot – the comedic value is priceless.  A $500.00 deposit is required via Paypal immediately.  The balance is payable in cash, or wire transfer within 3 days of auction close.  Vehicle need to be picked up within 2 weeks of auction close.  All funds must clear my bank before the vehicle leaves without exception.  Should go without saying but….the vehicle is sold AS IS, WHERE IS, AND IS WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND.  Only you can determine if it is suited for your intended use, and there are no returns or refunds under any circumstances.  You buy it, you own it.

Thanks for taking a look!

2015 Dodge Charger R/T Scat Pack Quick Spin

Thu, Jun 18 2015

"Scat Pack" is plucked from The Big Book of Dodge Nameplates to describe what is basically the average of the Charger R/T and Charger SRT 392. Unnecessary horsepower always seems to go down better with a dose of heritage. If you think it's a silly name, just be thankful Dodge didn't call it an S/RT or an R/T-S. In previous years, a similar formulation was known as the SRT8 Super Bee. Going by another name, it's still as sweet and wears the same hurried-looking pollinator on the grille. We do wonder: What has displeased him so, and why does he have wings and wheels? The packaging is at least fresh. All Chargers get updates for 2015, including improved interiors and a Dart-on-steroids exterior redo. The new lines work especially well on the more aggressive models, including this Scat Pack car. Like the Super Bee before it, the Scat Pack gets the 6.4-liter engine from SRT 392; for 2015 it gets a slight output boost to 485 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque, respective increases of 15 and 5. It does without the SRT three-mode suspension and comes with cloth seats (leather is an option) to keep the price down. The Scat Pack also has slightly smaller Brembo front brakes, narrower wheels, and different rubber. It does, however, cost eight grand less and is just as quick in a straight line. Intriguing. Driving Notes Scat Pack cars get an electronically controlled active exhaust that we'd call hyperactive. It's loud all the time, opening its widest at startup, idle, and when you ask for any appreciable amount of power. Sport mode supposedly makes a difference, but we couldn't discern loud from louder. It's a delicious and appropriate loudness, with a brassy trumpet tone to it, and the engine makes top-fuel noises at full tilt. The squeal of the rear tires can be heard from every stoplight no matter the road conditions. A light touch avoids leaving a mark if you're so inclined. We weren't. When the tires eventually smear into the realm of traction, this thing is pretty quick – hitting 60 miles per hour takes 4.5 seconds. There's also an adjustable launch control mode if you want to cut out some of the wheelspin. The eight-speed transmission shifts smoothly. Quicker, more-palpable shifts are had in Sport mode, but occasionally the transmission still needs a moment to drop down from seventh or eighth when you mash the throttle. Despite its two overdrive gears, this Charger is still loud on the highway. In a good way. Probably.

2019 Dodge Challenger Hellcat with twin-scoop hood spied with no camouflage

Mon, May 7 2018

Dodge recently teased an updated 2019 Challenger SRT Hellcat sports coupe complete with an all-new hood with dual scoops. It didn't reveal anything else about the vehicle, saying more details were coming. And now we have more details, but not in the way Dodge probably wanted. We can now see the updated Hellcat with the new hood. To be perfectly honest, it's pretty much what we expected. The teaser photos indicated that the hood was the only major body change, and this car confirms it. The rest of the body is identical to a normal Hellcat. The bumpers, grille mesh, even the wheels are all standard Hellcat parts. Even the slotted rotors and Brembo calipers look the same. This car does suggest that the hood will be available on both the narrow-body Hellcat and the Hellcat Widebody, the latter of which was featured in the teaser images. There is actually one other minor difference on this 2019 Hellcat's exterior, and that's the grille badging. There's now a vintage-style badge with "Challenger" written in script off to one side. Currently only one grille and badge design is available on Hellcat, and it features just the SRT Hellcat logo. It appears the SRT badge is still present, but blocked off on this prototype. So it's possible this new badge comes with the new hood as a sort of retro package for Hellcat. We should have all the details on this and other 2019 Challengers when the car is officially revealed later this summer. 2019 Dodge Challenger, Charger salute troops with Stars and Stripes Edition

Thu, Apr 11 2019

For the New York Auto Show, Dodge is showing off a new style package for the 2019 Dodge Challenger and Charger that goes by the name Stars and Stripes. As you may have guessed, the new package is military-themed as a salute to American troops. And since Dodge claims the Challenger and Charger have more active military buyers than any other car in their respective segments, this seems like a good move. What makes the Stars and Stripes models unique starts with a black and silver center stripe along with black wheels, badging, and American flag fender decals. Cars with four-piston Brembo brake calipers get the calipers painted in bronze. This matches the interior, which is finished in black cloth with bronze stitching everywhere from the steering wheel to the door panels. The finishing touches are bronze embroidered stars on the seats. The whole package is available on Scat Pack and R/T versions of the Challenger and Charger, plus the Challenger GT and the Charger GT RWD. It also adds $1,995 to the base price of each car. Besides the Stars and Stripes package, Dodge has expanded availability of two other packages. The first is the Painted Satin Black Appearance Package, which was initially exclusive to the Demon and Challenger Hellcat, but will now be available on the Charger Hellcat. It adds a hand-painted hood, roof, trunk and spoiler to the car and runs $3,450. The other package is the Brass Monkey Package. It's now available on Challenger and Charger Scat Pack, R/T and Challenger GT and Charger GT RWD models. It adds bronze-painted 20-inch wheels, satin black badging, fuel door lid and spoiler, and it costs $795.
