Hackers arrested after stealing more than 30 Jeeps in Texas

Fri, Aug 5 2016

This article has been updated with details on how the thefts were carried out, and with comments from FCA. It seems the news regarding vehicle hacking continues to get worse, especially when it comes to products from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. Last year, a Jeep Cherokee in St. Louis, Missouri, was wirelessly hacked from Pittsburgh. Nissan had to shut down its Leaf app because of vulnerabilities. Now, a pair of hackers in Houston, Texas, stole more than 30 Jeeps over a six-month period. The two were arrested by police last Friday while attempting to steal another vehicle. ABC 13 in Houston reports that police had been following Michael Arcee and Jesse Zelay for several months but were unable to catch them in the act until now. The two were using a laptop to connect to and start a vehicle. The thieves were able to access Fiat Chrysler's own DealerCONNECT software. After entering the vehicle identification number, the hackers were able to reprogram the cars' security systems to accept a generic key, according to The Houston Chronicle. Additionally, Automotive News reports that FCA subsequently updated the terms of use for its DealerCONNECT program. These thefts were not related to the UConnect remote hacks from last year. It was this footage that first led the police to Arcee and Zelay. The police began to follow and record the pair. That investigation eventually led to Friday's arrest. Both are charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. In addition, Arcee is charged with felon in possession of a weapon and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. According to ABC 13, Homeland Security is investigating more than 100 stolen FCA vehicles that they believe were hacked using this method. After their theft, the vehicles were brought across the border to Mexico. FCA is currently conducting an internal investigation into the matter. After this article was posted, the company reached out to Autoblog, stating "FCA US takes the safety and security of its customers seriously and incorporates security features in its vehicles that help to reduce the risk of unauthorized and unlawful access to vehicle systems and wireless communications. FCA US has been cooperating with Houston Police Department since they first started the investigation.

Final Dodge Demon and Dodge Viper to be auctioned off for charity

Fri, Apr 13 2018

A little while ago we wrote about the Viper factory being recommissioned into a museum, that will hold the historic cars originally evicted from the Walter P. Chrysler museum. Now, what happened to the last Viper that factory built? It's getting auctioned off, in good company. Barrett-Jackson is auctioning the last 2017 Viper built, together with a 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon said to be the last Demon produced. Crossing the block in June in Uncasville, Connecticut, the pair of cars produces a total of 1,485 horsepower, of which the Demon accounts for 840 horses and the Viper for 645. Both are finished in bright Viper Red, and yes, the Demon will include the optional passenger seat. All proceeds from the sale will go to charity, to United Way. "Pairing the last Dodge Challenger SRT Demon and the Dodge Viper production cars – two of America's most sought-after vehicles – under the roof of Barrett-Jackson gives someone the 'last' chance to own this unique piece of automotive history, and Dodge//SRT the opportunity to raise money for a cause close to our hearts", said FCA's Steve Beahm. In addition to the cars, the sale will include memorabilia and a Demon Crate, which includes narrow, drag-spec front tires, performance modules and track tools. The auction is held from June 20th to 23rd. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings. FCA CEO Mike Manley will run Americas for Stellantis after PSA merger

Sun, Dec 20 2020

DETROIT — Fiat Chrysler CEO Mike Manley will run operations in the Americas when his company merges with FranceÂ’s PSA Peugeot early next year. FCA Chairman John Elkann announced ManleyÂ’s new post on Friday in a letter to employees. ManleyÂ’s role in the merged company had been a mystery. PSA CEO Carlos Tavares will run the overall company, to be named Stellantis. Shareholders of both companies will vote on the merger Jan. 4 to seal the deal creating the worldÂ’s fourth-largest automaker. The merger is expected to be completed by the end of March. PSA will get six seats on the new companyÂ’s 11-member board, which will be chaired by Elkann. The Americas, especially the U.S., are key to the new companyÂ’s success. Fiat ChryslerÂ’s Jeep and Ram brands are highly profitable, and Tavares has long wanted to sell PSA vehicles in the U.S. Manley has been the Italian-American automakerÂ’s CEO for 2 1/2 years, taking over when Sergio Marchionne died in 2018. Stellantis will have the capacity to produce 8.7 million cars a year, just behind Volkswagen, the Renault-Nissan alliance and Toyota.
