2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon sheds seats and insulation to drop weight

Tue, Jan 31 2017

You've probably already heard that the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon will be lighter than the Hellcat Challenger – to tune of more than 200 pounds. What you probably don't know is that the Dodge team did it by dropping most of the seats, along with a few other tricks. The Demon loses 113 pounds by making the front passenger seat with its seatbelt (58 pounds) and back seat (55 pounds including restraints and floor mats) optional, which accounts for a large chunk of the weight loss compared to the Hellcat. The Demon also has unique 18-by-11-inch wheels, which are 16 pounds lighter than the Hellcat's, a manual tilt/telescope steering column instead of the powered one, which loses four pounds, and an 18-pound loss thanks to removing 23 noise, vibration, and harshness parts (the Demon will not be a quiet car, to say the least). Another 20 pounds is lost removing the trunk interior trim and spare tire. Still, the Demon gains 17 pounds thanks to the wide fender flares that accommodate the massive drag radials, which also add 3.5 inches to the car's width. For reference, the lightest Hellcat weighs 4,448 pounds with a manual transmission, and the automatic-equipped car comes in at 4,455 pounds. The Demon will be revealed in April before the New York Auto Show, and Dodge will continue to tease its latest satanic muscle couple weekly until then. Ram exec: first 30-mpg pickup truck will 'win'

Fri, Aug 8 2014

It is totally possible, today, to take the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel pickup truck, load it up with gear and people, and drive it from Texas to Michigan while getting 38 miles per gallon. We know because we did it. Officially, though, the 1500 gets just 20 mpg combined. A more impressive number is the 28 mpg on the highway. Bob Hegbloom, the Ram brand director, thinks that there's a more important fuel economy target to hit: 30 mpg. Whichever truck company can manage that feat, he recently told Automotive News, "wins." It's kind of an obvious thing to say, but in the 1500 with both the EcoDiesel and the V6 Pentastar engine, Hegbloom said, "fuel economy is so important." Hegbloom didn't promise that the next EcoDiesel truck will manage to get on up over the 30 hump, but he did say that Ram is not sitting still when it comes to fuel economy. "I just want to have continuous improvement and to keep gaining every day," he said. "We sat still in the past and it doesn't lead to a great place."

Dodge Viper plant will close for good Aug. 31

Wed, Jul 12 2017

It has been a long time coming, an end rumored since at least 2015, but after 25 years, the Dodge Viper's demise is nigh. Production of the $90,000 bespoke sports car is ending. Therefore, FCA will be shutting down its Conner Assembly Plant on Aug. 31. Automotive News reports that the Detroit plant will be shutting down. The car has been hand-built there since 1995, save for a hiatus in 2010-13 (production began at FCA's Mack Plant in 1992). The Prowler was built there, too, from 1997 to 2002. More than 80 workers currently build the Viper, making Conner FCA's smallest assembly facility. But not many Vipers are sold - 630 last year - despite an enthusiastic following. And of course FCA's own 707-horsepower Dodge Challenger and Charger SRT Hellcats and new 840-horsepower Challenger SRT Demon can't help matters. But the last straw is the fact the Viper can't comply with new safety requirements going into effect. On the bright side, the UAW has seen the plant closure coming since 2015, and FCA has told the state of Michigan that it expects to find positions at other plants for the Viper crew. FCA has been celebrating the Viper valedictory for a couple of years now, offering serialized special editions, including the $121,000 Viper ACR, and touting the ability to build unique Vipers with its "1 of 1" customization program, with a choice of 16,000 unique paint colors and 48,000 unique stripe combinations.
