Dodge Viper Rt/10 1995 on 2040-cars

Perhaps the closest America has come to building a successor to the legendary Shelby Cobra, the Dodge Viper was a supercar developed by Chrysler with input from Carroll Shelby himself in the late 1980's. The aggressive shape certainly captured something of the Cobra's brutal beauty - from the side pipes to the huge 17-inch rims, the Viper definitely looked the part when it wowed the public as a concept at the 1989 Detroit Auto Show and little changed from the original prototype to the first production model of 1992. Boasting an all-alloy 8-litre V10 developed by Lamborghini (then owned by Chrysler) under the hood, with 400 bhp at 4600 rpm and 465 lbs/ft and 465 lbs/ft of torque at 3600 rpm the Viper could certainly get up and move. A 0 to 60 mph time of 4.6 seconds and top speed of 165 mph put the Dodge firmly in the big league in terms of outright performance. The Viper wasn't all brute power though, employing race care technology - the structure was a tubular space frame, with composite body panels, suspension was full independant, with coil springs and wishbones all round and the transmission was a T56 six speed manual. Other notable features included electronic direct ignition and sequential multipoint fuel injection, vented, four pot disc brakes and a limited-slip diff. Inside the Viper boasted creature comforts the Cobra driver could only dream of, including power steering, a leather steering wheel, premium stereo and air conditioning. Even the folding roof and tonneau kept the elements out and was easy to install. Always built in limited numbers the Dodge Viper is already regarded as a modern classic and look set to follow the original Cobra's exalted road to collector car status in the not too distant future. |

Small number of 2013 Chrysler 200 and Dodge Avenger models recalled
Sun, 24 Feb 2013A small number of units of the 2013 Chrysler 200 (inset) and 2013 Dodge Avenger are being recalled over a broken control valve in the fuel tank assembly. The potential 1,785 sedans were manufactured late last year, and if affected with a broken control valve could suffer from stalling or fuel leakage.
A bulletin from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that the recall should begin next month, at which time owners can take their cars to dealers for repair free of charge. The full release with more information is just below.
The Chrysler brand could be axed under Stellantis management
Sun, Jan 3 2021MILAN — While running NissanÂ’s North American operations from 2009 to 2011, Carlos Tavares had a reputation for closely watching costs with little tolerance for vehicles or ventures that didnÂ’t make money. Experts say that means Tavares, currently the head of PSA Group, is likely to follow that blueprint when he becomes leader of a merged PSA and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. The low-performing Chrysler brand might get the axe as could slow-selling cars, SUVs or trucks that lack potential. Already the companies are talking about consolidating vehicle platforms — the underpinnings and powertrains — to save billions in engineering and manufacturing costs. That could mean job losses in Italy, Germany and Michigan as PSA Peugeot technology is integrated into North American and Italian vehicles. “You canÂ’t be cost efficient if you keep the entire scale of both companies,” said Karl Brauer, executive analyst for the iSeeCars.com auto website. “WeÂ’ve seen this show before, and weÂ’re going to see it again where they economize these platforms across continents, across multiple markets.” Shareholders of both companies are to meet Monday to vote on the merger to form the worldÂ’s fourth-largest automaker, to be called Stellantis. The deal received EU regulatory approval just before Christmas. Tavares, who for years has wanted to sell PSA vehicles in the U.S., wonÂ’t take full control of the merged companies until the end of January at the earliest. He likely will target Europe for consolidation first, because thatÂ’s where Fiat vehicles overlap extensively with PSAÂ’s, said IHS Markit Principal Auto Analyst Stephanie Brinley. Europe has been a money-loser for FCA, and factories in Italy are operating way below capacity — a concern for unions, given FiatÂ’s role as the largest private sector employer in the country. “We are at a crossroads,Â’Â’ said Michele De Palma of the FIOM CGIL metalworkersÂ’ union. “Either there is a relaunch, or there is a slow agonizing closure of industry, in particular the auto industry, in Italy.” ItalyÂ’s hopes lie with the luxury Maserati and sporty Alfa Romeo brands, but De Palma said investments are needed to bring hybrid and electric technology up to speed. FiatÂ’s Italian capacity stands at 1.5 million vehicles, but only a few hundred thousand are being produced each year. Most factories were on rolling short-term layoffs due to lack of demand, even before the pandemic.
