Convertible conversion cost $14K in 1991. One of an estimated 24 made. Excellent body, paint, and custom interior. The drivetrain is bone stock. Runs strong and shifts smooth like it should with no issues. Factory chrome wheels."

Here's the holly grail for Stealth fans - 1991 RT twin turbo Dodge Stealth convertible made by the famous R.Straman Company of Costa Mesa, CA.  The convertible conversion alone cost $14K in 1991, which pushed the total cost of the car when it was new to over $45K.  This car is one of an estimated 24 turbo Stealth convertibles made by Straman.  Full power top with a matching boot cover. A red with black top Straman convertible was featured in the 8/91 issues of both Road&Track and Automobile, both magazines come with the car.  Straman added considerable structural reinforcements to the car, which are detailed in the magazine articles.  I further supplemented it with front & rear strut bars. The car is still perfectly aligned with absolutely no body sag, the doors close & latch easily with a gentle one finger push.  It is smooth as glass on the highway at 80 mph with the top down!

I'm its 3rd owner, I bought it in 2001 with 47K miles on it.  It now has 69K. The drivetrain is bone stock - right down to the air filter.  Full 60K timing belt service done 6 years ago by a certified Mitsubishi master tech.  I've always run synthetic oil, and all fluids in the trans and rear are proper synthetic GL4 and GL5.  The transfer case was replaced under factory recall about 10 years ago.  Drive line center carrier bearing replaced a few years ago.  Runs strong and shifts smooth like it should with no issues. It does not leak any fluids.  The ECS struts are all in good condition, and it can still be switched between Sport and Touring modes.  The only idiot light on is the one for low windshield washer fluid.

Custom red and black interior.  All seats are in excellent condition with no worn spots or tears.  It has the usual cracked defroster vents.  It does not have the usual bubbles in the interior door panels - both are perfect.   Some of the fabric on the inside of the windshield header and pillars is looking a little dated.  All gauges, power windows, power locks, cruise control, and climate control all function properly. Three of the 4 factory chrome wheels are near perfect, one (rear passenger side) has slight curb rash (see photo).   Michelin Pilot tires are all wearing evenly and have lots of tread left.  I just had it professionally detailed.  The detail shop repaired a large scratch over the rear driver's side wheel, and got a little overspray in a small section of that tire's tread.  They also removed most of the black crinkle paint off the engine front valve cover.  It is a 22 year old car that is driven semi-regularly, so it is not perfect.

Radio and in-dash 6 CD changer are from a newer Mits Eclipse, so the steering wheel audio controls do not work.  Kenwood amp mounted behind one of the rear seats cranks up the Infinity speakers nicely.

Car is solid and mechanically sound to drive anywhere.  I drive it to Seattle once a year (200 mile round trip on I-5) without any problems.

Junkyard Gem: This 1987 Dodge 600 SE Sedan is suspiciously Benz-ish

Wed, Feb 28 2018

The K Platform, introduced for the 1981 model year, saved Chrysler from certain bankruptcy. By 1983, a stretched-out K chassis had been developed; the Chrysler version was the E-Class, while Dodge had the 600. These cars have become all but extinct now, so this '87 600 sedan in a Denver-area wrecking yard is a noteworthy Junkyard Gem. Ford explicitly compared the appearance of the late-1970s Granada to that of the Mercedes-Benz W123 in their advertising, and so the ground was broken for Chrysler to make the allusions to Stuttgart machinery even more obvious a few years later. The name of the Chrysler E-Class was about as subtle as a tire iron blow to the kidneys, and the badging on its Dodge 600 sibling left little to the imagination. 600s came from the factory with several variations of the Chrysler 2.2/2.5 engine, as well as the Mitsubishi "Hemi 2.6" four-cylinder. This car has the 2.5 Chrysler engine, rated at 97 horsepower. Base price was $10,553, about $23,500 in 2017 dollars (the cheapest new Mercedes-Benz E-Class cost $38,600 in 1987, so there wasn't much customer overlap between the two cars). The 600s weren't bad cars for the price, though the build quality wasn't quite up to Mercedes-Benz standards. You'll find this thumbtack treatment on most K-Car headliners that still drive today. The interior is all tan and brown, with plenty of tough industro-velour upholstery and not-so-convincing artificial wood. Aluminum-faced home audio equipment was all the rage during the 1980s, and the trend spread to automotive controls. No cassette in this car, but at least it had AM and FM radio (even plain old mono AM radios were still expensive options on many cars as late as 1987, so the standard AM/FM stereo rig in the 600 was an attractive deal). Dodge Viper returning to Le Mans this year?

Mon, Jan 5 2015

If you were among the fans disappointed by Chrysler's recent decision to end the Dodge Viper's racing program, we may have some good news for you, as the racing outfit behind the campaign is reportedly working to bring the American supercars back to Le Mans this year. That racing outfit is Riley Technologies, a constructor perhaps best known for its Daytona Prototypes, but it has also prepared its share of GT racers, too. Chrysler charged Riley with leading its racing program for the new Viper GTS-R, campaigned it in the United SportsCar Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Auburn Hills made the unfortunate decision back in March to pull its Vipers out of Le Mans, and then in October to withdraw from the US series, as well, thereby effectively ending the program altogether. Disappointed though it surely was, Riley remains defiant. The North Carolina-based company is planning on taking the existing Vipers back to Le Mans on its own, with or without factory support. The Viper has, after all, proven a capable machine, having taken both the drivers' and teams' titles in the United SportsCar Championship this past season. "With Le Mans, every driver and every manufacturer needs to have their first trip there, and it isn't always what you want it to be, but we did show reliability and did have some pace," Bill Riley told Racer.com. "Since then, we've worked hard on the cars, they're now strong, front-running cars in the US, and we're working with the ACO on the BoP to make sure the cars are strong at Le Mans. They're super-reliable and fast, and we'd expect to be right in the mix with the other cars." Riley has kept the existing support staff in place, and once it secures its driver lineup and sponsors, chances look good that it could represent America well at Le Mans this year in either the GTE Pro or GTE Am class. Its predecessor did, after all, complete a three-year winning streak that saw it dominate the GTS class right up until its withdrawal in 2000. 121k Dodge Darts being investigated over braking problem

Mon, Jun 22 2015

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating the Dodge Dart due to reports of braking problems. Some 121,000 cars are possibly affected, all from the 2013 model year. According to The Detroit News, NHTSA received 18 complaints about the brake pedal becoming hard to depress on these cars, increasing stopping distance. Drivers reported hearing a "pop noise or an air hissing noise when applying the brake pedal, followed by a hard pedal feel and reduced brake effectiveness," NHTSA told the News. In a particularly terrifying incident, one driver says the Dart's braking system shut down while driving at 50 miles per hour. "I feared for my life. It is one of the scariest things I have ever dealt with," the complaint said, according to The Detroit News. A Fiat-Chrysler spokesperson said the automaker is "fully cooperating" with this investigation.
