Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat in the works

Fri, 25 Jul 2014

In Autoblog's recent First Drive of the 2015 Challenger SRT with the 707-horsepower Hellcat V8 we found its engine to be as brutally powerful as the numbers would suggest, even if it wasn't the best handler. However, the muscle-car-styling just isn't right for some buyers that need four doors and proper rear seats to haul around the family. It appears that Dodge has their backs, though, because the Hellcat is very likely on its way into the Charger in the near future. Imagine the looks on your passengers' faces when you stomp down on the throttle.
According to Road and Track, when Dodge submitted the Hellcat for engine power certification to the Society of Automotive Engineers, the company included the Charger on the paperwork. That showed that the automaker wanted the engine checked out for the sedan, too. R&T reckons the 707-hp Charger would hit the road about a year from now, clearing the Challenger for a year of exclusivity with the powerplant.
When the Charger SRT Hellcat does hit the road, it may carry a very special accolade. Assuming nothing beats it in the meantime, it might be the world's highest horsepower production sedan. Think on that for a second. Even a Mercedes S65 AMG only has 621 horsepower, though a good bit more torque at 738 pound-feet to the Dodge's 650 lb-ft. So while the beastly engine is getting put into other models, where else would you like to see it? The Ram? Grand Cherokee? Let us know in Comments.

Some dealers asking $100,000-plus for Daytona-edition Dodge Charger SRT Hellcats

Mon, Dec 30 2019

If you thought the name of the 2020 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody Daytona 50th Anniversary Edition was a lot to swallow, then you're definitely going to choke on what some dealers are asking for the privilege of owning one. The $4,495 package is commanding as much as $25,000 in "market adjustments" from stores looking to capitalize on the rarity of this extremely limited-edition model.  The folks over at Moparinsiders.com reported Friday that some dealers are asking Demon-level prices for their limited allocations of the commemorative package. Their assessment? Not worth it. We're inclined to agree.  The Daytona 50th Anniversary Edition package is, fundamentally at least, little more than a set of stickers, a dash plaque and a tiny bump in horsepower. What you really get for your money is exclusivity. Only 501 were built (to commemorate the number of production units required to homologate the original Charger Daytona for NASCAR racing); just 451 went to U.S. dealers. The other 50 were reserved for Canada.  To be fair, no variant of the 2020 Charger SRT Hellcat Widebody even approaches the definition of "inexpensive." Just to get behind the wheel of the newest edition to the Charger lineup will set you back at least $71,000. The Widebody package is more than just a set of custom fenders. The Hellcat also gets another 1.6 inches of track width and some extra rubber on the road. SRT engineers also increased the Hellcat’s front spring rate by 32% and beefed up its sway bars (from 19 mm to 21.7 mm in the front and from 32 mm to 34 mm in the rear). The adaptive suspension was firmed up a little bit across the board too for crisper response over road imperfections. Plus, you know, there's that 707-horsepower, supercharged, 6.2-liter engine. The Daytona gets an extra 10 ponies, right? Well, sort of, anyway. SRT rated its output at a slightly higher engine speed. Between us, it's the same thing.  So, there's a silver lining: You don't have to spend $100,000 for a 2020 Charger Widebody Hellcat if you don't want to, but somebody probably will.  Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. Junkyard Gem: 2001 Dodge Stratus R/T Coupe

Fri, Jan 19 2018

The Chrysler "Cloud Cars" of the 1990s were the Chrysler Cirrus, Plymouth Breeze, and Dodge Stratus; by the turn of our current century, only the Stratus name remained standing. For 2001, the Stratus sedan remained on a Chrysler platform, while the unrelated-other-than-name Stratus coupe became a sibling to the Mitsubishi Eclipse. The Stratus R/T was the hot-rod version; here's a 2001 Stratus R/T coupe languishing in a California self-service wrecking yard. This car has the 5-speed manual transmission, which was becoming a rarity even for performance-minded American car shoppers by the early 21st century. The engine is a DOHC version of the Mitsubishi 6G72, a V6 engine that went into dozens of different vehicles from the mid-1980s through just a few years ago. The Mitsubishi Debonair AMG ran the 6G72, as did the early Hyundai Sonata as well as the Proton Perdana. This one was rated at 200 horsepower, which was enough to be real fun with a manual transmission. This car endured some exciting driving from its last owner, looks like. The Stratus Coupe was built through the 2005 model year, after which its Dodge Avenger successor continued in sedan-only form. This content is hosted by a third party.
